I'm having terrible luck getting saps. I'm a well geared druid, so I can solo fire pretty easily, but I've killed probably about 80 spiders now, 0 saps. Been auctioning in market channel for weeks for saps, no responce at any price. Saw some in baz for like 40k each, but I'm not going to pay that. On top of that I'm getting hosed on solstice robes, made 16 gem studded chains a couple nights ago, had about 80 combines ready to go...35 combines in they're all gone. This is at 214 friggin skill. If I start chain failing the robes after I finally get my saps it's not going to be pretty. I thought I was pretty hardened when it came to tradeskills, but between tailoring and farming saps I've about had it.

Has anyone tried this combine with a skill level less than 220. In other messages people have stated that you do not need PoFire access as you do not need to talk to the Gnome before you start. If you don't need to talk to the Gnome, we won't insult your skill level - so I guess I'm asking: is the recipie directly skill capped?

I can't imagine anybody wanting to attempt this less than 220 skill. The combine is difficult enough and the components are a rare drop. I myself have enough for 2 attempts but I'm goping to wait until I have a skill of 240 (252 with geerlok).

220 vs. 250
Just for comparison, the theoretical chance of success at 220 with +5% mod is 31.25%. The chance at 240+ skill with +5% mod is 52.25%.
Personally, I agree with previous posters that it's easier to farm saps for more attempts than it is to increase your skill.
The approximate cost to go from 220 to 250 using solstice robes is 120k. For 120k, you could buy enough saps for 2 more attempts (following your theoretical first attempt at 220), which theoretically would yield at least one success. In the meantime, you could be getting exp or farming saps instead of doing 740 solstice robe combines. Just at a guess, I'd say that 740 solstice robe combines would take you something like 14 hours of played time, and in 14 hours I bet you could get at least 1-2 saps for free via farming.

Ugh. I hate this garment. This tunic shall now be officially named the "Never to Be Sufficiently ****ed Firesilk Undergarment Tunic."
Yesterday I failed two final combines, on this, failed the brewing subcombine that ate 3 obsidianwood saps, then failed a third final combine. Which means, since I bought my saps in the bazaar, I just dropped almost 100Kpp and have nothing to show for it. That was a significant portion of my bankroll, and now I cannot try to garment again until I can get another source for the saps.
This is, of course, with a skill of 250. People who succeed this combine on their first attempt in their 220s and 230s need to come to unspeakably grisly ends.

Please do not buy the saps Amb. You can very easily get them yourself. A 65 ranger will have no problem soloing the spiders by ZI for the saps. It's good exp and good drops. The saps are rare but the camp is painless - it is really a good exp spot.
I think I averaged 1 sap per 2 hours or so. But like I said it was good exp and I got a lot of various types of diamonds.

I have worked this quest with a good friend of mine, who happens to be 1750, something I am still shooting for.....
I was 1 for 1 on the tunic @ 250 Raw. In fact, I succeded the 1 attempt on the Bow (although I did fail the stupid precombine of the string once). And have now completed my first earring. I have began #2 and have caught up to my friend, who is still stuck on the tunic.
She is 0/3 on the tunic combine, and has failed the sap combine once.
We are both incredibly broke as we have purchased all but 2 of the saps for our combined 5 shots at 2 tunics.
Honestly, I don't know if I will have it in me to try #2 after watching what she has went through on her first one.
