  • Rawckett's Tinkering Skillup Blog

Greetings fellow tinkers and tradeskillers. My name is Rawckett Launcher, and I am 66 Gnome Wizard on the Bristlebane Server. I am creating this blog so that I can share with you my plight to become a 300 Expert Tinker.

Now, I have actually stolen this blog idea from reading KyrosKrane's Skillup Blog which chronicled his quest to go from 250 – 300 and become an expert in all 7 of the tradeskills. This blog will just be contained to the tinkering trade skill.

I currently stand at a skill level of 214, having made 2 skill-ups doing 25 Durable Cutting Blade combines (all successfully ) just the other day. I do the majority of my combines in guild hall. I always do my combines with KEI or better, so my INT is always maxxed at 285 during combines.

Here is my planned skill-up path:
    · Collapsed Spit (222): coiled spring, gnomish bolts, metal rod(3), skewers

    · Collapsed Toolbox (227): circle hook, coiled spring, container base mold, container lid mold, dry hook, gnomish bolts, metal bits

    · Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236): contraption parts, gears, gnomish bolts, sprockets, waterlogged rigging

    · Anizok's Bait Dispenser (242): base prototype, clockwork gnome gear(2), gnomish bolts, metal twine, perpetual air pump, planing tool

    · Anizok's Gauze Press (262): bandages, base prototype, gnomish bolts, mana battery - class six, static orb

    · Molten Metal Bow Cam (282): jar of clockwork grease, molten metal bolts, molten metal gears

    · Crab Cacker (288): firewater, knuckle joint, metal rod(2)

    · Wok (302): clockwork carapace, firewater, gnomish bolts, grease, metal rod

    · 1/2 Vanishing Device (302): diamond, gnomish bolts, haze panther eye, mana battery - class five, reflective shard, small lantern, steel wire

    · Full Vanishing Device (302): diamond, gnomish bolts, haze panther eye, infused dark matter(2), reflective shard, small lantern, steel wire
I will have some Clockwork Armor combines mixed in there, and I am sure a few other combines, but I figured most of these (up until the Crab Cracker) are easy enough to accumulate. So I will start this rush to 300 sometime this weekend.

If anybody has any thoughts or ideas, please feel free to post them

Look into doing the Master's Servolinked armor. You need to get to 180 or so smithing to make the metal, but that is really easy. It only has one dropped part (yttrium ore). The downside is there is pretty much no market for this. The upside is master's level combines get a +5% to skill up chance. From 270 to 300 your base chance of skill up will drop from 5% to 2.5%. But if you are doing these combines, your base chance will go from 10% to 7.5%. It's alot fewer combines.

only problem I see with the skilling up with the collapsed items is they are LORE, all others on your list are not.

I fail to see how that is a problem.

So your destroy button gets some use... it needs the exercise.

Since my Smithing is between 20 - 30 ATM, and due to a lack of time to farm the Yttrium Ore and do the quest to get the Master's molds, this path isn't a real effecient way for me at the time. With the master's armor's trival at 248, I feel I may be able to get there more quickly with Bait Dispenser (depedning on drop rate of Clockwork Gnome Gear) and Gauze Press (may be expensive run). However, we will have to see as we go.

Should be too much of a problem. I will just litter them on the floor of the guild hall for my guildies to do with as they please

Hope you have TONS of stuff stockpiled for skillups...

Drop rate of clockwork gnome gears isn't going to be any less time consuming than farming Yttrium. Remember, even the Guaze Press still requires several PoI drops.

Goot point. The Base Prototype requires the Steel Ball Bearings which have not been dropping very much lately for me. Hmm, will definately reconsider that part.

              Thanks for all the input.

Well, my smithing was (1) until last week. Now its sitting at 183, and trust me, it was MUCH easer to get 182 smithing skill ups than 10 tinkering skill ups.
Also, to make the armor you only have to do the low level newbie quest (2 drops from crushbone, 2 drops from unrest). It is the symbols (that you can't tinker anyway) that require the harder tasks.
Also, you are probably better off making woks as you get carapaces, they don't stack so they will take up a ton of bank space.

As far as the lower trivial stuff I recommend making all 4 of the LoY geerloks
                Alchemy set (222)
                Pestle (227)
                Quill (232)
                Contraption (236)
All 4 of the dropped parts come from Gunthak beach, so if you are farming 1, you might as well farm (and vendor dive) all 4.

Doh! I have to kill in Crushbone. That will just ruin my Neriak faction. Oh well, guess I don't need to go there anymore anyway.

                  Thanks for the info.

PoI drops and Gunthak drops are pretty rare-ish in baz or on merchants on Maelin, so skilling has become somewhat painful. I have managed to collect about a stalk and a half of coiled springs in the last few months that I've refused to use at this point. Yttrium is also kind of rare-ish, or I'd be happily making Masters armor. I'll buy all the drops I can, but either they aren't dropping, or people are beating me to them

Footwarming Boots will take you to 235, but you need to be able to smith the boots(or know a smith). These are almost entirely vendor bought.

                      The following are not viable:
                      · Crab Cacker (288)
                      · Wok (302)
                      · 1/2 Vanishing Device (302)
                      · Full Vanishing Device (302)

The components to make these are so extremely rare that they are not an effective method of skilling up. They are also, at least on my server, not often seen in the bazaar. During the entirety of my PoI farming, I was only able to manage about 20-30 knuckle joints, and even less carapaces. This was enough farming to triv out gauze presses. I did do cams as they were quick an easy. After getting that triv, I burned through the stock of knuckle joints and carapaces in about 10 minutes and got 2 skillups.

Yttrium ore can be farmed at a rate of about 1 stack/hr if you are not unlucky. Single-ore combines will take you to 290(these are master's sleeves). Then it's up to three-ore combines(legs/BPs) that will take you over 300. Yet, at 290 ish range you will have a decent success rate on AAAA combines. You could toss in as many of those as you can get your hands on, but the skillup rate was not very kind for me on those.

Keep in mind Master armor has a minimum chance to skillup of 5%. You will probably need around 800 yttrium ore to go from 282 to 300(~40 stacks).

That is the route I opted to go with and it worked fairly well.

People were beating you to them. I know I was buying up yttrium ore for up to 500pp each in addition to farming it like mad. (Yes, I am on Maelin) The farming continues to get to 300 smithing though. I hate yttrium ore and the deep, but it's not a bad route. I would never do tinkering to 300 again... never...never... never again.

While it used to be a minimum chance of 5%, it was changed to a minimum chance of +5%. Thats actually a huge difference, as it means you are getting 50%-100% more skillups from it now than you were before (depending on your skill level).
My biggest error was telling my brother he should do masters level armor combines for smithing skill ups. Those darn vah shir smiths use yttrium too, and he prompty bought out the bazaar.

acualy smithing is not that hard to raise to 220 ish as you can vendor buy it all the way to 162(or 168 depending on race) with the culteral sewing kits (a mere 6 pp per combine with 1 pp return if you sell them back) from there if your 162 you obtain a geerlok and farm the fook outta the tizmaks for velium weapons, converson them and make enchanted velium bits to 222. Aprox, 20 pp per combine.

also the yittrum is not that bad to farm if your a dps type. cle can farm the fook outta it with there DON DS spell and it seems that only enc get the shaft when farming this stuff because well none of its charmable

My smithing was actually at 2, and got it up to 45 so far but decided to do a DoD Spell mission. Will get back to smithing after it

Edit: Well, got my smithing up to 117 with the Dairy Spoon / Embroidered Needles / Bile Spine path. Hopefully will continue moving up on Sunday.
