    A Bit Inaccurate

"The NPC won't convert the high level version of the material."

For every material, there are two NPCs for the quest. One who takes handins of dropped processed items, and one who gives out stuff for processing. One of them will take the low-quality version, and the other takes the high quality stuff. For jewelcrafting, for example, the female Elf takes raw pale nihilite and gives back pale nihilite, but won't take shimmering nihilite. However, turn around and hand that shimmering nihilite to the male jewelcrafting merchant, and he'll convert it. The same is true of tailoring (one of them takes etched scales, and the other aged etched scales) and ore (the male ogre converts aligned, and the female ogre converts shimmering ore). I assume it's the same for all of the other skills as well.

As of last night, I got 35 Pale Nihilite from refining 15 Raw Pale Nihilite. Therefore, I must have got returns of three.

A mod should lock a few of these threads and consolidate discussion.

        Silverfish,

Thanks for the correction and bah for the bad design by SoE :-P

They should make the handins give only one back on both or stop the handins on the higher level drops :-(

        Bah and bah.

        And humber thanks,

Concidering the low numbers of materials we are getting and the poor results the quests. I will encourage everyone I meet to not waste their time.

If you can't get better results than the free turn ins before 100 combines it is not worth it unless you have an entire guild feeding you supplies.

As one of the people complaining about the slow rate of advancement previously and wondering if the refinement experience was being reset, I must give a big thank you to AbsorEQ and any others at SOE that have been looking into this issue and involved in the fix.

My tinker had done roughly 250 conversions before the most recent patches and was still averaging under 2 dark matter per conversion and had never received 3 except during the bugged period. Since the last patch he has never received less than 2 per conversion and has gradually increased his average return from around 2.3 to 2.7 or 2.8 over the course of another 150 conversions.

My main character had done 100-150 each of nihilite and aligned ore conversions and was averaging 1.8 per conversion right after the patch and is up to 2.3 or 2.4 per conversion now with 250-300 total conversions performed.

This rate of improvement requires players to put considerable time and effort into exceeding the rate of return provide by the NPCs, but not so much as to make eliminate the incentive to learn the conversion recipes.

Based on my on-going experiment with raw pale nihilite it takes roughly 95 combines to switch to getting the "2-stack" result instead of the single result. I started receiving a third reult 62 combines later, though of course I may have had the "chance" to get the third result much sooner. I've done 173 combines altogether and my chance at the third result is growing slowly. The last 17 combines (since I got my first 3) yielded 4 extra results over the guaranteed 2 I get each time now.

Hope that helps folks narrow down what's needed as far as quantity to start seeing solid numbers above just turning in to the NPC's.

I can only assume at this point that it's the same or similiar for all trades, I'll be running tests with wheat and tea within the next few days.

My question for Absor or Maddoc is will we ever see a guaranteed 3 result, or will it only ever be a "chance" at 3?

So practicing on conversions with the lesser raw materials carries over to the greater ones? (ie: raw pale nihilite counts for raw shimmering ones, aligned ore counts for shimmering aligned ore, etc)

That has always been the intention afaik.

Pretty sure that's been stated several times by Maddoc and/or Absor as being the intent (I can't say whether it works that way or not, since I'm not processing the single shimmering ore I have until I know I have my best chance at getting 3 )

Sweet! I can stop handing them in now...I wasn't looking forward to blowing potential materials skilling up refining on shimmering/mountain stuff.

My results on Brewing (using Taelosian Tea only), all done after patch of July 14-16 (never did a single conversion before this patch):

                        Skill: 250
Quest type used: Brewing Freebie (420 hand-ins)

(Listing my skill and quest type used, just in case it matters after more data is collect.)

Conversion 1 to 80: in the "1 or 2" period, with 54 twos and 26 ones
Conversion 81 to 132: in the "2" period
Conversion 133: got my first "3"
Conversion 133 to 140: in the "2 or 3" period, with 3 threes and 5 twos

I've refined about 1.5 stacks of taelosian wheat, and I have never received more than one flour.

I accept that the RNG may be dangling me by the hair and laughing at me, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm doing something wrong... or if something is awry... anyone else had more than one flour return?

I know the flour is useless atm but it's the priciple of the thing

Yep, I have. I just did the quests and some conversions for alchemy, baking, brewing, fletching, pottery, and smithing since the last patch. I was getting at least a two here and there for all of them, although for some I've done only a handful of conversions.

Humm that seems to indicate that all conversions are on one counter (which is highly illogical, but nice) So far I have only done Nihilite refines and I am now getting 2 stacked. I guess that I should try some of the other refines (I have done all of the 7 core skill quests)

Umm. as far as i know, each tradeskil has its own counter. Doing Tea conversions will not affect your Ore conversions.

However within each tradeskill the basic (ie aligned ore) and the advanced (shimmering ore) do use the same counter. If you are on the 2 stage with the Aligned ore, you will get 2 back on the shimmering too.
