Well, I was my own AOE crew last night. Had a 1/2 hour to spare so I went to twon on the wolves that owned the islands. They dropped almost a full stack for me, which was cool. They also would beat the heck out of me while I tried channeling Upheavel . Thankfully I had a KEI, so it went fairly quickly. I've come to the conclusion that while I can farm them alone, it is slow and painful compared to the carnage I could inflict with a puller.

This is in respsonse to the 61 Enchanter with Dire Charm who wonders how easy it will be to solo Dire Sonic Wolves in Tenebrous. It should be cinchy! My Paladin could solo (carefully) them at 45. If I were a DC Enchanter I would charm one of the tougher coterie vampires and have him roam around killing the wolves. Any DPS you add would be gravy.

I found it fairly easy as a 44-46 Enchanter (very much without DC ) to solo Dire Sonic Wolves in Tenebrous, so it should be extremely easy with DC at 61. However, the Coterie are immune to charm (or so I've been told -- never tried personally), so you wouldn't be able to DC them. I'd probably DC one of the Katta guards if it came down to it.

You won't match the drop rate of substances you'd get on the Hollowshade south islands, but for those times when the wolves don't have control there it's something, at least.

          as a lvl 65 cleric :
. i always have AoZ, Virtue and BoR (fast cast) up. i try to have kei but it isn't necessary
. i aoe with "the silent command" and "the unspoken world" (1 sec cast, easily channelable, also stun/blind the mob) and "catastrophe"

the tip is to separate the pull in 2 : one with the 2 close small island and a camp of the big one, the other with the remaining mobs. when you finish to loot a pull, the other one should repop.

          to ae, 2 solution :
. you duo with a melee : he aggro, pull near you, you begin with "catastrophe" and finish with a fast ae (silent command or unspoken world). with a big tank, you can even pull all the islands in one time.
. you solo : to avoid interrupt (mobs push you while casting), run into a little house, go in a corner (you will not move when hit), face the mob (to decrease the number of stun) and try to channel a fast ae. if your hp going low (like 1 buble), channel a remedy. after the fast ae, lots of mobs should be dead or stun, so you should be able to channel catastrophe easily

it's very exciting, a little dangerous, but really fun

I'm back to the Paludal entrance in Shadeweavers; without any kind of AOE attack and with being only a melee, it's hard to hunt those ****ed swirling shadows anywhere else.

That said, I'm very frustrated with the drop rate. I was there an hour today and only got 4.

For those of you with a good group you can lure to ME - the Xi Vius et al do indeed drop swirling shadows in good numbers (they look exactly like the shadows on the TS island). The place to go for them is inside the Xin Thall centien fort straight out from the DSP zoneline. We took a couple of groups there for a fun 'mini raid' and aswell as reasonable xp we collected shadows, akheva blood and three of these :-

Which should lure one or two guildies out for a hunt.

With 254-Str and 254-Wisdom, Smithing at 189, I have 62 final combines with the Shadow Scream Gorget over 4 different smithing sessions with zero skill ups. Is this common or just a bad stretch? Am I in the so called "Hell levels" or just another victim of the RNG?

One other question, I do not currently use a Geerlok, and would be giving up +20 wisdom to use one in primary hand, is changing to a Geerlok something I should think about?

Sounds like bad luck with the RNG

Would it be possible for you to pick up that 20 Wis cheaply elsewhere? With a KEI or switching to a Velium Ruby Veil and a few other higher Wis items while you smith? I keep a small kit of high Wis gear that I switch out my higher-mana hunting gear with. If I can squeeze out 2 more Wis my days of needing a KEI to smith will be over

                    Prince killed

Just watched this few days ago -

                    - all camps are taken by owlbears;
                    - named owlbear "Prince XXX" spotted somewhere mid zone, i come and watch him get killed;
                    - nothing happens - i keep farming substances for another few hours, then leave...

so even at this point, it's either bugged, or simple killing is not what you need to do for reset.

The boss you need to kill to reset the zone will appear inside the fort where the Vah Shir normally are. The Zone has been buggy since release and the MoBs just don't respawn in the fort ever.

The named you saw was most likely Prince Skriatat. He dies pretty regularly for a range item he drops with +4% to meditate. He may cause the war to cycle but it's never been confirmed and can't be proven one way or the other until the zone is actually "working as intended"

Don't hold your breath, if it's been this long it aint gonna be fixed :x

Is it possible to AE the owlbears/sonic wolves in Hollowshade with a bard?

I don't know much about bards, but I have had an offer from a 60 bard to help me skill up to 242 in return for some cultural armour.

I do know that the owlbears start to run at about 40% hp, so I wonder if a bard AE will be work?

Yes, I have seen bards wiping out the islands.

Just PLEASE have some consideration for other smiths who may be farming there. I had a rude Level 61 bard who was mowing those islands, and when I asked if she could please leave one small section available to me to farm, just one end of an island with three houses, she told me that if I could outkill her I was welcome to try. Then she came over and mowed the area I asked her to leave alone flat.

As a shadowknight, I can't keep up with that.

I didn't think asking to leave one small area of the island alone was too much to ask.

Matter of perspective I guess. What you have essentially asked the bard is this:

"Please stay longer in this zone that suffers from severe retardation to get what you want."

Since you are farming some substances, they are not getting them, therefore it will take longer for them to get however many substances they are collecting (assuming, of course, they are clearing the zone).

Personally speaking - not that I'm implying you are doing this - but I've been griefed enough by people that "just want to share" that my instinctive response is to tell them to get lost.

I haven't done this farm but I'd rather go do something else if someone was at a farm first and then come back later. I can spend 6 hours getting X amount or I can spend 12 if I share the spwan. I might as well do something else for that 6 hours.
The key word here is first though.

Personally I've spent 4 hours trying to farm these guys and then had some uber Shammy wander in and start to obliterate all of them. When I asked him to leave some for me to kill he just ignored me and carried on.

As far as I'm concerned that's just kill stealing in another guise and is completely against the PNP.

Yes it will take longer to get stuff if you have to share a spawn, but if someone is already there then crowding them out just cos your character is better at farming is downright ill-mannered.
