  • /em smacks forehead, exclaiming "d'oh!"

Dedicating this thread to tradeskill bloopers and blunders, starting off with one of my own. I hope others will add to it.

So I'm a baker. I dabble a bit in all of the tradeskills (thanks to the shawl quests, and now the new earring quest), but baking is the one I really love (I like it enough that I have two characters with 210+ baking skill).

I started out baking on my druid alt in an effort to find something to do with all the goodies I was compulsively foraging (woe to my bank when I discovered that the multiple yields per combine resulted in less bankspace after than before baking), got her to 212 then decided to GM it on my main instead. And no patty melts for me, thank you! I did things the old fashioned way, making a bit of this and a little of that, ever and always coming back to my EQTC cookbook to see what I needed to farm next. I have to admit to being a lazy baker - I do little to no experimenting, I just check the recipe pages to see what's what.

Planes of power was particularly exciting, all the new recipes! And delightfully enough, the required ingredients were readily available in the zones I was hunting for xp - tactics, BoT, and HoH.

It was in one such experience group, camping the turkeywasps (some call them mephits) at the top of BoT when a discussion about tradeskills evolved. This was not unusual at all, since the denmother happened to be with me at the time, along with the houseogre. Different alternatives for raising baking were mentioned, and I mentioned that I didn't think that hero sandwiches were worthwhile for skilling off of, too much of a pain. The houseogre asked why I thought that, and I started ranting about the pains of making bread tins and burning bread.

Imagine my reaction when the denmother turned to me and asked if I realized that vendor-bought bread worked in the recipe, that I didn't have to bake it from scratch.

Needless to say I turned a bit red, as my groupmates (a few of us tradeskill together frequently) exclaimed their relief at not having to hear my complaints about burning the bread anymore. For some reason it had never occurred to me to even try the vendor bought bread... when I saw the recipe for bread on the page, I assumed that it was somehow different from the vendor bought variety.

I still believe that the sandwiches taste better on fresh baked bread, but I must admit I haven't bothered since.

      Hehe, interesting thread...

I'll be expecting to see a lot of "put the stack instead of one item" stories. Not funny in the least, but nevertheless, a forehead smacking action follows

Anyways, my lil blooper is about Tailoring.

I make Wood Elf Cultural often enough, that I know the recipe off the top of my head, and where everything is sold, and the number of bonings required.

So before I get to the final combines, I have to visit the Fier'dal (Woodie) Forge in Kelethin to make infused mithril boning. After I make my boning, I proceed to stick all the required items into the kit. "These items do not combine in this container" or something to that effect. I think "what??? i've done this umpteen times, and I swear that this is the correct recipe!" So I check my notes, recipe was correct, hmm...try again. No combine.

Anyways, the "kit" was actually the forge. I tried to sew armor in the forge. DOH! Anyways, this didn't happen just once, but almost EVERY time I sit down to do a run of combines

I know I have a TON of bloopers and "doh's" like those mentioned, but since they made me feel so silly, I put them out of my mind. One of the ones that comes to mind that happened recently was when I was making blessed fishing poles for a few friends. I had stacks and stacks of spiderling silk and was making the silk cords. I had already made all the silk thread. Well, on a few occasions (not just once ) I combined TWO silk threads instead of three thereby ending up with silk bandages. The first time it happened, I said ok, my mistake. The second time, I was annoyed at myself LOL

In the end, I think I had about 5 silk bandages out of 40 cords.

          Those silk bandages are Uber

Seriously though, has anyone actually made these to use?

If they had a bind wound mod of 5% or something, or even if they had a yield of 4 it wouldn't be so bad...

But 4 spiderling silks, and 2 sub combines, for 1 bandage, even a rich monk wouldn't waste the time to save .3 stones.

          -------

I thankfully haven't had any costly bloopers... I have tried to do pottery in an oven... the thing shoulda been hot enough .

I've also tried to fire stuff instead of making it on the pottery wheel, which I just think would take a bit more skill.

I have bought 4 stacks of scorpion I think it was, instead of rat/gator/snake for GLM (are those even right? I know where they are on the vendor, but I am going braindead right now), I don't know if I figured it out with a DNC in my mixing bowl, or just looked again.

Hehe just thought of another blooper that I did, actually, though, it's somewhat of a bug.

Imbuing emeralds with my druid alt. If you imbue an emerald and leave it on your cursor, then imbue another one, the newly imbued emerald poofs. Usually when I imbue emeralds I'm doing something else, mostly other subcombines for whatever item I'm working on, and tend to sometimes "forget" to drop the newly imbued emerald in my bag.

I think I must have lost about 2-3 stacks of emeralds this way before I got really careful about being sure my cursor was empty before casting another imbue.

This bug happens with "any" imbued gem I found.

Of course, no tradeskill blooper would be complete without the usual "I put 20 instead of 1 item in a container for combining. I've done that with celestial essence, emeralds (making blessed dust) and *gasps and cries* blue diamonds.

It didn't take me long to realize that Verant didn't "fully" fix the stacking/combine issues.

Mine usually involve walking out of wherever I am tradeskilling and forgetting to change armor/weapons. I don't know how many times I have attempt to kill something equipped with my ultra uber Geerlok All Purpose Baking Utensil. Unfortunately, as those in serverwide chat will verify, I am a slow learner... DOH!!!

Hmmm so does doing about 150 or so imbues before realiseing that I dont have to actuaylly pick up the emerald of the stack first count? I must admit I felt pretty silly when I found out I didnt have to pick one up before I cast Imbue.

Hmm... I've done a number of oopses and 'dohs', like everyone else.

The one that sticks out the most was when I had finally collected enough superb hides for a run of 20 acrylia studded masks, which I was hesitant to do since I could sell the parts for so much pp and buy some decent gear instead. Sit down to make the Heady papaleas in PoK then trot my way to Kaladim to find my favorite skilling spot, sit down.. DNC...

                  Huh?

                  1 Stud, 1 pelt, 1 bottle, 1 pattern, right?

D'oh! Papaela bark tannen, not heady papalea! There's some money down the tubes. Went back, made some tannen, sat down again, and got 3 skill ups from 20 combines. So it wasn't all bad.

Perhaps not a tradeskill blunder, but a long time back I tried to make the Trueshot Longbow with my ranger, got his skill to about 135, farmed all the peices for days, sat down in front of his trainer, failed 10 attempts, stood up, proceeded to rant, forgot to press enter, hit 'A', trainer smacks him upside the head, and I end up having to run, naked, from Freeport back to Kelethin (Pre-LoY, mind you)

As any brewer can atest to the mind-numbing repetitive boredom that occurs when combing the same 4 components over and over, my blooper was due to a bug and inattetionon my part.

I had a bag full of heady kiola sap and another bag with bottles and water. Well alt-click,click,click,click combine. Poor me got lazy and shift-clicked the heady sap and lost 2 stacks of sap with a combine. YUP you can combine multiple saps (stacked even) in the brew barrel and still get 1 heady. I have done this one several other accounts. Really cheeses my hiney.

It falls under the mouse stacking bug, which is why smelting FS weapons isn't always economical (if you group with the person smelting, you see that some of the smelts yield 2 small blocks).

It also occurs when chain casting viscous mana (I lose 1-2 every run of 4 stacks) and distilled mana (yeah, I verified it). Haven't verified with purified mana... yet.

I don't quite get why the result of an imbune has to appear on your cursor and not just drop to inventory.

True that it makes it harder to macro.. but if macroing is the problem then it's only one extra step for the macroer to take into account, almost zero effort, while leaving the rest of us to have to add another click to our long list of clickies per combine.

I almost wonder if Sony gets paid for every time we click a mouse button. =P

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has mucked up

I did a run of Acrylia studded masks and imagine my surprise after selling them all I went to change out of my "wisdom suit" to find that my Tribal War Mask with the same graphic was missing from inventory. Sold for the same lousy 1pp and a few gp and it went poof since all the merchants slots were full. ops:

You have no idea how loud I laughed at this.

Co-workers three rows over decided that maybe they should keep their distance from the loon.

My "Uh-Oh" wasnt that bad, but still made me go "Doh!" in the channel. Today I sat down to do my normal run of 40 HMP combines. Of course i equipped my CHA stiens and faction necklace(I do it in SH) to save money. I gather everything up, do all the subcomines(/rude failing dough 3 times!), sit down and proceed to bake. Alls normal, till the windows do that transparency thing, and I realize, Ive still got my CHA gear on! I was under by 19 wisdom, thankfully I was eatting some MTP so I didnt even have less.

Oh well, I still got 3 skill ups!

I have to edit this in. Just a minute ago, I was moving furniture around the house because we just had our walls painted. I picked up a pewter figuring and thought to myself "Wow, this things heavy, I could skill up my muscles with this". Sure it wasnt a /D'oh! in game, but it sure was out of game
