when i first started doing systematic research for the 61+ spells i thought "sheesh this is confusing and a lot of subcombines!" and i have a bank over-filled with bags of different inks, parchment solutions, quills, thickners, parchments etc. If you keep everything on-hand then it doesnt really take up less space than using words and pages... its still a lot of crap. But keeping bags of it is a lot easier than making 1 ink, quill, parchment etc at a time every time you want to make a spell.

After spending a couple weeks with it and memorizing along the way which parchments were used for which level spell, after getting recipes for quills and inks on my spell kit recipe list, i realized that the new system is actually more "systematic". Who'd of thunk it, right?

It does take a while to get used to i think, and im still getting used to the parch names for the sub-61 spells (and the papyrus for lvl 60 spells STILL doesnt seem to be dropping on The Combine), but really it makes a lot of sense once you get the hang of it and its so much easier than farming words.

It's pretty easy to guess how to make a spell with the info provided in the books in-game. I had a necro ask me for the lvl 59 pet and i didnt see the spell on eqtraders so i guessed and was able to figure it out (after she handed me the words to make it and i had to break it to her that the 300p she just spent in baz on words was worth nada ) Since the lvl 61+ spells ARE on eqtraders and the new system follows a logical pattern for inks, quills, thickners, its pretty easy to deduce what mats will produce a desired result.

Not dropping on any server :/ I found a bug! So combine is not being picked on, it is not dropping anywhere. (if it is dropping on other server it is because of a second bug... that bug should also prevent it from dropping... but that second bug could act weird)

This is great news actually lol. I was afraid that it was just really, really rare (as people in the normal EQ tradeskill forums were saying) and i was gonna have to be sad. But if its temporarily broken that just means i have to be patient. I can do that!

I just wish the items has a rec level field on them.

To be honest.. it SHOULD be extremely complicated..

              Why?

              "Research"

I think that speaks for itself.

                  Not Complicated, sometimes tedious

First off, it sounds like the original poster is mainly frustrated to know what drops to find to get spells made. For folks who just need to get a spell made:

Get the right paper for the spell level and give your researcher some cash for the rest. ALL the other parts can be bought from vendors.

I take a completely different approach. My researcher is also a tinker, and tinkering takes FAR more bank space than research, so I have to be careful.

All of my spell research components would fit easily in 8 bags. I only store:
                  15 different thickeners
                  7 different raw hides
saltpeter (which is optional, but I'm cheap.)
                  crystallized sulfur (also optional)
                  6 different dirty parchments
                  5 different dirty vellum
                  4 different dirty papyrus
                  7 different dirty spell scrolls
6 inks (eagle, pain, tunare, tribunal, zek, alacrity)
                  1 stack of A quill

That's fewer than 60 stacks and it's all I keep permanently. When I'm going to do research, I figure out what papers I expect to clean and run them through my spreadsheet, so I know what to buy at the JC vendors in PoK. Then I gate to the vendor in Corathus. There I can pick up anything else I need quickly.

I actually use a bit more storage than that for research, but not much. For one thing, I make mechanoinstructions, and the raw parts don't even stack. For another, I occasionally pack away some random parts that I'll use later...

I sometimes end up with stacks of both clean and dirty parchments, but I work very hard to avoid that. And, I've started keeping a couple herbs on hand because I have to run to Abysmal Sea to get them. (Sea Spirit and Vetiver Root) I save gems which A) I know I'll use in research B) dropped from mobs and C) cost at least 50pp.

And then there's random inks. I will actually sell back inks that I'm not using immediately if they aren't in the half-dozen.

I tried combining Celestial Solvent, a Raw Rough Hide, Rough Hide Solution and a Skinning Knife. But the result was such an oxymoron, it opened a rift into another universe. I fell through into one of Nodyin's spreadsheets and was slain by a misplaced decimal.

on my spell mule's main inventory I keep 20 of each class quill, full stack of each thickener, the 5 used additive, all the inks. This leaves just enough room in my bags for food / drink , some regents like bone chips and tiny daggers etc.

On my main I keep all of the unpreped 61-75 stationery. with another bag of cleaned 61-70 stationery.

A research vendor in the Baz would be a god send!

But I hate /auctioning or /oocing in PoK and try to keep it a minimum.
