Twist is correct in general I think it works for smithing. (10-11 combines)

I think I'll just quote this out of context occasionally.

But, yeah, I was speaking specifically about the Smithing trophy. Some are faster/slower, I believe (based on the difficulty of the skill/components.)

I thought it was stated some time ago that evolving a trophy from 6 to 7 was more based on the arbitrary decissions on the difficulty of obtaining components for combines, not sthe amount of difference between the trivial and 300.

ie. brewing/baking are easy to obtain, thus require many combines, while smithing/tailoring/fletching require many difficult to obtain components and will require fewer combines.

        Did I misread that?

Well...sorta. As I understand it, each trophy has a preset amount of experience needed to evolve it. Harder tradeskills require less experience, like you explain...

However, it's not based simply on the number of combines. Each SUCCESSFUL combine provides an amount of experience equal to the trivial of the item (or 11 times that amount if you are ahead of your trophy.) So, a trivial 386 item will provide more experience than a trivial 335 item. Also note that anything 350+ is considered to be 350 for this calculation...and that prior to 300, anything trivial over 100 points above your skill doesn't give any XP.

Assuming 1150 successes on MTPs for the baking trophy, for instance, it requires about 385,250 XP to level it from 6 to 7...so, if you did something trivial at 350+, it would only take around 1101 successes instead of 1150. If you did something trivial at 301, it would take around 1280 successes.

          At least...that's my understanding.

Which is why I specifically stated that it was for evolving trophies from level 6 to level 7. I did not mean to imply that it the arbitrary count applied to any lower level evolving to get to level 6 of the trophy.

Sorry...not meaning to argue. I just took your question (based on the below quote) to imply that you thought any non-trivial success within the same tradeskill counted the same for experience. While the difference isn't great between 335 and 350 trivials, it IS different. Apparently, I misunderstood (and am still misunderstanding) your question.

You got the basics right, just missed a detail. There is never an arbitrary count, it is always based on experience needed to evolve. However, while the amount of experience needed to evolve at levels 1-5 was calculated based on the expected number of combines needed to advance your skill to the next plateau, the amount of experience needed to evolve a level 6 trophy IS an arbitrary number based on how difficult finding materials to make 300+ trivial for that tradeskill. Since the amount of experience you receive for doing a successful combine is equal to to MIN[350, Item trivial] it does take about 15% more successful combines in the low 300's than those that are 350+.
