  • For those of you who don't browse the smithing forums, many of these questions were answered in a long thread there.
But the gist of it is:
11 levels of drops (maybe 12, Lakeskaters in Vald are dropping Flawless Spinneret Fluid). All can be used for the first tier of combines (templates) but only 4 of those levels are used for secondary combines (armor).
Level 11 (Superb/cobalt) makes the Elaborate Armor
Level 9 (Fine/Rhenium) makes the Intricate armor
Level 10 (Excellent/Tungsten) is only good for skill ups (and I am pretty sure the corresponding loam/fluid/marrow is completely unused)
Only 2 of the other 8 levels will actually have secondary combines (I forgot to look which ones when I was on Test). So there are quite a few useless drops at this time (the plan is to someday move other non-cultural combines like banded, fine plate and ornate chain to this system)

    • No similar tailoring thread yet huh?

Looks like my 283 smithing will not suffice yet, will have to get some skillups right away since I have several people already looking for Elaborate armor.

REALLY glad I took advantage of the Shissar Scales route while I was able to, so luckily I am heading into the patch with a 300 unmodded skill and will be able to try the new combines straight away.

      • Bobaten has the general gist of it

All of the silk/hide/ore have at least a skillup use.

Only some of the spinneret/marrow/loam will have use at this point, but will in the future.

There are currently 11 tiers... there will be 13 when SoF comes out. 12 and 13 are over 300 skill though, so only useful for the cultural that is coming out with SoF.

        • Couple ?'s

With SoF and the new cultural....It will be totally compatible with the current bazu / last bloods to fit nicely into correct? Is there a sight somewhere that we can check a rough graph or designs of the upcoming new cultural gear, or is it just gonna be a surprise that comes with the expansion?

              Think you'll need excellent/superb hides/silk

Ores you'll need Tungsten and Cobalt; loam only soluble (the next level down has no use)

              • ok im now confused, which ones are for the "templates" and which are for the actual armor combine? i just want to skill up my last trophy(tailoring) and thought they were going to be pretty common drops for that part, but ive not seen much superb or excellent dropping.

                • All Ore, All Silk, All Hides make templates.

                  Templates are for skilling up.

Only 4 levels of Spinneret Fluid, Marrow, Loam are usable in any combine. These make the armor and will need the template of the appropriate level.

When the next expansion comes in November and the level cap goes up, 2 new levels of templates and armor will be released. (This is if I am reading it correctly). These will be above the top level and be 300+ trivials so are not really part of the skill up path.

The top levels are going to be rarer than the lower levels. Also, you need to check on the level of the mobs you are fighting as that determines what possible drops they can have.

                  • thank you, that explains alot. i had been fighting green/light blues while pl'ing my rogue, so i guess i need to go to higher level mobs to get the stuff to 300, i just hope it drops like the ones i have now are dropping.

                    • Using the chart someone linked earlier, I made my own list with trivials and which goes into Cultural armor.

                      http://ca.geocities.com/daeguardeq/NewCultural.html

I can't confirm absolutely everything, as i'm a woodelf and have no Silk cultural, but Everything else matches up with my cultural sewing kit, so I assume the rest is right as well.

This can help keep track of what ingredients goes with what trivials.

                      • Silk robes seem to be trivial 5 higher than the leather tunics.

Sell to the barters, people haven't removed them on some servers. And feel good knowing they probably are going to mark it up to a ridiculous price and have it sit there =P

So I'm a Dwarven smith 300 with the GM quest completed and the highest book I could buy was XI which apparently makes the elaborate level armor (previously known as GM level). Is the new higher Tier only going live with SoF release or did I miss it somewhere last night?
