  • Freeport Cultural Smithing while KOS?

    Greetings, all.

I'm a paladin who's working on his epic, so I've killed Sir Lucan a few times. As a result, I'm now KOS to the Freeport Militia and the Freeport rogues. Problem is, I'm also a human smith, and I'd like to do Freeport cultural armor.

Have you ever been in this situation before? How did you handle it? What mobs (other than the Militia guards, obviously) near the Freeport Forge will aggro and attack? Do any of the guards wander close enough to the warrior's guild to aggro while you smith? Where did you buy your ore and supplies, and how did you get them to / from the forge?

Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

The Freeport Forge itself is out the back of the warrior guild - the warriors are, as you no doubt know, opposed to the militia, so you are safe while actually at the forge. Invis (from a potion or a friend) will suffice you get you to/from the forge; none of the militia guards (except perhaps in the militia house itself) see invis.

Probably your best rout would be to enter Freeport via the tunnel from WFP-NFP, gather up your ingredients from the bank in the safety of NFP, then you have a relatively short trip through WFP where invis is required.

My human paladin is also working on his smithing. Is the forge it possible to just fight your way there? Also, are the guards that guard the docks considered "newbie" guards (unkillable, for all intents and purposes) or are they normal guards? Kinda important for the fishing aspect.

The only 'newbie' guards are the ones at the gates. Although in EFP you can fish out of range of any guard, down the steps where the barbarian fisherman stands.

As for fighting to the Freeport forge, should be possible if you can kill the 'wandering' guards and don't get too close to the militia house! Probably would want to avoid the WFP-NFP zone nearest the WFP gate.

Yeech, being KOS to the Freeport Militia will be a real pain if you are seriously doing the Freeport cultural route. If you are doing any reasonably large run of combines you will find yourself needing to head to East Freeport to sell and buy more of those unstackable plate molds, maybe more than once. It's not an insurmountable problem but makes things more difficult, if only in the amount of plat you will need to spend on potions/items etc.

One option, albeit a time consuming one, is to turn in gnoll and orc scalps to the guard captains in Highhold Pass. There is a positive faction hit to the Freeport Militia but no negative one to North Freeport factions. The problem is getting the scalps in sufficient quantity, as they do not drop every time, the mobs are often camped and I don't think the faction hit is very big for every scalp turned in.

Orc Scalps drop commonly in Crushbone now. I can see it now...a level 65 paladin (54 in my case) running around Crushbone killing all the orcs. Hey, at least my twinkie shaman will be able to benefit from the shoulderpads and belts. /chuckle

Could be worse. I was KOS to the -Steel Warriors- when I found I needed to smith field plate. Try being attacked by a few guild GM's when you're combining some gorgets.

For those of us with that problem, you likely can hand a whole bucket or two of milk to Mojax Hispin out in the Commonlands, near Kithicor. It'll start a scripted event. Ignore it.

Just be careful-this will damage Militia faction and you can find yourself dubious or worse in short order. Do a stack or two of milk, then check the tollbooth guards-and stop if they go apprehensive. Dubious or worse is tough to recover from if you want Militia faction for things like the LoY seals quest.

I am now dubious Steel Warriors/apprehensive Militia as a result of slightly overdoing it with the milk.

A well role-played Paladin should be KoS to Freeport Militia! They are scum, and deserve what they get when they attack good Paladins.

Unfortunately, I believe only the scalps from the Shralok orcs and Mucktail gnolls in HHP (and possibly EK) are accepted (if I am wrong someone please correct!)

As a cleric of Mithaniel Marr I couldn't agree more. But it sure is nice to be able to have unimpeded access to that forge....

What fishing aspect? There is nothing in human smithing that you can fish for from the freeport dock area.

Correcting you. The scalps from Crushbone, as well as the ones from Gfay work. Just the "orc scalp" though. Orc pawn scalp never has, and still doesn't work.
I have personally tested and verified that this works.

Of course they nerfed orc scalps so merchants won't buy them anymore. Guess that was just too easy. Go to the merchant at orc lift, buy 800 scalps, and go max your faction

                    But anyway, it does work.

The other option for smithing in freeport is pick up a larrikan's mask. It has 10 charges of invis, usually pretty cheap to get. That should get you in, and thru a decent run of smithing in freeport (or pay a low level to invis you so you can get to forge, and hire them to haul your molds.

Most paladin race/diety combos start at dubious with the Militia.

Also, are the guards that guard the docks considered "newbie" guards (unkillable, for all intents and purposes) or are they normal guards? Kinda important for the fishing aspect.
I don't know about the guards at the gates, but the one that wanders onto the docks is "killable". Warning though - the lady on the end of the boat dock is on Militia faction, and it seems if she gets aggro'd she manages to summon other guards (or maybe I just have really BAD luck :P ).

One option, albeit a time consuming one, is to turn in gnoll and orc scalps to the guard captains in Highhold Pass. There is a positive faction hit to the Freeport Militia but no negative one to North Freeport factions.
There is also the Inert Potion quest in erudin. Raises a number of odd factions, in cluding FreeportMilitia and CoalitionofTradeFolkIll (which is also tanked by the Lucan kills and subsequent testimony turn in, and is the FP rogue faction), and hurts none. Small faction hits, but easy. Its just running a vial between floor 3 and floor 1 of the Erudin Tower ... there are writeups on Allakhazam's and Paladins of Norrath, and elsewhere.

                      --

Also, have you tried pacifying your way into the gates? Assuming you're high enough level and the guards aren't flagged immune, could save you a lot of plat from invis potions.

                      --

Giving up Freeport was hard as a tradeskiller. Pre-Sol it was a great place for a lot of tradeskills. I can't imagine actually having to do cultural smithing there Annoying enough trying to use the boat ...

                      Best of luck, fellow Paladin

I'd just like to mention that I thought this would be a vialbe option vs. Shadowscream. So here is what I did. This is all approximate except for the number of combines.

I had a fishing of 156 to start and a smithing of 195. I'm a level 65 magician with a 280 Int, 125 Str unbuffed. I nabbed 500p from my bank and started buying/pharming Sea foams from both the people killing sea furies and the seafuries themselves. While my pet was killing seafuries or I fished for seaweed. After about 8 hours total I was ready for 47 attempts which I felt was decent considering that included in that time was making tempers, jointing...etc.

In order to maximize my attempts I bought plains pebbles in the bazaar at about 10p avg and had a druid imbue them. Figuring that a 10p plains pebble is cheaper than another block of HQ ore since regular field plate requiring One folded sheet is trivial at 195 and imbued trivials out at a much higher rate.

In 47 combines I had Zero skill ups, I was KEI'd and Shammy buffed to the nuts...my own str gear + KEI put me at 280 INT and 204 Str. I had 5 failures making masks and sold the 42 other masks back to a vendor in PoK for 38.5p each.

Maybe I just had remarkably horrid luck but I don't think I will be attempting this as an option for skill ups. Any other info would be appreciated.

I turned in Orc Scalps from CB to the Captain in HHP and they worked very well. =D

D'oh! It never even crossed my mind that the orc scalps the Crushbone family was dropping could be the same as the ones the Highkeep orcs dropped. I tossed all the orc scalps I'd found in my rampage of Crushbone. What a missed opportuunity.
