Absor has stated that this is a bug.

Who knows when it will get Smashed.

Hopefully those that spent training points will have them refunded. Likewise for the training cash. My guess though is that they will not be...

I thought I read a post from Maddoc that said this was a mistake, but I can't seem to find it right now.

EDIT: Correction, it was Absor that said it, not Maddoc. His comment was "My understanding is that this is a bug." Link

Whoops I posted in alchemy but forgot my ink-smudged allies. Don't waste your money skilling up in alchemy and research over 200. According to Maddoc, "It's a bug, and it's possible that those skill points over the current cap may disappear someday." That was in private conversation, not a post somewhere, so you'll have to take my word for it. But don't spend bunches of money skilling up beyond 200 because it might not last.

Thanks for the info. This looks like yet another SOE patch error.

It's mistakes like these that errode people's faith and enjoyment in the game. I was quite excited by the thought of some changes to research - but if SOE now go ahead and 'undo' what they got wrong with no warning or compensation for those who payed out plat and skill points I think they'll see yet more people walking away from their game.

I hope they take this opportunity to do something constructive for the research community.

                From EQLive forums:

                Thursday July 1st Update 12:00pm

                - More AA fixes and updates

                - Minor fixes to the Customer Server Window

                - Shadowstep will now update the players position correctly for other people. Before it would show them standing in that spot for a few seconds.

                - (Test Only) Fixed /pet report after you zoned with a pet, it was showing a list of unknown spells. Should really be fixed this time.

                - Those who managed to get their research skill above 200 will have it reset back to 200. Sorry about that.

                - Bard issues with "Your spell is too powerful for you intended target." should be fixed.

                - Some small fixes with the tribute revamp.

Note: Getting some bugs on this and wanted to clarify that Suspended Pets DO NOT zone and that it is working as intended.

You're not the only ones that this change is going to affect, but it is an unfortunate necessity.

In all fairness, we need to set everyone back to the cap now to ensure that it's a level playing field later -- As much fun as it might be to leave your research and alchemy skill alone now, I doubt those who didn't take advantage of the bug will find it very amusing when we do increase the cap.

I'd like to say I have an answer for those of you who spent skill points on this, but I don't I am, however, going to find out on Tuesday to see if there's anything we can do on that front.

                    Thank-you Maddoc for the reply.

Lets be fair here - most people had no idea this was a 'bug' when they went out and trained up research. As you'll see in this thread, many people were excited at the thought of research getting some much-needed attention and were pondering if they could in future make new or higher level spells.

This 'bug' wasn't of the players' creation

I appreciate the apology in the patch notes and also that mistakes do happen but I think it's only right that those who spent the skill points and the plat get re-paid.

Alchemy should never have been artificially capped at 200 to begin with -- the level cap is quite adequate by itself.

                          Well...

I certainly hope that in addition to my 50 training points, that Sony reimburses me the 4,910 platinum it cost as well.

Again, to reiterate - this is a bug of YOUR making.

                            Oh please.

How many people really did not think that this was a bug ?

Lets see no announcment from SoE
No in game lore or change to the trainers.
In fact no indication of intent at all.

And suddenly you can skill passed the acnowledged cap.

I'm willing to beleve that there are a (very) few people who had no awarness of the cap and had only started to look at reserch recently, but I suspect that you could count these on one hand.

Everyone else (my self included) knew it was a bug or at the very least a leak of code that should not have been released yet.

Look at it from SoE's point of view, if these were the bad days we could all be warned for exploiting a bug.

Sure argue to get the points back and the cash, but to suggest that you spent those points with a totally clear heart is IMOSHO streaching the truth just a little.

Sorry for the slightly rantish nature of this, but there are pleanty of high horses that players can legitimatly get on that make this one horse too far.

                            All IMHO,

                            Jarak.

                              Why 250?

When I noticed that I could train my enchanter past 200, I spent a few points to take her to 205. With a geerlock I think this gives me the maximum possible success rate for level 60 spells (trivial 227).

The only reason I can imagine that people have spent thousands training to 250 is because they realised it was a bug and that the decided to take advantage of it before it was fixed. I can't think of any other benefit of having research at 250.

                              Or am I too cynical?

                                ?????????

The only reason I can imagine that people have spent thousands training to 250 is because they realised it was a bug and that the decided to take advantage of it before it was fixed. I can't think of any other benefit of having research at 250.
Why on earth would somebody spend thousands to raise their research for a limited time given Sony's track record and admitted CS stance?

It's not as if research is a high value skill where you can make major amounts of money selling your wares. The drops are rare and often the components sell for more than the end item.

Everyone else (my self included) knew it was a bug or at the very least a leak of code that should not have been released yet.
That is an assumption. Did you take a poll of every single person who raised their Research skill?

Sure argue to get the points back and the cash, but to suggest that you spent those points with a totally clear heart is IMOSHO streaching the truth just a little.
                                Goodness, now we're all liars.
