Is there more to than just killing Vallon Zek for the proper flag? I've killed him but not sure if there's more I need to do.

    Thanks!

There's more you have to do. I have Pack of Notes from Vallon Zek, and get a no-go on the quest. Probably need to have the Divine Cypher as well.

      • just a thought and a question or 2

How doable would it be to start the earring at 212 and do the first BP combine repeatedly to raise smithing another 15 points?

Is the BP you recieve at the beggining Lore?

Farming 3 celestial essances "love the bazaar" is a heck of alot easier than farming shadow scream parts.

I havent begun the earing quest yet since smithing is my low tradeskill and im workin it up. im just looking for a little less time consuming way of raising it since im in a raid guild and time is a premium for me

I believe he won't give you the BP until you have 220 unmodified skill, so you'd have to wait till then to start. The BP is lore, but you can just destroy it and ask for another one each time

          • Salash is correct, the BP is lore and you can't get it til your skill window says your Blacksmithing is 220.

            • wait a sec i thought ya could use the modifying hammer and begin at 210. "giving you a modified 220 skill before you hail"

              so thats not correct?

              • The quest has gone back and forth on skill mods. Originally it ignored all skill mods. At some point it got changed and worked with modified skill. I personally did brewing with a raw skill of 210 during that time with a geerloc. Rescently tho they changed it back to working with unmodified skills. If memory serves it was the same patch that they changed the one earring to no stats since it had accidentally been dropping some where.

Given that it started with unmodified skills and with 15% skill mod items it's possible to get over 220 skill modified with out spending the aa's for new taanan's i'd expect it to stay with unmodified skill since they seem to want you to have to spend those aa points.

In this particular case your a day late and a dollar short. The bps are now lore and you need 220 skill unmodified. There was a time how ever when you could get away with 220 modified and the bps where not lore so you could ask him for a dozen or 2 of them, go do a bunch of combines and then just destroy the bps and go back for more. Alas it was a easy and cheap skill up method so it got nurfed.

You probably need the mobs that make up part of the Cypher (i.e. Mithaniel Marr, Agnarr, etc) so that you can understand the pack of notes.

                      • Did the combines for this quest the other night, didn't fail one the whole way. Was at 250 to all but smithing at the time. Smithing was 235+geer.

                          Smithing - 1/1 for everything @ 220+15%; 1/3 on tempering the BP @ 250; 1/1 on adding the gems @ 250
                          Brewing - 2/2 @ 250 (/yawn)
                          JC - 2/2 @ 250 (kos too)
Pottery - 1/1 @250 (not a big deal if you fail the container step)
                          Tailoring - 1/1 @ 250 (thank God!)
                          Fletching - 1/1 @ 250

                            • Is it viable to do these combines at the minimum skill necessary? (220)

some tradeskills look incredibly daunting (smithing in particular) to attempt to skill up to 250 in the hope of an increased chance of a successful combine.

also has anyone produced an item check list for the quest yet?

                              thx for info in advance

                              • in my opinion, you are abolsutely crazy if you attempt the last three steps at less than 240... that would be tailoring, fletching, and baking... the smithing is cheap per attempt.. much cheaper than actually skilling up to 240 for sure... the brewing step is a joke in cost... could easily be done at 220... jewelcraft could be done at 220, but the cost in time and money to get to 240 might be worth it... the sacred urn for pottery can be made easily at 220 and if you fail, it is not a big deal... the sacred water combine in unfailable... now to explain my earlier statement... tailoring is horrible... read peoples posts above... i have failed it multiple times at greater than 240 skill + geerlok... some people have failed it over 10 times... farm the sap for your first attempt, and then imagine doing it 10 more times, and you will skill up to 240... fletching is failable also at 240, and the wind metal and featherwood bow staff are not easy to obtain... baking, the bucket of reruga crabs are hard to get also, and u want some leftover to keep as stat food, and it is relatively easy to get baking to 240, so i suggest that also
