  • I camped most of mine duoing at zone in. If you can get a good group together pulling the spiders past second castle is better exp but either works for drop.

    • Ring, Signet of the Arcane and Marked Runed Signet done.

      Smithing: 5/5, 5/5, 3/5 (235+Geerlok)
      Brewing: 9/9 (250)
      Jewelcraft: 3/3 (250+JCM3)
      Pottery: 4/5, 3/4 (250)
      Tailoring: 2/4 (250)
      Fletching: 2/2 (250)
      Baking: 3/8 (250)

Most of the sap I used for the tailoring step came from the yellow con spiders just before the 2nd castle, though several came from the ones at the zone line. The drop rate isn't terribly good, though I found that I felt the pain of it a lot less when I was in an experience group.

      • Maldisan is that 3/4 on your pottery an actual failure on combining the waters in the urn? or something else? I've NEVER heard of someone failing the waters into the pot combine and am rather disturbed now if it is failable.

            • Skillcheck for Brewing narrowed down

Not sure if it was already reported here:
Aid Grimel checks for brewing skill 219 or 220 (unmodified) before he gives you the barrel.
I tried with 218 and was turned down; skilled up to 220 and got the barrel.

                • I see some talking about the value of this quest to those that are in PoTime...I have to agree, seeing some that are dropping now, this earring is really not so impressive.

BUT...just because somone is in the Elementals, it does NOT mean they will have instant access to Time, nor will they have instant access to any of the many nice earring upgrades. The amount of guilds currently in the Elementals on your server will greatly effect the advancement. Also, your guild's handling of points or whatever will greatly determine your ability at getting whatever loot there is to be had.

I think this earring is a great upgrade for most and to me, it's well worth it to do...It is a point free upgrade that will allow me to upgrade other slots that I just can't possibly upgrade without raiding.

As far as the Obsidianwood Sap...I have seen no difference in the drop rate between GY area or in the "desert" area between the castles. As a matter of fact, I have noticed a decrease in the drop rate in the desert area.

so far I am 0 for 2 tries on the robe....but I keep working to raise my tailoring skill as I also farm for more sap. currently I am 226 skill and also have geer lok

                    • Yeah, it was a failure in the firing step.

Unlike every other firing in the game, it seems, the firing of the urn is not trivial at 250.

I honestly never noticed that it wasn't trivial until I failed it... then I noticed that there was no trivial message when I succeeded on it a few minutes later.

                      • Ok, I actually have to disagree with the majority of the posters here. I don't think the rewards need an upgrade. While I think it would be nice if people could choose between Arcane and Mighty, I don't think this earring should be the end-all item from the game.

To be honest I hate this earring. It turned tradeskills from something the majority of people did for the enjoyment of them, into a race to PL yourself to 220, funnelling in as much plat as needed to reach the goal. I am not bashing those people; they are as much a part of the game as anyone else. I understand their motivations and have no problems with them, however I wish there was an outlet other than tradeskills for them to binge their enthusiasm on.

My server has two guilds in PoTime, mine included, and I think the loot there is deterring others from the need to PL on tradeskills for the sake of this quest. I am so grateful for this. I have to admit I am tired of the tells from people I never met, ie "Hi there, I have a million plat to spend, could you tell me the fastest way to skill up from 0-220 smithing?"

For people who love tradeskills for the pure love of them, there should be little disappointment in the rewards. I look at it purely as an unexpected surprise. I planned to 250 all skills as soon as PoP came out; the fact I get a somewhat decent item for my efforts is lovely. I think perhaps it was on purpose by Sony to have this be a minor reward for the committed, not the holy grail of items to create a thousand members of the 1750 club per server.

                        • I did jeweling back in the day cause it was good money and could make some nice resist gear.

I did the rest of the stuff up the realistic minimums to easily do the 7th shawl. I did smithing when 8th shawl came out, and got first 8th shawl on the server. I bitched the whole time i was doing tradeskills, but when I was done, I was always happy with the reward, and thinking back it never seemed all that bad.

I did all them up to 220-240 for this earring. I moaned and complained and all that the whole like 3 months i was getting tailoring up lol. Told people to just kill me if I ever started tradeskilling again, cause I knew I'd hate it, and I kinda did. Dumped in hundreds of thousands of plat and hours and hours and hours of farming. Finished most the skilling up a few weeks ago, but hadn't gotten all the parts to the earring. Today finished earring. But what I discovered a few weeks ago, when i finish skilling up, is that I really enjoy tradeskills. I don't enjoy skilling up, but I LOVE making stuff for my guild, myself, my twinks, my friends, or to sell. And I make a ton of it with my guild, since we recently completely rebuilding itself and doing the EPs again that we were doing 3 months ago. People need and want the gear and it feels very nice to be directly helping to gear up our new recruits. I make decent money smithing stuff on my own, and I have a ton of fun doing it. I thank the Aid Grimmel quest for giving the motivation to do tradeskills, and am very happy that I did the quest and with all that I am capable of doing with the side-product of having a very respectable set of tradeskills. =) Not to mention the earring IS good, even if it's not the best thing out there. I agree - it's a relatively easy reward to those who love tradeskills and go to 1750 anyways, and happen to be in a EP guild. It shouldn't be the carrot. But for me it was, but now I see all the work doing so much more than just getting me the earring. While I'm in no hurry to get to 1750...quite happy for the most part with 240+mod

blah blah blah Grats me Signet of the Arcane today.

My only complaint is the icon. I've always hated that icon lol!

                          • about MQ

I read through most of this to find contradicting information about MQ'ing during certain parts of this quest. I can CONFIRM, the 2nd earring can be MQ'd from someone who is 220+ brew/smith to someone who is only 220+ brewing. They recieved the 2nd earring, and have since gone on and finished through 4th with under 220 smithing. My question is, will they be able to do the final combine with councilman assuming they have the 7th earring and a hope stone, or does he make a final check on all skills??? please dont speculate, answer if you have tried or know someone firsthand who has. Thanks for the info.

                            • Yeah, I"m curious about this as well. I"ve chained the first/second earring to several people without the smithing skill over 220. Smithing is the biggest pain in the rear. If they need to do smithing I need to make sure htey know that. I did however tell them I wasn't sure if they could do final turn in. I'm all done with my earring. Just need to wait on bow parts cause I failed the first try at 250. Go figure. =(

                              • You won't be able to get the signet of the arcane until you have 220 smithing. We have a couple people in my guild who got up to the point of the final turn in with out 220 smithing and he doesn't give you the proper response. They are stuck at the marked runed signet until they get thier smithing up. I'm not 100% sure if either one has actually tried the turn in yet but I know they are both working on getting thier smithing up to finish it off.
