Just to confirm I got my tinker from 285 to 300 last week mostly using Sacred symbols made with Rhenium Ore and Bonded Loam -- with a few skill-ups coming from making Intricate Metalofiber pieces from Fine Silk Templates and Fine Spinneret Fluid when I ran out of Loam. Trophy was only at about 72% when I hit 300, but was able to use other combines (Silver Conduit Cylinders and a full set of Elaborate Metalofiber) to level it to Master.

I have heard of more people just making templates for skilling up than making symbols based on the rarity/cost of the armor drops.

Correct though, if people just make symbols to get the skill up bonus, they will not be making any templates that tinkerers can purchase to use for tinkering.
When you get 290+, the basic chance to skill up with 415 key stat is about 1 in 30 (at 290) down to 1 in 38 (at 299) with the Templates, vs 1 in 12-13 for Sacred symbols (and 1 in 7-8 for Eminent symbols). That's why I'm doing sacred symbols to finish off Smithing on my main....

But when it costs 3-4 (Soluble Loam being close to 20x more) times as much for the loam/marrow/spinneret fluid than it does for the template components, it comes out to about the same cost. Also, I am finding it much easier to farm the template parts than the armor parts. Perhaps I am just on the greedy server and it has become accustomed to players having way too much platinum to know what to do with, but it seems that depends on what server you are on.

Has anyone run into the problem where they get one type of armor combine, but not any of the others?

My gnome is at 245 tinkering and has the Intricate metalofiber recipes available. However, I don't have the chain or plate versions available.

Am I missing a recipe book, or do I actually NEED to have some smithing skill to see the recipes? I assumed since the book discussed both Rhenium templates and fine silk, that it should provide both sets of recipes.

EDIT: I finally figured it out. Metalofiber combines will work in a collapsable toolbox. Autoactuated and the chain version require a deluxe toolbox.

There is a very easy solution if you don't want to bother a friend max skill in smithing or tailoring. Collect the template components that can be re-used for final armor combines, then advertise free-skill ups to anyone in the right skill range (i.e. combines not trivial but close enough for good success rate). The odds are you can even get them to cover part of the cost of template patterns, thread/coal, etc.

Now that we know the recipes for the seal combines, those are probably preferable to the armor (higher merchant material cost, but also decent merchant buyback).
