  • Skilling up

    This post has been updated from various comments to this thread taken into account; thank you again for your help on this. Fish rolls have now been reinstated as the fastest and cheapest way to 135. I've rearranged it to include a section on PoP baking, and shifted the "Halas Meat Pie" avenue to the end as it's not really a common route. I've also taken the "max success route" and switched it from "all vendor bought" (may as well do fishrolls if you want to buy everything!) and included LoY recipes as they have better stats than most of the lower level recipes.

    Last update: 02 May 2003.

    <FONT SIZE="+2">So you want to be a baker?</FONT><P>
    The "simplest" and funnest route to becoming a baker is simply to keep an eye out for anything that looks bakeable and find a way to cook it. However, a lot of people seem to be asking how "best" to get baking up fast and are willing to throw plat at the problem. Ask 20 people and you'll get 20 different responses as to the "best" path, but these are some of the more popular routes with a focus on buyable components.

    There is no benefit (in terms of skill ups) to doing recipes close to your skill level, but it DOES mean you will have a lot more goodies to nibble and pass around. It's a very personal decision, but I've tried to outline some of the more common routes to getting baking up.

    <FONT SIZE="+2">Getting to 191</FONT>

    <FONT SIZE="+1">Jump Ahead</FONT>
    I previously recommended filleting meat to get ahead; however with the price changes this is no longer an economic option. Back to fishrolls.

    The cheapest (and I think fastest) route to get to 191:

    <UL>
    <LI>Purchase fresh fish and batwings (see the http://www.eqtraders.com/location/baking.htmTrade Supplies</A> for all locations; personally I would use Plane of Knowledge to avoid faction issues and have batwings, fresh fish and an oven all in the same zone) and combine them in a spit or oven to make fishrolls to skill level 135.
    <LI>Buy a ton of cheese from Jagged Pine (as an example, you'll need 40 stacks of cheese to run from 135 skill to 189 with 221 wisdom) and a non-stick frying pan (smithed). Note there are two cheese vendors in Jagged Pine (human and gnoll), so you can buy whatever your alignment. To my knowledge, the gnolls will sell to everyone (including Iksars) except possibly High Elves...as long as you do not kill them in JP.

    Head over to a butcher (Thurgadin or Shadow Haven).
    <LI>Combine Bear or Lion meat and bread and cheese and Non Stick frying pan (smithed item, sketch sold in Jagged Pine) in an oven or spit until trivial 191.
    </UL>

    <FONT SIZE="+1">Maximising Successes</FONT>
    These recipes are all based on items that are easy to get, the only additional utensil you will need is a mixing bowl, which does take a top slot. All recipes are combined in an oven or spit. This is slower and less cost-effective but means you can keep your alts and mules fed for life.

    You can obviously skip any of these steps and jump to the next if you can't be bothered stocking up on various ingredients.

    Both Thurgadin and Shadowhaven have butchers and ovens if you are buying meat.
    <UL>
    <LI>Combine various meat and bread to make sandwiches until trivial trivial 31 (note the trivials change depending on the meat, see the http://www.eqtraders.com/secrets/recipes_baking.htmBaking Recipes Page</A> to get them in the right order, too many to list!)
    <LI>Pickle meats (bixie, froglok, lizard, alligator, troll) with jug of sauces and vinegar in a spit until trivial 51.
    <LI>Combine meat (bear, gator, mammoth, lion, rat or wolf) with spices and short beer until trivial 68
    <LI>Pickle velious meats (most common are frost/storm giant meat, wurm, wyvern, but if you want to use dragon meat be my guest) with a jug of oyster sauce and seaweed vinegar until trivial 75 (88 for the giant meat)
    </UL>
    Really don't want to make fish rolls? Okay, head to the Gulf of Gunthak and do some fishing. Some interesting recipes there:

    <UL>
    <LI>Combine gunthak gourami, nonstick frying pan (smithing) and butter (baked) until trivial (and tell us what it is when you find it!)
    <LI>Combine the sea cucumber with a jug of sauces, spices and a pot to 148.
    <LI>If you can forage, combine your bay seaweed with spices and a smoker to 152.
    <LI>Combine Moray Eel, with a jug of sauces and skewers to 155.
    </UL>

    A separate route to skilling up in the Freeport area was put forward by Foxtar:

    <UL>
    <LI>Edible Goo to 21 (whoever named this crap edible should have his or her taste buds checked for signs of life)
    <LI>Wolf and Bear Sandwiches to 31 (I loved getting my revenge that way for the many deaths at their paws and teeth)
    <LI>Batwing Crunchies to 46 (just remember to keep the wings wrapped up, they dry out very quickly)
    <LI>Beer Braised Rat, Bear, Lion or Wolf to 68 (just depending on what I could get my mace on)
    <LI>Fish Fillets to 82 (an endless supply of fish can be found at the Freeport dock)
    <LI>Fish Rolls to 135 (by this time I was starting to get really sick of the taste of fish)
    <LI>Fruit Pies to 142 (I love being able to forage)
    </UL>

    At this point you'll need to start using forages or drops and/or some additional utensils. A typical route would be to hunt brownies and do the chocolate recipes or head to Jagged Pine and experiment with different types of pasta or stick to the pattymelts. If you are hunting in Luclin, centi drops can be combined into steak or stew until 188. Get a dairy spoon and you can make creamy fennel sauce to 156 which will be useful later for your Halas Pies (see below) . I'm loathe to recommend too much from here as it really depends on where you are hunting, your best bet is to take a look at http://www.eqtraders.com/secrets/recipes_baking.htmthe EQTraders recipes</A> and make a decision as to how you want to continue to be a productive baker from there.

    <FONT SIZE="+2">Breaking 200</FONT><P>
    <FONT SIZE="+1">Now what can I make?</FONT>

    Breaking trivial 200 in baking has become a lot easier with recent patches, but it still necessitates a lot of time. Misty Thicket Picnics and Halas Meat Pies (see below) have components that are pretty trivial to get, but it's a lot of combines. If you are trying to avoid setting up a mule for baking one dish alone, you may want to look at these alternatives.

    The key issue is whether it's easier for you to get drops off mobs or to forage. If you can forage, then you'll want to look at Ohabah Truffles, Cinna-Sticks, or vegetable casseroles.

    In my experience the mushrooms are the easiest to get in bulk (coerce foragers or even roll your own) -- look for Luclin zones with a low forage table (Echo Caverns is my favourite) to collect them quickly.

    <UL>
    <LI>Combine 2 milk, benzoin (alchemy supply) and a dairy spoon in a mixing bowl (cream) until trivial 83
    <LI>Combine cream, frosting, brown algae (bought off the brewing vendor in Cobalt Scar), eucalyptus (alchemy supply) in mixing bowl (dark chocolate creme) until trivial 138
    <LI>Combine dark chocolate cream, mushrooms and frosting (Ohabah Truffles, miraculous meal, DEX+6, AGI+6, WIS-1, INT-1) until trivial 202
    </UL>

    Less combines (and more newbies foraging and willing to sell) are the Cinna-sticks, although it does mean killing pixies en masse.

    <UL>
    <LI>Combine 3 pixie dust (farm them in Lesser Faydark) and a cinnamon stick (foraged in Greater Faydark) in a mixing bowl (Pixie Powder Cinnesticks, snack, AGI+2, sv magic+2) to 202
    </UL>

    The Jagged Pine casseroles still involves farming for eggs (Basilisks, found in Lavastorm and Basilisk Genitors found in Jagged Pine) but trivial higher (250) and depending on your level you may be able to exp while you are farming. Cheese is sold in Jagged Pine at two different vendors depending on your faction (human and gnoll vendor). The casserole dish is a pottered item, the sketch is only sold in Jagged Pine.

    <UL>
    <LI>Combine egg, flour and water in a spit (noodles, snack)
    <LI>Foragers: combine Plant Shoots, cheese, noodles and a casserole dish in an oven or spit.
    <LI>Farmers: combine griffon Meat or anaconda meat, cheese, noodles and a casserole dish in an oven or spit.
    </UL>

    <FONT SIZE="+1">I spend my time in the Planes, can't I bake there?</FONT>

    If you have access to the Plane of Power zones, then you may want to look at foraging or fishing for easy skill ups past 191. Note that you don't need to use the Tanaan oven for these if you have a collapsible spit, so you can spend a lovely sunny afternoon fishing and combining.

    <UL>
    <LI>You can forage safely at the zone in to Plane of Justice (Tier 1, as long as you have PoP and are level 46 or over, you can enter) which will get you cockroaches, breadcrumbs (see fishing option below) and justice fruit.
    <LI>Combine four cockroaches with a cup of sugar (bought in Plane of Knowledge) in a spit until skill level 202
    <LI>Storm Salmon (Plane of Storms), Giant Halibut and Giant Snapper (Plane of water) can be combined with a jug of sauces in a tanaan oven to 208.
    <LI>Breaded varieties of these fish will take you to 222: combine the fish, breadcrumbs (the ones you foraged in PoJ), jug of sauce and garnish.
    <LI>You're finally ready for Justice Fruit Pies: combine the foraged justice fruit, a clump of dough, frosting, 2 celestial essense and muffin tin in an oven or spit until trivial 250.
    </UL>

    <FONT SIZE="+1">From 0 to 226 with Halas 10lb Meat Pie</FONT>
    This route is specifically aimed at skilling up en route to making the famous Halas pies, although you'll need to do a <i>lot</i> of mammoth and wolf hunting to max out on it. Lion and Bear meat can both be bought at the butchers. This isn't the simplest of methods, but if your goal is simply to make Halas Pies, you may as well skill up on the pre-combines.

    Additional items you will need to make or have made for you: a dairy spoon, a filleting knife, a mixing bowl and a pie tin.

    This gets a bit silly because you need the cream to make the creamy sauce, and the creamy sauce trivials <i>under</i> the cream, so you'll need to swap back and forth between the recipes if you want to stay under the trivial. On the other hand, fennel is expensive! So the cheaper route is to not make the sauce until cream is trivial.

    Be sure to look at the different types of egg as the dough yield varies tremendously (this is true for noodles too).

    <UL>
    <LI>Combine egg (farmed), flour and milk in a mixing bowl (clump of dough) until trivial 17.
    <LI>Combine 2 milk, benzoin (alchemy supply) and a dairy spoon in a mixing bowl (cream) until trivial 83.
    <LI>Combine cream, fennel (alchemy supply) and flour in a mixing bowl (creamy fennel sauce) until trivial 75.
    <LI>Combine filleting knife and one piece of meat (fillet of ____) to trivial 143.
    <LI>Combine fillet of ___ and creamy fennel sauce (___ fillet in cream) to trivial 152.
    </UL>

    Now you are ready to make pies until trivial 226:

    <UL>
    <LI>Combine 2 clumps dough, wolf fillet in cream, bear fillet in cream, lion fillet in cream, mammoth fillet in cream and a sage leaf (alchemy supply) with a pie tin in the oven (won't fit in a spit)
    </UL>

    This will create six pies: miraculous meal, DEX 5, STA 5, AGI 5, HP 30. These weigh 7 stone and only fit into GIANT sized slots.

    <B>Note:</B> you need to watch the yields on this. For example, if you wanted to do 80 combines, assuming you never failed you would need:
    <blockquote>

    80 fileted mammoth meat in sauce = 80 fileted mammoth meat = 8 mammoth meat
    80 fileted wolf meat in sauce = 80 fileted wolf = 8 wolf meat
    80 fileted bear meat in sauce = 80 fileted bear = 80 bear meat
    80 fileted lion meat in sauce = 80 fileted lion = 80 lion meat

    320 creamy fennel sauce = 54 cream, 54 flour, 54 fennel
    54 cream = 7 benzoin, 14 milk
    160 clumps of dough = (varies based on egg)
    80 sage leaves
    1 pie tin
    </blockquote>

    (Thanks to Feoni for doing the maths)

    <FONT SIZE="+2">I'm almost there, what are my options to 250!</FONT><P>

    To find out the recipes for these, take a look at http://www.eqtraders.com/secrets/recipes_baking.htmEQtraders recipes</A>.

    </UL>

    Take a look at http://mboards.eqtraders.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=64this post</A> for details on making picnics.

    Or by being lucky with drops (note I'm only including drops from Tier 1 planes):
    <UL>
    <LI>Anaconda melt (250)
    <LI>Cheesy anaconda casserole (250)
    <LI>Cheesy griffon casserole (250)
    <LI>Dragon Steak (250)
    <LI>Candied Tae Ew (250)
    <LI>Tae Ew Pie (250)

    <LI>Swamp Rat Crunchies (250)
    <LI>Blood Raven Stew (250)
    <LI>Hobgoblin Surprise (250)
    </UL>
    Or by dedicated foraging and some eggs:
    <UL>
    <LI>Cheesy Vegetable Casserole (250)
    <LI>Justice Fruit Pies (250)
    </UL>

      I'm at 206, and not a forager, but do know one...

      We've been camped out in Jagged Pine for a while now, killing griffons, anacondas, and my forager friend picking up plant shoots from the ground. (and of course checking the vendors, but darn patches...) We are getting good xp, though the anacondas nearly kill us. I was also able to buy a small amount of Griffon meat from the bazaar, but I don't want to spend too much doing that since the yield on this stuff is just one per combine.

      Luckily the skill ups are coming along fairly nicely.... I did about 30 combines the other day, and had two skill increases.

      I saw somewhere (not sure where), that someone was making Anaconda Stir Fry to skill up on.... Not sure why you would want to do that... You are using two precious commodities on one combine (anaconda meat and plant shoots). Much better to go buy some bread and cheese and use the anaconda meat on the melts and the plant shoots on veggie casseroles.

        No, I didn't forget it, I excluded things that need access to tier 2 zones in the interests of brevity and in the hopes I wouldn't end up causing more questions.

          Yep saw this as well (same thing with the pate's, which also need a meat and a plant shoot)... I can't see why you would want to half the amount of potential combines you can do. I made griffon, anaconda and plantshoot casseroles whenever I manage to get some in stock again (melts are all triv).

                This is a great post. I really hope it can be made into a sticky once you feel you are finished with it. It’s the answer to what is most likely the most popular trade skill question.

                One thing you might want to address, if it doesn’t add too much to your guide, is some of the yields. Those who have never made Halas Pies, for example, could get into a lot of trouble with their bank space if they buy stacks of 20 for making cream and sauce. My bank box is still overflowing with it and I think I may have to just sell some of it off. And I’ve found the noodle yields per egg to be rather frustrating for Cheesy Vegetable Casserole. Looted basilisk eggs yield 15 dough but, I believe, only two noodles. I didn’t want to waste my basilisk eggs on noodles so I’ve been farming snakes in newbie areas. Between the farming time and all the single combines, I’m not sure this is the best rout to take. *shrugs* But someone new to baking the casserole might be in for a nasty surprise if they haven’t looked up the egg yield.

                Thanks for putting this information together.

                  Very good point, I'll look to add yield information and on the misty thicket picnics link to the other post which goes into detail of how much of each base product you need to make a batch.

                    Eggs for Noodles

                    I've found that the WW/ToV egg forages to be much better for making noodles. There's 3 kinds of eggs that you can forage so they come along rather quickly. The dragon eggs yield 8 noodles, wurm eggs yield 4, and drake eggs yield 3. Keep in mind to have decent CoV if you want to do this, or it might cost you more than a little time.

                      Wow, great. I can't forage, and my foraging friends tend to be tailors, so I didn't have these figures. Will update shortly to include this, thanks.

                        Oh no! a mistake!

                        Under the section about making Halas Pies after 191 skill, it says:

                        Combine egg (farmed), flour and milk in a mixing bowl (clump of dough) until trivial 17

                        But under the section about not making Pies after 191 skill, it says:

                        Combine egg, flour and milk (noodles, snack)

                        Water needs to be substituted for milk in the ingredients list.

                        Great guide, but I just wanted to point that out as it may cause confusion.

                          Just know that with the money you can selkl drake and Dragons eggs for, you can buy Hundreds of Snake eggs.

                          Dragon Eggs are used for tailoring and fishing. They make decent items.

                          Drake Eggs are used it Velious Tailoring, and make good items.

                          Tailors buy both for a fair amount. Especially Dragon Eggs.

                              Excellent Guide!

                              My halfling rogue is helping a guildie do his Shar Val beastlord tradeskills, so I MQ'd the citizenship, and started the rogue baking parts at 72 skill. The easiest thing for me was to just make the East Commons to East Freeport run, making Fishrolls from bat wings and fresh fish.

                              Over the course of a couple nights, because I bored easily, I went from 72 to 127 skill...55 points on 560 combines. That is the part that I was most happy about, approximately 1 skill up every 10 attempts, or 2 skillups per stack. The Shar Val rogue baking for the Sonic Weapons trivials at 130 to 135, so I am within range.

                              I did this with no buffs, other than my own Rogue-STR buff, Mrylokar's Vambraces. I have a feeble WIS and INT

                              EDIT: 12/23
                              I finished baking to 135 on 37 more skillups, so my summary is 72 to 135, 65 skillups on a total of 597 tries...(596, the last one to confirm the trivial about a skillup every 9 attempts, with no buffs and simple rogue wisdom and intelligence...
