What I would do is check the bazaar for spells (Malo) and see which ones are very expensive (Torpor). Once you do that, print off the list of spells (Torpor) and the research words that are used to make them (Malo). It should be obvious which ones are pretty rare (Malo) and what the rare component is for them (Torpor). You can even sell the common words/runes/other for the rare spells (Torpor) for a fair profit unless they are very common drop. Myself, I'm running 90 different post 50 research components banked and still can't make some spells (Torpor) that I need to scribe (Malo).

Hark! Who is that, prowling along the fields! It is Draggar De'VIr, hands clutching two hardened pitas! He cries gutterally: "In the name of Thor the Mighty, I hereby void your warranty, and send you back to God!!!"

Even though my cleric has been retired for 3 months and I gave up the game, I was still curious how much pp I made in mining, so
my partner wrote a parser for me.
For my cleric over 1.2 milllion pp and about 700kpp from my bazaar mule.
Bare in mind I rarely exp'ed ( stayed 56 for 6 months up until I retired) and nothing I sold was from items dropped from mobs I/the group killed.
A lot of pp was dumped into my tradeskills if you are curious where that much went, plus pp to my partners character.
It's a shame they (Sony) killed off the 10 hidden slots

I was looking for the thread about it being broken and didn't find it. Maybe I should have looked in rants... I'll try there next
I bugged this the first day after LDoN came out. Then a couple days ago I sent /feedback that I'd really like that fixed.
I'm hoping if enough of us /feedback that it was a fun part of the game for us that they will put it back. I used to actually look forward to patch day for merchant mining. I'll really miss it if it is gone.
I used to pull good sized profits from merchant mining, but seems that since the birth of this very thread, merchant mining has become VERY popular.
Now, I actualy have to go out and kill things to make money.

I found 3 stacks of anaconda meat and 3 stacks of griffon meat at a vendor one time. I bought them all up, for about 10pp total, and sold them in the bazaar for 50pp each. Total profit was 6K.
Research components ARE dropping like candy in the new dungeons.
They must be. In the past 24 hours, I have found 5 dew clovers on the same set of vendors...which shall go unidentified until I get all the clovers I need.
I don't know if this would qualify as my best find since LDoN went live, but I also landed Words of Apparition off a vendor in EC. Now, if I could just find a supply of Yaeth's Pg. 73 (Right), I wouldn't have to worry about saving up way too many points for Remove Greater Curse.
I'm thankful for the increase in drop rates. Prior to LDoN, I thought drops were far too rare.
I am also upset that they got rid of the backstock on vendors, but I've adapted. I've taken to clearing out the cheap newbie junk from vendors that are near adventure exits and deleting it and checking those vendors from time to time to see if the stock is full and if anything good has managed to fill the slots I emptied. (This method was the way I landed my fifth dew clover this evening.) It still doesn't seem as good or entertaining ol' vendor diving, but it's the best alternative I can think of for the time being.
Thats not a bad idea Aldane. You might want to consider lugging a bunch of those cheap items to a further-off vendor - one that you designate as your 'dump' vendor - so that you don't lose ALL the money spent in buying it up. Maybe (since it seems like you are a caster) if you get a 'port or some such - you could Really take it away. Xloc to a bind spot next to your dump merchant might help too.
But I must say - for whatever reason - I did not think of that myself.
Another thing that I thought of - that could be used in conjunction - would be to leave yourself 'browsing' your favorite vendor during peak times. This would do 2 things. One - give you first crack at a recently-sold items to that vendor - and two - allow you to buy more junk if the vendor is filling up - possibly Before it actually fills up.
I can see it now - vendors across Norrath - all with their 'mining shadows' standing around them!
"Aye - now I have ta' spend me time hangin' around Mr. merchant-bags here to make sure he does not get stupid and throw away something truly valuable!"
