SS is now unbalanced. I agree that No Rent was a pain, stupid, and uncalled for, but difficulty of this item is not matched by the value of the product. It trivs higher than most cultural items, yet is worth less almost across the board. I would not be surprised if a future patch lowers the triv on SS.
However, until then, I imagine shadow island in Twilight Sea is going to get very crowded, as is the hill in Shadeweavers. And say "buh by" to all owlbears and sonic dire wolves.Alerithon, Husband of Emmoney.

Lord, some of you whine if they don't fix SS and some of you whine if they do. This is a much needed FIX, I really don't see farmers moving in on TS island or the Shadeweavers shadows. You people crying unbalanced do realize the drop rates of the shadows don't you? I farmed 2600 shadows in my progression of smithing, my average time to fill ONE backpack was 6+hours, that was with my Ranger tracking the entire island and killing shadows right after they spawned.
Nobody is going to be stupid enough (well very few people) to sit in TS farming shadows when there are much much easier and less deadly things in the game to camp / sell.(150hp procing lifetaps hurt) You are all blowing this way out of proportion. Take this change for what it is, a MUCH needed fix to a problem that has been going on forever. You don't HAVE to do Shadow Scream you know.

Since you used to be able to corpse the shadows, removing the no rent tag just made it a little easier to hunt and store them. I still think that the no drop aspect of the substances will provide a sufficient deterrant/time sink to people that want to cheaply and quickly GM smithing.
I am happy for this change.Doranor Singebeard

I always considered storing swirling shadows (or anything else for that matter) on a corpse an exploit. I'm glad that the change makes it so that you don't have to be a cheater to keep your shadows when you log. I would have greatly appreciated this when I was doing Shadowscream Steel.

I never honestly understood the complaint about the no rent. Was is a pain in the rear end? Yes. But it wasn't overly inconvenient to lock them on a corpse. In my experience farming for shadowscream Wailing Substance is by far the most difficult component to get. Mostly beacuse there is some moron on Terris Thule who INSISTS on helping the Grimlings to take over both the Owlbears and Sonic Wolves so that he can farm some crap that he sells for a few plat. Three or four times a week I have to petition to have the zone reset then wait the 4 or 5 hours until a GM finally get to it. Then another hour or two to get the owlbears or sonics in the correct place. Only to return the next day to find that Moron_001 has petitioned to have the zone reset and then helped the **** Grimlings yet again. Maybe its just me but SIX owlbears outside of the southern HSM islands is NOT enough mobs dropping something that is as desirable as wailing substance. Hell I can always go kill sonics in TM if I can't get them in HSM but trying to farm wailing substance from the six owlbears in paludal is NOT my idea of fun. (nor is farming an endless string of mobs that have been green for 35 levels for that matter). When SOE finally makes wailing substances more readily available I will thank them. Dropping the NO RENT tag off of swirling shadows will do VERY VERY little to help me move closer to my goal of becoming a grandmaster blacksmith. But every little thing they do to "help" is greatly appreciated.Koner Swiftjustice

What really pisses me off is these whiners who complain when they fix something for the benefit of those that don't want to spend two solid months farming at night then doing combines little by little until 3 am each morning. Boo hoo, you worked so hard levelling up your skill now others shouldnt have the easy way out.
Big Deal, they had it easy before with Fine Steel. Now at least they modified it so you have to farm still to skill up. There are a lot of smiths out there with 2 to three bags full of no drop components who cant sink 6 hours into farming no rent materials each day and trying to store them on a corpse.
What was the purpose of them being no rent in the first place. They are the only skills item that I know that is no rent in the entire game. The only thing I can think of is that they were intended to be a logjam to levelling up smithing. I'll bet that there is probably about 1 smith per server who has levelled up from fine steel to 250 using shadow scream. Thats a little low if you ask me.
Its not as easy to corpse the shadows as some people suggest. Sometimes there are patches and they poof, sometimes people don't get around to using them every 2 or 3 days. And quite frankly that shouldn't have to be a means being used to level up a skill.
I am one of those people who have moved from 189 to 200 plus using cultural and I can tell you its a big pain in the ass. Getting an enchie to spend 5 hours so you can make a stack of breastplates and hope for one skillup point is kind of senseless. To finally have a normal means of levelling up is what we have needed since last June.
Also, its not going to be automatic to skill up. you will still have to sink some time and money into smithing to get it topped out now.

I'm glad they made them NO RENT. I just hope that I can go hunt them and not have to contend with a farmer who is only there to sell them in the bazaar for ridiculous prices. On the other hand maybe we can vendor mine for them now as they drop pretty well in ME too.
All in All its a good ting.Sethlic

I don't recall exactly which thread the following comment can be found in but one poster asked the Devs why Swirling Shadows were no rent. The alleged response was "Swirling Shadows are no rent?"
The whole thing may have simply been a flagging error, mis-communication, or what have you and they just know were able to track down ALL of the relevent code and fix it without breaking something. Of course we all now that taking the no rent tag off of shadows will somehow break bards

Personally, I don't think making SS not no rent fixes anything. Sure, you have the option to do skill runs however many you feel like at a time, but who cares. I mean I guess you do obviously, but given the choice between having a steady source of time restricted combines (fix HSM drops, leave shadows no rent) versus being bottlenecked on components but able to combine whenever (make SS tradable), I'll take more chances to skill up please with fewer retarded zone wars.Originally posted by BumblerootWhat really pisses me off is these whiners who complain when they fix something for the benefit of those that don't want to spend two solid months farming at night then doing combines little by little until 3 am each morning.
