  • Storm volaas hair

So I have an enchanter alt and I figured I'd go get some storm volaas hair for him to make some master's armor, are these guys some kind of joke? First of all, they are all packed close and even with harmo they path over each other and cause huge trains. Second of all, there's named ones in there that have to be avoided, and a new epic guy for SKs that hits like a truck. I consider myself pretty well equipped and I box a druid so I have pretty good healing, if you have 2 or 3 of these giants beating on you at once it's a real pain, plus they nuke, dispell and debuff you. If you use root for crowd control they just dispell the root. I had to evac at least once per pull it seemed like. Why couldn't they put the giant hair in some place like BoT? I only had time to get a couple hairs so can't really comment on the drop rate, but compared to other cultural stuff the drops and difficulty is in a league of its own.

It would be bearable if the main room wasn't bugged. Having 30 giants packed together shortly after server up is a pain. At least my kill rate as cleric is so low that the other rooms have enough of them to keep me busy.

      Mob Level

Putting the mob in a level 62+ zone doesn't help. The level 55 players can't even get into the zone that they are supposed to be able to farm for their armor. Devs put themselves in a corner on this one making the drop specific to one mob and putting it on a mob that is 7 levels higher than what many of the other cultures have to farm. The drop needs to be placed on a level 55 mob but they don't have a mob that it is likely to drop from. Other masters level drops drop in non-keyed, non-level restricted zone or else tier 1 PoP zones. In reality they should make it a drop in some zone like Kael where there are storm giants. But then they run into a level problem there I think too ....as in the mobs being too low in level.

Sorry Thalia but thats not true. I'm a halfling tailor, and our masters cultural drop is great reptile hide, which only drops in Veeshans peak, not Cazic thule like it has been stated. I've had guildies sit in CT killing for hours and not one great reptile hide drop, yet another guildie was killing in veeshan's peak and had a hide drop iirc. So that theory you have sounds good, but isnt true in reality.

You agree that the fix to not being able to farm a level 62 mob is to put the drop in a more difficult zone? (ie Tier 3 zone.)

I'm sorry but that rationale does not make sense. Some poeple are having problems because they can only farma stack of Shisshar scales in an hour. It's been months since DoN came out and I can say with certainty that I have not been able to get a full stack of Storm Volaas hair in that time.

I have heard reports of the hides dropping. I was listening with half an ear though since it will be some time before I have my Half Elf work on tailoring for her armor.

It is reported that Gargoyles in the Hole level 55 and higher drop the masters level component for Human smithing. Thus by the same resoning if a mob were to be found that wasn't in a restricted zone it would have to be level 55. I would expect it to be a rarer drop if it was a mob that could be soloed though but equal to that of Shisshar scales. That is IF it was balanced. We all know that it isn't balanced at all and that some have it musch easier than other on skilling up using DoN cultural.

Hmm, I believe they drop in Plane of Earth also (not that that is much help, either )

I think the cultural armor is meant to be imbalanced because otherwise they could've just picked some random world drop for one drop fits all race like the GM armor. You win some, you lose some. Plane of Storm XP is actually not bad. It's higher XP mod then any other PoP zone except Plane of Earth and Sol Ro Tower and if you're level 70 there's nothing in PoP besides Sol Ro/EP that will qualify for the -5 or less bonus anyway.

Don't the great reptile hides drop in plane of nightmare as well? Either way the drop rates compared to shissar scales and yttrium (other Master's cultural drops) are ridiculous.

Im sorry Thalia that is what i was referring to, as veeshan's peak is a long quest of camping mobs to get key parts. And if the case that the hides drop in earth, that happens to be a flag zone. Simply i was just trying to point that as a halfling tailor masters armor isnt an option for me, as it appears to be for you.

And to answer the coment on Ponightmare, as far as i know only the great reptile tooth drops there. i havent yet heard confirmation that the hides drop there, but that isnt to say they dont.

Great reptile hides only drop in VP and CT and the drop rate in CT for me has been 1/180. The mobs that drop them summon and are pretty tough (for me anyway - 70 qvic geared bard). I have checked the bazaar nearly every day since DoN was released and found 3 for sale in that time. I have vendor mined 2. So, thats 6 in total, admittedly I have given up farming them as the drop rate is too depressing.
Anyways IMO great reptile hide users have it worse, however I agree that SoE should balance out the races. Discrimination shouldn't happen in a fantasy game!
There have been a number of posts on this subject here and on sony's TS forum and there hasn't been much interest from the dev's so far. Finger's crossed they change it and allow us tailors a different path than othmirs.

Since DoN release, I've seen more than a few Great Reptile Hides for sale in the Bazaar on Xegony.

I've seen exactly 2 Storm Volaas Hairs for sale... and I'm still kicking myself for not buying the one.

Also remember, it takes twice as many Storm Volass Hairs to make a piece of armour as it does Great Reptile Hides.

Storm Valaas Hair is one that will change in the recipe (it will no longer be used) because it is not level appropriate for the combine it is used in.

There is absolutely no ETA for this. Sorry.

Why would they intentionally release racially imbalanced content? I struggle to find a reason, unless they are having trouble managing the number of race types and would like trim down the number by "motivating" players to put certain characters aside.

Actually, I believe there was a rush to realease this expansion and some kinks got through unintentionally. DoN was supposed to come with a much more involved set of tradeskill drops, but time restraints ultimately resulted in a trimmed down version. I speculate that imbalanced drop rates and mob levels were unintentional. I further speculate that it was not originally planned to have all races bottleneck on the same components (GDH, MDS, and CSS). I further further speculate that it was unintentional that Silk classes needed 2 silks while every other class only needs 1 hide or scale.

I know, I know. A lot of specualtion, but I find it easier to stomach issues with unbalanced game mechanics if I can believe they are accidental. If imbalance is intentional, and the game designers really do favor certain races over others....well, I just cant see a good business reason for that.

I hope you will make them easier to get overall. If the content it drops from is lower level but harder to get to (like deep within the hole) or rare, it's not going to help us.

Storm giants are hard mobs, true, but they easy to get to, and can be singled.
