Unlike "real" deathtouches, you can have a pet eat it as well I believe. With most deathtouches(fear minis) the mob will deathtouch the pet owner, but shei apparently just blasts the pet.

So if a pet dies instead of a player, does it still spawn an additional mob?

yes if a pet dies to shei a mob spawns (so if you see your local shaman using his doggie aa ability cringe in horror)

The second mob in the Cursed cycle in SSRA also DTs, but it's the huge damage DT, not the auto-splat one, so DA will block that as well.
