Not all races can make silk armor. Luckily for me, I have a wizard friend who is also working tailoring so we do a template exchange for the armor capable templates.

Yes, I am barbarian, so basically.....The hours farming were greatly wasted, since I do not make the silk armor. Now if ore was dropping too, than I could look on a bright side. But, didn't happen. As with all great patches, we can expect 1 or 2 screw ups to greatly waste our time and efforts.

Barbarians can still make Augmentations with silk and spinneret fluid. It might be more of a pain to get the patterns because the cultural quest is more time consuming, but if you already have it for other purposes burn up the patterns youre unlikely to use (like wrists and helms).

In case I'm misunderstanding the charts...

Correct me if I am misreading. All of these pristine leather mask templates I've made seem to be pure vendor fodder -- they can't be used to create anything else, so I shouldn't hold on to them? (Funny how there's a matching marrow, but it's nearly as useless...?)

It's useless. For leather, the sullied, rough, fine, superb, flawless, and exquisite animal pelt is used in cultural armor. The rest of animal pelts dead ends at templates and are mainly for skilling up and possible future expansions.
