In response to the first post, I know exactly what you mean.
My first toon was a high elf cleric and I dreamt to make a suit of Koada Dal Mithril Plate one day. Needless to say, smithing was hard for a cleric (this is back when cleric cannot solo or farm anything). As better and better gears became cheaper and cheaper. That dream faded and reality sets in.
Since then, I have 2 other 65 toons (both with 8 shawls) and a ton of alts. They all do tradeskills. TS is part of a well rounded character. When you consider various quests, stat food, etc., TS has its place in the game. You are better off with it than without.
At its peak, tailoring is still a good money maker. In EP, it is quite necessary to do some of the TS quests. In and of itself, it is not obsolete although woodelf cultural is nothing more than twink toys nowadays (my woodelf druid bot is wearing a suit).
If you just want to make your own clothes, yeah, I'd say better move on to better gears. But if 250 by itself is a goal to you, keep hacking at it. If you want to do high end tailoring to make pp, keep hacking at it.
