  • Human Smith needs Advice

Hello all. I am a human smith. My skill is currently 191 without geerlok and my smithing wis/str is 209/190. I really want to skill up high enough to make some heraldic. I am not too concerned with religion specific, just the plane stuff. Does anyone have any advice on what I should be using for skill ups? Currently, I have been farming sea weed and sea foam; making field plate. My skill up rate is costing me about 2k per skill up (costs of buying temper material, leather padding, and hq ore). I don't know if I should be using something else for skilling up. Sea temper isn't too hard to make and get ahold of, and HQ blocks of ore is rather easy. Money is not too much of an issue, as I have my chanter sitting in nexus casting kei for donations to fund my smithing.

Thank you for all your advice
    Tenniel

Human cultural is the easiest way to skill up over 188, assuming you are on a budget. It can be slow at times as you will need alot of sea foam, and you will need some plat unless you have time to farm the padding and high quality blocks of ore.

In your case, you may be able to do mistletoe cutting sickles, which are very expensive but the components are available at various vendors; posts in other threads in this forum estimate the total cost of doing sickles alone from 188 to 250 to be around 500k, conservatively.

With a KEIing chanter, you might be able to go both routes....

      What class is your smith?

At any rate, I would recommend putting some of that plat you are making into acquiring some Wis- or Str gear, purely for the purpose of smithing. Don't care about mana, HPs, or whatmore, just go for highest Wis or Str (whichever is easier to raise for your class). To max out either of those will make a difference - especially in the time investment needed.

Also, if you are somewhat concerned about money anyway, try and get some CHA gear as well, to get at least 110+ Cha for selling products and buying supplies.

Work on the 1-sheet items first as much as you can; that should get you to 222 skill at least. For exact trivial levels, look at the main site. Also, when you finally do start working on Heraldic armor, get a Geerlok. When making that armor, you should maximise your success rate, skillup rate is secondary then.

Just FYI, I've started making Heraldic ever as low as 207 skill, though my success rate was only between 10-20%. If money is no concern for you, however, this should not matter much.

The plain (fine) heraldic and the diety specific stuff both trivials the same, so that's not really a consideration.

I would say that if you have some cash to play with, then field plate is the best route hands down.

Keep on going the way you are. Human Gm smithing is not as difficult as other races, especially now that seaweeds are no longer No Drop, and stack. If you can solo seafuries, gather seafoam while you're there. Field Plate/Imbued Field plate can take you into the 240s. I started making heraldic (fine and imbued) at 236, and have about a 30% success rate on bad days.

Or even consider doing Shadowscream, its actually not that hard. And has next to zero cost.

              Current progress april 15th

              current skill - 192
buffed wis - 230 including kei and qeynos afternoon tea
Current Skilling Item - Field Plate Bracers (triv 195)
              Current Costs -
              padding 30pp each
              mold - 7pp
              sea temper - 60pp (foam 10pp - sea weed 50pp)
              Block of MQ ore 52pp
              chain joining 2pp
              total per combine / stack = 151pp / 3020pp
              success rate = 95%
              current vendor sell back each / stack = 39pp / 741pp

Ouch, this is costing way too much cash, i am losing 2279pp per 20 combines. But yet, i am currently combining 2 stacks per day. I am skilling up at 1 skill up point per 2 stacks. Is this really normal? Should i be making a higher trivial item? or does that not matter as long as item i am currently making is not trivial yet?

Thank you all so much for your great advice =)

God 30pp for padding and 50pp for seaweed....

Go to Marus Seru and farm Greyhoppers for LQ Hopperhides to make your own paddings.

Then go to OOT and practice fishing and get your saltwater seaweed there.

That will save you 80pp a combine right there. Saving you 1600pp a stack.

Wow, 50pp per Seaweed?? I would say, grab a Fishing Pole and sit around fishing for an hour or two ... that should net you a lot of Seaweeds (and for nearly free - the only cost here is the Fishing Poles and the Baits).

30pp per Padding is also a bit high, if you'd ask me, but it may depend on your server. I usually spend no more than about 10pp per Padding, making them from the base materials if I have to, by buying Silks and Pelts in the Bazaar at respectively 2-3pp and 5pp each.

There are two choices to post-188 smithing: buttloads of cash or interminable farming -- or some combination of the two.

You're lucky in that human cultural is the easiest and best of all cultural armor to get ingredients for. I have an up-and-coming human bard I plan to make a smith and the one reason I made her a human was for the cultural options.

First, farm your own padding. Go to Innothule and kill spiderlings around the newbie area -- you'll get stacks of spiderling silk in no time. Get a port to Stonebrunt, install yourself there for a few days and kill cats (tigers and leopards, not the upright ones) till you have stacks of low, medium, and high quality cat pelts -- or go to Marus Seru and kill every hopper that moves for LQ rockhopper pelts. There is no excuse for paying 30pp each for leather padding except laziness.

Second, as was mentioned before, take the boat out to OOT with a bag full of Catch-A-Lot fishing bait and a few fishing poles (or better yet, do the Fisherman's Companion quest so you can summon your own poles on demand). Kill seafuries and fish for seaweed. Do it a lot until you stockpile a lot of sea foam and seaweed. If you get the Gornit camp you can even kill him for good plat, which will finance further smithing ventures.

The farming to keep your costs down for human cultural is NOTHING compared to the tedious farming you need to do for shadowscream (major yuck).

What I would do is sit on the dock in OOT and auction 10plat each for sea foam, occasionally mining the vendors. There is a merchant right at the dock that sells fishing poles and bait. Make sure your bags are empty before going there, fill up with seaweed and foam and you are set.

Marus Seru also works very well. Or, if you want to speed things up without such a high cost per padding....buy the silks and pelts and make your own padding.

As mentioned above, you would be well advised to max out your Wisdom if you can. Buy some wis gear in Bazaar as inexpensively as you can and keep it exclusively for tradeskilling. If you don't already have some Misty Thicket Picnics you should get at least one of them.

If maxxed Wisdom gets you even one more skill up than you might otherwise get, it's worth it.

For bonus points, you might consider getting a friend to imbue a nice, cheap gem and go with imbued gorgets instead.

Trivials at 219 and you'll save on the expensive molds.

                              April 21 update

Well, i took a little break but i am back in it. I am getting kinda mad because all the vendors ran out of HQ Blocks and lrg bricks of ore.. thanks to me, hehe. I need to find a place to loot unrifined ore. Got any ideas? Well, i combined 35 times today.. and went from 197 to 201 =) Oh yeah... feel soooo good to be over 200 =)

For any human smith reading this.. Field Plate is the for sure way to go after banded.
