Hmm, this is smelling like a "wait for a patch" situation - sadly, I don't see any new patches listed right now.

A couple of people have told me they've parked a spotter near where Dartain the Lost should be spawning. They've checked for him on a regular basis, including after a server crash, when the Hole was at full pop (meaning all the named and all the trash mobs were up). Dartain was not in the zone.

Unless he's some sort of timed spawn (like dragons, who spawn several hours after a server reset and don't respawn for several days at a time -- and I doubt Dartain qualifies as a dragon), I think we can reasonably label Dartain as broken.

Anywho. Quest write-up updated to here ...

More speculation about dartin

Over the last three days I have been pouring over forums, web pages, and slowly creeping around in the depths of the hole often times foiling my foes by the trickery of feigned death. Alas, I have yet to discover him. I would like to summarize some discoveries and state some things I beleive to be fact.

- I beleive Dartin does exist within the hole. I have seen at least 2 reports of GMs confirming existence and that the tome in a loot table. Also, the fact that the quest includes the tome supports his existance.

- I beleive Dartin no longer spawns in his old spot. I have visited this spot many times and he has never been there. Many others have also reported that he has not been there. To further evidence this, most of these named undead spawns that used to be in the tower have been relocated. I would assume this was done with our freind Dartin.

- It has been reported here that many new mobs in the hole are "untrackable". I am going to go out on a limb here and say that "dartin the lost" was always intended as a hidden type of mob and thus he would also have been tagged untrackable in the revamp.

- Given the fact that he is called Dartin the lost, and given the fact that previously he was carefully concealed behind a locked rock, I assume that he has once again been placed in a hidden location. It is my belief he is behind rocks, some other object, or perhaps behind some hidden passage SOMEWHERE in the hole.

- I dont beleive Dartin has a placeholder, as he did not before and the other similarly named mobs in the hole do not. They are simply on long respawns.

Personally, I have done extensive explorations of the hole starting at the bottom of the hole using a leap of faith + invulnerabilty and extending to the first parts of the city closest to the tunnel leading to the undead tower. I have also explored the undead tower and the basement. I have relocated alot of the named but dartin still eludes me. I did make one interesting discovery behind a false wall. It led to a locked door of which i was able to breach with sight alone using a stalking probe. Behind it was The protector of the runes who conned red and was weilding a very interesting looking particle staff, there were also some tubular things around him that seemed to be portals of some kind. When I sent my eye of zomm into a portal the eye of zomm poofed. I tried to attack him by sending a pet and casting through the door. Appearantly, he is unattackable. So, I assume he is some sort of quest mob.

I will continue to explore the hole as time allows, and report any new findings.

----Quick question. The only other tome I lack is sanguine tome. I know the bloodfiend spawns in the southern area of the maze. But, Does the bloodfiend spawn in the room with the little temple with the mini cazic thule on top? or in one of those circular rooms nearby? or where?

There are 2 small rooms in the southern part of the maze.

U want to camp the 3 spawn room with the firepots in it (not the one with the mini temple). Middle mob in the room is the ph.

Next time I'm in the Hole, I'll have to check in the seemingly pointless tunnel behind the Guardian of the Seal. Last time I went through the door was a month or so prior to the quest going live.

I did make one interesting discovery behind a false wall. It led to a locked door of which i was able to breach with sight alone using a stalking probe. Where was the false wall you refer to? Can you provide a description of the area, or if possible a loc?

Whats great about the hole (and what makes it a fun zone to crawl) is that there are plenty of little hidden areas, rooms, basements, etc etc to go through. I did an extensive clearing of the first half of the zone (before the long tunnel that leads to the old Yael area) and did not see Dart.

Since I am too lazy to read though this huge thread, are there any melee rewards for doing this? Or is it another caster only quest?

I just kept the spawn designated "H" cleared, pacifying the 2 others in the room each time it spawned. The Tae Ew Bloodfiend was actually quite a bit easier than a Disciple (cleric) PH I had to clear a few times. If you solo this, I suggest pulling the PH/Bloodfiend quite far back from the spawn room. The lizards have a fairly large social-aggro radius.

the rewards are for hybrids and necros i think. not sure what wizard get on the tradeskill part. casters do get the grand oracle stuff but that isn't a tradeskill its a trade in

Don't have a loc right now, but it is in furthest part of the courtyard as you emerge from the tunnel leading down to the undead tower. there were two undead spawns against a wall with columns. As i recall the false wall was behind the guy on the right.
