  • I scream, you scream, we all scream about Shadowscream!

OK, this isn't really a primal scream per se, but I am frustrating about shrieking substance.

I have some stacks of wailing substance, thanks to the Paludal owlbear camp, and I know where to camp shades for swirling shadows when the time comes. However, I'm having real problems getting shrieking substance.

I should mention that I am a level 52 shadowknight and don't have problems doing general farming -- but I am not the greatest soloer in the world. I've gotten enough to drag myself up from 188 to 190 but this is getting ridiculous.

I have been getting some shrieking substance, very slowly, by farming sonic wolves in Hollowshade. The only time I have been successful is when the Hollowshade war favors the wolves, hunting around the northern caves, and they only seem to drop off the wolflings.

Where DO these suckers drop? Any other suggestions where I can farm for shrieking substance, including what I should be concentrating my efforts on?

Don't bother hunting Sonic wolves outside of the South camp... so, you have to help the war along to favor the wolves (when they attack, you help the wolves kill the defenders of the Southern Village). When the Wolves are up on the Southern islands, hunt the wolves on those islands to gather Shrieking substance.

Your best bet for substances is the southern islands. Whoever owns that land will drop 1 in 5 kills approximately. Wailers from owlbears and Shriekers from sonic wolves.
If you need shrieking substances and the owlbears own the islands I find that hunting sonic dire wolves in TM at the entrance to Katta is the next best thing. Drop rate is about 1 in 6-7 kills. Personally I wont do PC owlbears. The spawn time is to long and the camps are usually taken. I just wait for a server re-set.
Oh and if the grimlings own the islands, the chieftain and bodyguards drop a decent amount of acrylia. I kill them repeatedly while waiting for the east/west to attack the south. And contrary to reports this does not trigger an attack. Who attacks whom is strictly random.

I posted this someplace else... this may or may not be helpful to you... at the very least, it shows one method to press on.

Folks on my server REPEATEDLY help the Grimlings win the war in Hollowshade. My begging, pleading, bribes, and threats mean nothing, since (unconfirmed) a named Grimling occasionally drops a NODROP Haste belt. (NODROP = gold mine on PvP server)

For Shrieking Substance, I just head to Tenebrous Mtns and hunt Dire Sonic Wolves there. Drops are about 1 in 4 on about a level 36 mob. (Pers-Reward reports about 1 in 6... I have only hunted here 3-4 hours total, maybe his numbers are based on a larger sampling?)

For Wailing Substance, I now camp the group of 4 Grimy Owlbears in Paludal Caverns. Pers-Reward refuses to do this with good reason. Drops are about 1 in 4 on these as well, but mob is much lower level (20-ish?) on a 5-7 minute spawn. When they've been cleared out, I just camp my substance farmer and log on another character to gather Swirling Shadows for a few minutes.

          I HATE this zone !!!

And since LoY Patching is hitting the servers you can't farm...

          A) Buggen and no GM
          B) Wrong Mobs in Camp and your race is dead.
          C) Serverdown and you are where you was.

Since 2 Weeks i could not farm.....the zones is usualy broken in less then one day.

Where shall i skillup now? I have 10 stacks of shrinking and i need some wailing. Cool i can farm 4 mobs in Paludal..great Idea.

            Tenebrous Mountains

Great shrieking and windstone place and if you can catch a druid quading just ask them if you can loot the shrieking. I never have anyone say no.

              Alternate Hunting Ground

I have been beating Dire Sonic Wolves down in Tenebrous Mountains, sitting at the entrance to Katta Castellum. In about an hour of hunting them I had 4 shrieking substances drop for me. I actually still get decent experience for the wolves, so it has been a good situation for me. For many of you these are probably green to you. The nice thing about the Dire Sonic Wolves, is that they are snareable and rootable. Something I noticed that the Sonic Wolves in Grimling Forest are not affected by. Good hunting to you.

                  Shrieking Substance in TM

Have hunted 200 shrieking substance in tenebrous mountains.
My experience is that the drop rate goes down the further you are from the grimling runner spawn point by the grimling forest tunnel. I camped the point where everything runs to when feared for ages and go very few drops. Camping by GF I got my second hundred in a day or so.

Mind you I have NEVER had a skill up from making shadowscream armour. Lots from humming orbs up to 168, but nothing since. I am however thinking of opening a shoe shop with the 60 plus pairs of shadowscream boots I still haven't managed to sell yet.

                    Thanks for the tips

The owlbears control Hollowshade on my server today, and last night, in about an hour and a half total of constant farming*, I came away with about 60 wailing substances. I found the "sweet spot" in the southern islands and killed as many owlbears as I could lay my hands on. I also came away with 8 perfect owlbear pelts, which is a nice bonus.

                    * I do not count the first half hour, for reasons I will state in a moment.

I'll keep farming the bears til the wolves appear, and then I'll start in on them.

                    Here are a few observations:

                    1. I started in the Grimling chieftain's camp in the southernmost part of the zone. Although the names of the bears in that camp were the same as those on the southern islands (namely bonegrinders and razorclaws) I did not get a single shrieking substance drop from the owlbears in this region during the half hour I spent there.

                    2. I moved to the southern islands right across from the water from the grimling chieftain's camp and started reaping immediate success.

                    3. My best drop rates were from bonegrinders and razorclaws, gatherers next, and only three drops from ravagers. I never got a single drop off the lookouts. I just kept killing constantly to keep the spawn going.

                    4. This camp is MUCH better and MUCH faster than the Paludal grimy owlbears camp.

For kicks and giggles, next time I hunt I am going to try to keep track of number of different types killed and how many wailing substances each dropped (and do the same thing with the wolves when the wolves control the zone). Since I am also level 190 in smithing, I am also going to start keeping careful track of combines and successes, something I wish I had done from day 1.

From what I can see, on Innoruuk at least, not many people flip the Hollowshade war around. A particular spawn can control the zone for days. Time to fill up my bank account with wailing substance...

BTW I got a shrieking substance from a Sonic Wolf at it's own camp the other day, and the Grimlings were in charge of the South camp at the time.

The dire sonic wolves in TM and the Dire Sonic Guardians in Katta both can drop shreiking substances. At 52 some TM wolves will be light blue, and every single pop of the Dire Sonic Guardians will be dark blue. Yay for XP while farming!

you *could do the quest trn in to Master Barkhem. He used to profess that there was more he could teach you at a later date, would be funny to see something added here that when unnoticed because noone has checked him in ages.

i would love to keep track of which kinds drop substance more than others but thats entirely too much work hehe..now if it told you "you have looted a substance from this" in the log it wouldnt be bad.

easiest way i found was bring friends and a really fast puller and run around as much as possible and bring back 30-40 to the ae party..then loot away

It seems something is wrong here. Are you maxed out in str or wis or int ? This is very, very important.

I usually get 1 or 2 skillups per stack. I'm at 209 smithing now. I started scream boots when I hit 188 smithing. Worst luck has been 40 combines and no skillup.

I have a set of smithing gear which is basically cheap str gear, crusty and validus custodus armor, a cracked darkwood shield, and various str jewelry. I also bought a geerlock device 5% smithing skill. I get sham buffs and KEI before I do my combines. This maxes out my str and pumps up my int and wis.
