I had a stretch of 25 combines with out skill up, but that’s really nothing to complain about as I have been getting a nice skill up rate since starting this blog. Got to some Elemental Bow Cam combines for free for a guild mate. Did the two he needed for Aid Grimel quest, but he messed up his combine and forgot a component to make the item need for the quest, so he brought me 5 more combines to do. I’m gonna make a run through Gunthak to farm Silver Tipped Quills and Waterlogged Riggings to hit 236 and then will look at Master’s Servolink Armor and the Anizok Devices next.

    Skill Update:
    Tinkering 229
    Rawckett Launcher
79 Gnome Wizard of Sol Ro / Bristlebane
    300 Tinkerer; 287 Jeweler; 258 Brewer; 240 Blacksmith; 237 Fletcher; 208 Potter; 204 Baker; 200 Fisherman; 193 Researcher; 183 Tailor

Well, it has been some time since I've been at the tinkering. Did get my Journeyman's Tradeskill Trophy. On 2/20, I did some quick combines:

      229 Tinkering skill (240 w/Geerlok):
Geerlok Automated Quill (232 Triv) – sssssssf

That's when I ran out of supplies =( Also had my first fail in a long, long time =(. Over the past day or so, I have been farming in Gunthak saving up 21 Waterlogged Rigging and 21 Silver Tipped Quills. So, these combines were my first with my trophy, currently at Level 4, 0%

      229 Tinkering skill (240 w/Trophy):
Geerlok Automated Quill (232 Triv) – ssssssssssssssfsfssss
Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – ssssssssssss - DING 230

      230 Tinkering skill (241 w/Trophy):
Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – sssssssfs

      note: s = success; f = failure

Well, it took me 47 combines to go from 229 to 230. Not an awful thing, but I have been spoiled and I am sure I will go through some more terrible bad runs. Remember, this is my first skill that is this high =). Also, I was successful on 39 of 42 combines with my new trophy. Evolving it 7%. Woot! Haha.

      Skill Update:
      Tinkering 230
      Journeyman Mechanist Trophy, Level 4/7 - 0% to 7%
      Rawckett Launcher
79 Gnome Wizard of Sol Ro / Bristlebane
      300 Tinkerer; 287 Jeweler; 258 Brewer; 240 Blacksmith; 237 Fletcher; 208 Potter; 204 Baker; 200 Fisherman; 193 Researcher; 183 Tailor

I am back with another update, and I am happy to say that I do not need to hang out in Gulf of Gunthak anymore. Man, are those trolls ugly. Lets take a look at the results:

        230 Tinkering skill (241 w/Geerlok):
Geerlok Automated Quill (232 Triv) – ssss – DING 231

        231 Tinkering skill (242 w/Trophy):
        Geerlok Automated Quill (232 Triv) – sssssssf(salv)s
Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – ssssssssss

        After farming some more parts…..

        231 Tinkering skill (242 w/Trophy):
Geerlok Automated Quill (232 Triv) – sssssfsssssssssssssssssss
Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – ssssssssss – DING 232

No more Geerlok Automated Quills for me =)

        232 Tinkering skill (243 w/Trophy):
        Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – sssssssf(salv)sssssssssssss

        Farming, Farming, Farming, Farming

        232 Tinkering skill (243 w/Trophy):
Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – fs – DING 233

        233 Tinkering skill (244 w/Trophy):
Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – sssssss – DING 234

        234 Tinkering skill (245 w/Trophy):
Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – ssssssssssssssss – DING 235

        235 Tinkering skill (246 w/Trophy):
        Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – ssssssssssssf(salv)ssss

Sigh! More farming. C’mon trolls, help out a gnome!

        235 Tinkering skill (246 w/Trophy):
Geerlok Clockwork Contraption (236 Triv) – ssssss – DING 236

        note: s = success; f = failure
        __________________________________________________

It took me 127 combines, to get the last 6 skill ups to finish off the Geerloks. Actually, 136, if you count the 9 (8 successes, 1 failure) from previous post that I ended with. Here is the breakdown:

        230 – 231: 13 combines (12s, 1f)
        231 – 232: 54 combines (52s, 2f)
        232 – 233: 23 combines (21s, 2f)
        233 – 234: 7 combines (7s, 0f)
        234 – 235: 16 combines (16s, 0f)
        235 – 236: 23 combines (22s, 1f)

As for my trophy progression. This run, I did 127 combines with the Trophy equipped with 122 successes. This increased my progression from 7% to 30%. So far, I have had 161 successful combines with the trophy equipped. Thus it is taking me about 5 or 6 successful combines to evolve 1%. At this rate, I should reach level 5 of the trophy in about 370 – 380 more successful combines.

Now, where do I go from here. I’ve been farming in PoI for coiled springs, so I will probably start doing Collapsed Toolkits, along with what I listed in the original posts. I do have about 4 – 6 stacks of Molten Ore ready for my run to 282. I know that I am going to need plenty more of that. But that is about where I stand. Any comments and suggestions are more than welcomed, and thanks to all of the previous comments, especially regarding doing Geerloks.

        Skill Update:
        Tinkering 236
        Journeyman Mechanist Trophy, Level 4/7 - 7% to 30%

What you need imo is a good source of clockwork grease ~ you are going to learn to love these lil grey vials! Best source of them is on the bazaar. Start stockpiling them today if you haven't started already. Check daily for them as well as for coiled springs. If you are diligent about this, you'll soon see a small stockpile develop.

Another thing is having forager friends who you can play with in PoI. You can forage these cw grease there and if your friend has advanced forage AA it really helps to improve the yield. IMO getting the grease is the real bottleneck to doing bow cams. I rarely have more cw grease than elemental bricks.

The next step is to begin stockpiling yttrium. It's sad to see how rare this material is. It's not uncommon to see them selling for 800 pp each on Fennin Ro !

All the other paths to 300 require parts that are too rare to be a practical skill up path. For me (my gnome is at 255), its either bow cams now or master's cultural armor.

I spoke to a lot of random druids on my server and found one who was willing to forage for me, for a fee of course. Next evening he came to me with 18 STACKS.. all rangers, druids, bards and iksars in his family guild found that the price I paid for one grease was very good money for them. And I'm sure it was very good money for them, as well as exp. Most were in their 50ies and they made exp groups there or something

I got all the grease I needed this way in a very short time.

I've been working my gnome lately and he's at 276 now. I've been camping jorpals in PoF for the last few days to get bricks to make molten cams. It goes slowly . /sigh... who ever said Tinkering was easy though hehe. Still saving up my yttrium bricks for when I get to 282.

Could someone tell me the best place to solo farm Yttrium?

I solo in the Deep, seem to get a fairly decent drop rate.

I spent several evenings last week at a place way in the back where the Imperciptable guy spawned (the one with the shrink wand). I was averaging a stack of yttrium for 4 hours about. My gnome is at 290 now and ouch.. gonna have to really start hitting the yttrium mines because its gonna be 3 bricks per combine from now on .

Well, haven't done any combines recently as our guild has been raiding a bit more, so my farming time has dwindled. I am planning on farming at least another stack of coiled springs / foraging clockwork grease (with my bard main). So far I have just over a stack of Yttrium for when I am at the part. But hope to get to some combines in the next couple of week, hopefully =)

                      Thanks for all the input.

So, in regards the cultural question, I wanted to add some input.

My little gnome took a very long time to work through the cam phase of his tinkering skill ups, during which I was slowly but surely also acquiring Yttrium. As he approached 282, I made the decision that i would skill him up in smithing to 174, the point at which master's cultural bricks reach 95% success (with geerlok). So I did that (although I stopped at 173 and then let the bricks themselves skill him up to 182).

From 282 to 290 took only 64 combines. After going 60-plus combines on cams with no skill up, this was heavenly. The next 10 skill up used about 15 stacks of Yttrium (so at 3 per combine, this is 100 combines). This is also quite rapid, albeit expensive.

This was all at 255 INT, since my little gnome is 16th level. The increased boost from doing cultural made this so much of a faster rate of skill up that I was quite happy.

And the smithing was darn easy. It's entirely storebought to 162 and then I used 50 leather paddings to get to 173. Compared to the months it took me to work from 250 to 282, the half a day of smithing involved is trivial.

Now to figure out how to get someone to level up the level 17 (in my case) tinker bot wizzy to level 70, enough AAs to get the tinkering mastery and the salvage mastery and all the extra INT AAs and I'm all set.

There is no tinkering mastery so you're off the hook on that one.
