  • Cedir's (almost) Complete Guide to LDoN Smithing (spoiler, duh)

The only components of LDoN smithing that can't be bought at vendors are the theme temper components. Each theme has a drop (rare to common, depending on the theme) which makes a temper when combined with a Water Flask in a brew barrell. The Brewing trivial is under 165. The components and the results are all dropable.

From Deepest Guk: Pondweed makes Swamp Temper
From Takish Mines: Goblin Bones makes Bone Temper
From Rujikan Hills: Sand Verdena makes Sand Temper
From Mistmoore Catacombs: Gargoyle Granite makes Granite Temper
From Miragul's Menagerie: Ice Lichen makes XXX Temper

I have not found any Ice Lichen, or met anybody who has found it, so...

Gargoyle Granite also seems kind of rare. Goblin Bones, on the other hand, appears to be a pretty common drop.

    PLATE

To make LDoN plate armor, combine a Water Flask, a Superb Leather Padding, the apropriate plate armor mold, the temper of your choice, and the apropriate number of Medium Quality Folded Sheet of Metal in a forge with your Smithy Hammer.

Bracers, Collars, and Visors take one sheet. Vambraces, Pauldrons, Girths, Boots, Cloaks, Gauntlets, and Helmets take two sheets. Breastplates and Greaves take three sheets.

All the plate combines appear to trivial over 186.

    CHAIN

To make LDoN chain armor, combine a Water Flask, the apropriate chain armor mold, the temper of your choice, and the apropriate number of High Quality Metal Rings in a forge with your Smithy Hammer.

Bracelets, Gorgets, and Veils take one ring. Sleeves, Mantles, Skirts, Boots, Cloaks, Gloves, and Coifs take two rings. Tunics and Leggings take three rings.

All the chain combines appear to trivial below 185.

The new armor is size-based. I only used regular sized molds and patterns in my testing. My assumption is that SMALL and LARGE armor will have the same stats, and just weigh less or more, respectively. It could be a bad assumption...

As you can see, the Gothic doesn't follow the same pattern as the other three, so I was not able to extrapolate the stats on the other pieces. The Gargoyle Granite seems a bit rare.

I haven't seen any Ice Lichen, so I haven't been able to make any armor.

When I learn more, or if somebody posts corrections, I will edit my original posts.

So, you can see now what I was excited about: This is a new 180+ skill up path. And you wont have to compete with power farmers for the drops, because they drop in instanced dungeons.

Superb is expensive, but it's cheaper than buying regular padding in the Bazaar, and farming padding is annoying.

I am okay with Superb =).

The pieces also seem to sell back for around cost.

        Did I miss anything?

I've only been able to make one piece of Gothic so far, but it will probably be a full set of STR, STA, and SvM. Would be GREAT for twinking young warriors.

The Sandblasted also looks good for young clerics.

My guess is that the Ice Lichen will have SvC and INT, and possibly also CHA. That would complete the saves/stats.

Also, note that each piece has two slots, and some pieces have slot type 2. Almost every item in the game (every item all my characters were wearing) was given one slot of type 1 by default... so the fact that these items can hold two augments is good.

The minor stat augments drop pretty frequently. Got three just now in a single crawl. At first glance, this looks like just a skillup path... but I really think it would make good mid-level armor if mixed up/augmented properly.

Another note: I didn't fail once on any of the smithing combines. Hopefully they didn't mess up and make this stuff no fail. If they did, the obvious solution would be to make it *not* no fail, but SOE would probably go with the non-obvious solution and nerf the trivial instead. Originally, I thought they may have turned off failures on Beta for testing purposes... but then I failed twice on the temper combines. What does this mean...?

I haven't done enough combines to say conclusively. Once we learn the trivials, it will be more clear.

For example, is the trivial on the plate gradual, like ornate chain and fine steel, or did they just pick one or two trivial points for everything (like shadowscream). It seems like, based on info from this board, if the trivial path is gradual, we will see better skillups than shadowscream.

I got 2 skillups from the 13 non-trivial combines. I'm lucky to get 1 skillup on 40 combines of shadowscream. But these numbers are too small to tell whether it was just luck.

The main difference, to me: Shadowscream = boring green camp. LDoN smithing = super fun dungeon crawls.

Also, when somebody sells the components off to a vendor, they each (or at least three of them) sell back for around 10 plat.

              Two more notes:

              (1) The recipe book says "Goblin Bone"... the actual item in game is called "Goblin Bones" (plural)

              (2) The recipe book doesn't give any info on Helms or Coifs, but they were pretty easy to figure out

                    It's 20pp for me with 116CHA.

Maybe they lowered the price on test.

Just checked what the deal was with the leather padding:

on live servers superb leather padding cost: 83pp 9g 9s 9c

                      on beta server it cost: 25pp 1g 9s 9c

So something like 70pp per combine I think for the stuff with 1 sheet. Anyone have any figures exactly what it sells to vendors for?

Edit: looked at the wrong molds, so around 50pp not 70.

I don't know how you are getting that number. You need to get your CHA over 104.

The superb padding on beta is 20p. A mq sheet of folded cost 20p to make, on live *and* beta. That's 40p, not 80.

The one sheet items sell back for about 40p. The two sheet items sell back for about 60p. The three sheet items sell back for about 80p.

As I said in my original post, they sell back for about cost.

Edit: Okay, so this doesn't include the cost of the mold... but, still, it's basically the same cost/sell back ratio as Fine Steel.

                          Great work!

I am assuming these use the molds needed for Fine Plate armor, and not the Full Plate molds that are for sale by the guy who sells Superb Leatehr Padding. Is this correct? Either way, the cost of the mold is pretty significant. 5pp to 18pp is a bigger loss than when making Fine Plate provided that you made your own leather padding. If you are buying you leather paddings at today's bazaar rates then the new stuff gives a better resell rate.

Well, even if it does cost more to produce than traditional fine plate, I'm very excited to see something that may have trivials enough above 188 to provide another viable skilling path above that awful number (I know, above 186 may still mean it trivials at 188, but traditionally plate armors have had scaling trivials, so bracers trivial before, sleeves, which trivial before BPs, etc). I plan to start hitting those dungeons mentioned as soon as I can to try to get temper ingredients. My smithing has been suck at 196 for eons and so I will be eager to help test out the trivials.

Something that would not involve the interminable farming of shadowscream (one farmed instead of three) or the monstrous expense of mistletoe will be welcome. Unless the drop ingredients rival the rarity of windstones, this could be a very nice addition to the smithing progressions.

What zones are these particular dungeons located off or near?

Hmm, I see Edition 5 of the Economical Smith in my near future...

Yea sorry looked at the full plate molds when comming up with the 70pp esitmate. So more like 50pp. And if they sell back for 40 thats basically nothing.

The superb leather padding price I listed above is however the correct one as of this very moment on the beta server with 143cha.

This seems indeed to be the new way to go for skillups =)
