Block of high quality steel ??

Recently I just made my first aaaa. Did all the farming for parts and my ranger is a master artisen. My tinkerer is 294 and had 1 failure out of the 351 triv combines.

My question is that I had noticed something that seemed weird and perhaps I made more work for myself. There are 4 merchants that sell the ore small brick of refined ore. I believe that is the name that you combine with carbon and gnomish heater to make small bricks of steel then large to finally block. All the merchants have the 200 limit and I asked myself do the merchants sell the block of high quality and that they was out, or was it I had no competition for the refined ore.

After buying the 200 small brick of small brick of refined ore that allowed me to make roughly 30 blocks was there another way ? I wiped 3 merchants to get enough ore to make my 1 aaaa.

Did I miss something? a recipe? merchant was sold out?? Seemed excessive to get one block of steel...

Anyways, let me know if I'm overlooking something thanks...

Those merchants sell small bricks (200), large bricks (100) and blocks (50). There is no direct refine for the blocks, so you have to convert them to large bricks before refining, then combine them back to blocks afterwards. The cheapest way (with the fewest combines) to get Blocks of HQ steel is from the large bricks, the second cheapest is from blocks, and the most expensive way is from small bricks. Someone probably beat you to all the merchants and bought the cheaper (and easier) ones (I know I never bother with the small bricks).

I convert all my ore to large bricks of ore, then to large bricks of steel, then to blocks, then to whatever sheets I need. I usually strip the merchant in PoK and Qeynos and that covers things nicely. Best place imo to "restock" the merchants is Permafrost...slain everything until you collect 4 each of either large or small bricks of unrefined ore (I slaughtered everything from zone in to Vox and looted enough to refresh merchant 3 times). Bring those back to the merchant and get a small quest, he'll give you a container to combine them in. Do that and hand it back in. This will cause him to respawn with a fresh stock of refined ore.

The bazaar can be decent, since the merchant will be restocked anytime the bazaar crashes (less frequently these days, but still more often than Qeynos). I've only actually done the restock quest once, but I have enough bricks in bank to do it 3 times if I have to.

Kaladim merchant doesn't like me. Such long memories...jeeze, its been years since I killed the dorfs in Butcher, get over it...the guards are my allies, can't we be friends too?

Bazaar, POK, Qeynos, and Kaladim...

but yeah, you are not really missing anything. It takes a heck of a lot of the refined ore to make the steel for the AAAA. I keep a quest container filled to restock in my bank for when I make these.

Can you break up a large brick of unrefined ore and then use the small bricks to do the resuppley quest?

No, you can't break up a large into smalls for the task.

I found the Sol A drops far too many Fiery Ores for my liking. Perma had a much more favorable drop rate on what I wanted. A little easier to navigate too.

Appreciate the info, so the merchants were cleaned out then. I will do this quest and just stock up. Not being lazy, but as I saw it you couldn't refine large bricks. Was this from the gnomish heaters carbon??

These ores are quest pieces and can't be refined by players. They are combined in a container provided by the quest giver and the final result handed in to reset the merchant.

Don't mind the mob list, people just havent submitted every mob that dropped the stuff. I can tell you that the day I did this I cleared every goblin in Sol A and got 2 ores...killed almost every goblin in Perma and got 8. Maybe RNG, maybe not...I had same luck the second time I went to Perma for more.

Where I'm confused at is the combine you do buying large brick from vendor. Can you make these lg bricks of ore into steel? If so, now I know where all my time went combining small bricks which yes cost me a small fortune..
