  • Hollowshade War Etiquette?

I probably made a few mistakes.

I was trying to get wolves in south. But as it turned out, the wolf attack that came came when owls were down to south only. So, I burn the defenders all down, and nw wolves own entire zone.

I have uninteruptted wolf farming for a good long while. I take a sell break, come back, farm more. I was alone in Hollowshade when I come back from selling.

At some point, other people enter the zone, and kill the dog in the cat camp, causing war to reset. I figured that they were just looking fer drops, so I proceed to kill grimling chief to try and get mah dogs back. after the chief, bodyguards, and defenders are dead and owlbears are on the way, I ask the killers if it was worth killing the named and resetting the zone. they said they needed grimlings up, so I warned them they had less than 10 minutes to save their grimlings.

They complained that I had already begun shaping the war, and I said well, they didn't consult me before killing da boss dog. The grimlings died and they left-- I don't know if they even tried to save the grims.

But at any rate, I wonder what your thoughts are on all this. Is there any established etiquette for the war?

Ettiquette really exists differently on different servers and really is basically dependent on the parties involved. Generally, I go looking in Hollowshade. If no one’s around or the mobs I want are up, I’ll hunt until I determine that someone else is there hunting that can reasonably keep the entire set of islands clear. If I have been camping for awhile and someone shows up, I usually offer to split the areas, depending on what they say they can keep clear. I play a 65 mage so generally I just let the pet do the hunting for me, though I could kill faster if I wanted to, especially the owlbears.

Then again, sometimes you’ll run across people who won’t ask, and will claim that they changed the war so it’s their turn. The other week – after two weeks of waiting for the war to open up – I was farming the wolves, having about 200 owlbear substances in the bank. Two stacks of wolf substances later a 65 enchanter comes in and sets off the war. I just let the owlbears take over and proceeded to keep hunting, figuring I’ll need more of those anyways, might as well get them now. Two stacks of THOSE substances later, the enchanter comes up and tells me how they’ve been camping this spot for awhile now and that I should leave… I didn’t argue, I just left. No sense in arguing with someone who’s going to use lies right off the bat.

If I got to set etiquette, I wouldn’t change the war unless there was no one else in the zone when I started, or I had checked that no one was in the zone for the purpose of the war (why o why be there anyways?). If someone comes along, I share the area if they’re farming for substances as well. When people are rude and try to claim the war, I just leave and go do something else. I might be the one getting screwed a lot, but I haven’t ever regretted my actions towards another person.

I tend to be rather laid back when it comes to the war. I usually just kill dogs or bears, whichever is up, and collect whatever I can. The only time I try to change the war is when the grimlings are up. In your example I feel it’s the responsibility of the person entering the zone to shout out if he or she needs a specific mob to be up. Then its up to the people in the zone to work out an arrangement that will work for everyone. It’s not your responsibility to check the zone every five minutes and question the motives of all who enter.

I’m just thankful there are so many mobs and that they respawn so quickly. I can only kill the mobs one at a time with my spirit puppy. And it would be extremely frustrating to have characters running through the zone tagging everything in site into a huge train to be nuked if they were taking all the mobs in the area, especially when they are fully aware that others are trying to farm the same mobs. But so far even with two or three characters doing that I can still find mobs to kill. Well done Sony.

The only problem I’ve had there was one player who felt it was perfectly fine to come along and kill the mobs I had already started attacking. I think he just go too caught up in the excitement of tagging everything within reach and after a couple of tells finally stopped.

Because so many high level characters need to farm the mobs there, Hollowshade is the perfect setting for misunderstands. Hopefully most people understand this and will be both a bit more careful and a bit more understand. The fact that your concerned about your actions says to me that your doing your best to play nicely with others and that’s all any of us can do.

I also try to farm in off hours when there is no one there. Usually I can work a deal if theer is another person that shows up. If, in the rare case, someone who is less than friendly at my interests shows up and tries to take teh war control from me, as a bard, I have no problem keeping it under control.

I usually do the war with my paladin (54). He can control it fairly well (that is, he lets the North and East take care of themselves and controls the South). Often, I have been the only person in the zone and started the war the way I wanted it. Within a few minutes, some of the higher levels on the server come in and just start mowing through the mobs (AEing) or change the war altogether. Given that I am a lowly 54 paladin and I can keep no more than about 20 mobs down, I don't say anything. I can use more of either piece, really. Besides, I am just using it to get my blacksmithing up a few levels. If only I could get a puller to bring them to my wizzie...Anyone know and SK Blacksmiths on Stormhammer?

Just do me a favor, anybody who goes there to farm, check /who and if there's a low level vah shir in there, ask them what they're going after; usually it's just the no drop stuff anyways. It's a great way to make friends

I will in general do a / to see if any folks are in the zone. If I see a higher level character (40+) I will shoot them a tell and ask what they are hunting or if they are farming for Smithing, make a bit of small talk and then ask if they mind sharing the south spawn. I have never been told that the farming person will not share the spawn.

If there is someone else farming I will let them control the war and help them out (Heck they were there first) by killing the critters that are attacking if they want to keep one faction up.

Thats How I do it.... anyone else have other ideas?

I agree with most of what was said. My only bad experience there was about 2 months ago. I got there and another was sitting near the grim chief's hut. I asked him what he was looking for and he said he wanted either wolf or owlbears. So we worked together to get the war started and get owlbears to take over the island. No problem so far.

So he took southern most island and I took northern island and I started to AoE. I can take about 2 camps and AoE effectively. I am going about my business when this guy gives me a tell and says leave his mobs alone. I told him that I started the war and I am here to hunt them. He started to say some nasty things about me and I just put him on ignore.

Now, he never asked if we were hunting the mobs and just assumed that the mobs were spawned just for him. I can usually keep the norther islands cleared just in time for me to do the cycle again, if he wanted to share the mob, he could have asked. He just started to hunt where I was hunting and told me to leave.

Anyways, I think politeness gets you far if you want to hunt there.

My halfling rogue is level 51, and I MQ the rogue baking quest to help a friend with the Sonic weapons. At 51, a rogue can only fight one, and any aggro's that might happen by. So I never ever went into the Moor wanting to set off a war (game or personal). My rogue isn't interested in smithing.
My halfling druid has been there farming, but I have never started a war there with him either. I'll kill whatever I can get my hands on.

However, my Vah Shir Shaman is 21 and IS trying to get some of the rare grimling drops for the Sonic quest. It can be VERY frustrating to find that the Grimms are not up. I have all but given up. I will check it out some time later, maybe when he gets to 24 and some new spells.

Windru, why would you *POSSIBLY* want the Sonic Bane Weapons? Have you actually looked at the end result of the quest? You are looking at hours and hours of work for toys that wouldn't fetch 10 plat in the bazaar even if they WERE tradable... Those quests are a huge joke and, just an FYI, the continuation bits of the quest have been removed from the game.

Where did you hear that the continuation after the sonic banes was removed? And that alone is worth doing the sonic banes, or getting the mq.
Plus, some people just want to do them as personal goals *shrug* Kinda like epics...there's always something better these days.
It is hard to find the grims up though, nobody seems to like them

Windru have you ever OOC'ed asking if the person running the war would mind giving you a hand? I know if I saw someone trying to do a quest I would be willing to let the little guys stay up for a bit... Heck if I were doing the war and someone said looking for XXX from the Grimlings I would normally help them get it... Looking at those Yellow Owlbear eyes and the HUGE ears on the wolves gets tiring after a bit anyway.
