Sorry...what I meant was the change from "not" to "now". Yes, it definitely was implied. I figured you had typo'd the "not", and I thought that would lead to confusion where people would think Loam was rarer than Silk/Pelts.

it's pretty arbitrary that we should be locked into a smithing route.

It's not really arbitrary.

And it's not just because of:

Tinkering very much has a bent towards metal and smithing

But rather, Tinkering for "Original Cultural" and "Blue Diamond Cultural" had only been producing items for plate/chain classes. So it is natural for the further development of the Tinkered cultural path beyond "Original" and "BD" to stay on the plate/chain side. I consider the addition of silk to DoN Tinkered cultural a bonus. It could have stayed as an alternative for cultural smithing all the way.
