My personal opinion is that any recipe a person is likely to make successfully more than once should be on the CanLearn list.
I agree. I made a few EVBs yesterday, and they didn't get learned. I was hoping that I could use the new UI with them.

One other thing that I noticed, is that the "open with right click" does not apply to the forges. So I had to open the new UI, and then experiment because EVBs were not learned just so I could make them. I set the new UI to open with right click becuse I open the containers for inventory 10000 times more often than I open them for tradeskills.

I have yet to see a single compelling reason to mark any recipe "can't learn".

storage space and $$. they only have some much of the first without getting more of the second. quest combines that are lore and/or no drop shouldn't be added. how many times on the same character will you make snow griffon souflee or the 5th shawl combine successfully? its just not needed on some of them.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but I don't think that's the case here. Tanker (I think) was pretty explicit about how the system works; the Recipes table in the database had two new columns added, CanLearn and AutoLearn. Every single recipe must have a value in those fields, either true or false. So technically, it "costs" them nothing (in terms of storage space) to flag a recipe CanLearn; the flag exists anyway, even if it says "no."

Where it might cost them is in processing overhead (searching recipes takes processor time away from, say, combat) and in bandwidth, if they have to transmit more recipes for each search.

So while having unnecessary recipes flagged as CanLearn doesn't increase their storage costs, it does increase their total operating costs.

In addition, it takes time to go through the database and flip the flag on items. It sounds simple when we discuss it here, but realize that for every single recipe in the game, someone has to load the recipe, stare at it a second, decide whether it should be CanLearn, make the change (if needed), and save that change. This will take a LOT of man-hours. How much are the programmers paid by the hour again? That adds up; it's an up-front cost with no associated revenue. Hence, it's a low priority item.

As Maddoc says, they will eventually get around to tagging the recipes, but at the moment, I imagine they're kinda busy dealing with the mad lag apparently caused by the casinos; the graphical bugs that have started cropping up; mobs or events that are not "working as intended" in the new zones; zones (and servers running those zones!) that have crashed due to the sheer number of people trying to zone in at once; and so on. Flagging tradeskill recipes will undoubtly take a back seat for the next week or two.

Incidentally, from the Upcoming Updates page on the EQLive site:
          Upcoming March 2004
We are tentatively planning to roll out our next EQ update in early March 2004. Stay tuned for more details.

The existing PoP poisons which require a sketch are apparently not (yet) learnable,a lthoguh the rest appear to be autolearn.

Personally, I make a *lot* of sketch-using pop poisons, and I really really hope these get canLearn added to them

                5. All data about what recipes you "know" is stored on the server, as is the recipe data. You can't find it on your client side... it's not there.
i was thinking having to store the yes/no for each character on recipes. not sure how they do it but if every recipe gets a yes/no then the lv one bazaar mules surely don't need to make royal velium armor or ag combines can learn so they have to store a no. if its a string of recipes that they do know then its less space intensive but also takes some space.

                that was my thinking anyway.

I don't necessarily think that every recipe should show up, but once you figure a recipe out, there should be a way to add it to your favorites. And it baffles me how they could exclude an entire expansion (PoP) with regards to baking. I have not verified every PoP baking recipe as missing yet, but I have tried 5 or 6, and have yet to find anyone who has done one that learned.

So put me down for PoP combines. And yes, cultural should be on the list as well.

                    k. under general pop and cultural are already listed. looks like they did it chronologically with some big skillup recipes like sickles being sure to have. looks like they just ran out of time before it was all done.

OK... tidbit here... Opened my Glaze Mortar, (from my General Inventory) and got the old UI...I Tried with both the right click and the CTRL - Right Click. True, not many recipes use the Glaze Mortar... maybe it was just missed in the general upgrade.

I thought at first it was because I didn't have GoD active yet... but the Sewing Kit shows the new UI.

SOE did this to us by releasing the new tradeskill UI the same day as GoD goes live.

The new tradeskill UI is not part of the GoD expansion. It was made available to everyone. There are some containers that they apparantly missed. Be sure to /bug them or send /feedback so the developers can fix them.

                          reason for no recipes

Don't feel too left out, all those with cultural skills didn't get flagged either.

I was able to evaluate a large chunk of tradeskill products and assign "CanLearn" and "AutoLearn" flags to many of them. There are a bunch that have had flags added but weren't complete in time for data-lock for the Gates of Discord launch (shaman potions fall in this category). There are also some that I still have yet to evaluate (cultural falls into this category).

You can expect another large chunk of changes to be made in the next live update -- Keep your eyes peeled on test as well, since the changes will make it there first.

As always, feedback is good, keep it coming!
