    Just a thought...

But did you see the sticky thread titled "FAQ: Smithing" in this part of the forum?

Because if you didn't, then the FAQ's useless. Which is a shame, considering how many questions it answers--including the Dalnir one, as Sinnuyanea pointed out--and it would mean that someone will need to think of a title that WILL make it stick out.

If you DID see the thread however, that brings up a new problem:

How to educate the random person on using CTRL+F.

Because doing that in the FAQ thread using "Dalnir" and "always works" both got me this:
Q: I've heard about this "Always works" or "never fail" forge or somethingorother in Dalnir's. Can I go there to smith?
A: No. This is a quest-only forge, and normal smithing recipes do not work in it.

it's sad seeing people that are, in essence, trying to justify rudeness. If you're the helpful sort who enjoys rendering assistance to your fellow player and potential tradeskiller, you could answer him and point him to the FAQ. If not the helpful sort... why not just ignore the question? The relative anonymity of the internet does not change the fact there was another person on the other end of that post. Either answer or don't, but why not just keep the beratings to yourself.

My point wasn't to suggest that responses in this forum are not sometimes rude. My point was that it is rude to not utilize rescources that people have worked extremely hard to make available for that purpose. I realize that unless someone has been here for an extremely long time, they do not know all the "frequently asked questions" by heart, and heck even then they probably don't, but that is why the post is stickied at the top, and why the instructions in the rules say to check the faq first before asking a question.

While I am not trying to justify anyones "rude" responses, and I am not trying to suggest this is true of this post or every "question" post, but I personally find it extremely rude to see many people who obviously came to the board, didn't check the website, didn't read the rules for posting, didn't check the faq, and still expect everyone to hand feed them the answer within the next 15 minutes. It happens all the time, and yes some people get snippy when it does. All I am saying, is don't jump down their throats about it. Generally they were the ones that did all the work to provide the information in the first place.

Actaully you are trying to justify rude responses. I personally find most of that sort of thing inexcusable (not the justification). I've read the faq, I know the answer to the question, but I'll either answer it simply or ignore it. Singling out stupid questions for rude responses is... rude.

No I am not, it's really simple.

Asking a question without at first at least trying to find the answer yourself is rude.

Giving someone a rude response for asking a "dumb" question is rude.

And getting snippy at someones curt reply is rude.

I am trying to point out that the "you don't have to be a rude @$$" posts that always follow a short reply are just as rude as the sarcastic reply was. I am not claiming anyone is right in this situation, or for that matter any less wrong than anyone else(therefore I am not justifying anything). I agree on your "answer or ignore" policy for when I post. But that certainly doesn't make any other policy "wrong" just because I, you, or anyone else thinks it is. Especially when the reply did answer the question.

Have you ever been standing in front of someplace like city hall and had someone come up and ask you, "Pardon me, do you know where city hall is?" I have. I've done it myself in fact. The polite response is, "Oh its right here." Not "What?!? Can't you look around and see for yourself?!?"

Personally I prefer to start off polite and work my way up to rude rather than starting there at the begining.

And to equate that to these boards, after the 100th person comes up to you and asks where is the City Hall..... you are not a little bit testy by then, or you just ignore them (now thats rude) ...

Imho ArrakeenNaedShoj nailed it with his last post. There was nothing rude about the original responses at all, slightly sarcastic but thats about it.

I can't help but feel that all this discussion is only hurting the original poster

I keep asking myself why I keep coming back to this thread even though I know there won't be any useful smithing discussion..

I answer such queries thus: Must be the same reason my wife and I watch "reality" TV programs.. whatever that reason is.. something along the lines of morbid curiousity

Good grief. This is another dead horse and another place where people will have to agree to disagree.

Locking this for now. I'll leave it up to the DenMum and House Ogre to come back and comment if they wish.
