  • Research skill building

    Let's see...

My main, Gilud, is a 52 shaman.

I made a wizard to learn research, and used the practice rune system to build skill to about 100, and made the spell Odium for Gilud. Woot!

Now my wizard needs to get her skill close to 200 to make Spirit of the Howler. I've been reading, and rereading, various posts, and the spell research area...but still find myself confused and uncertain as to how to proceed to build research skill and make specific spells.

Do I continue to do the practice runes? I thought I read that with the new system, these are basically obsolete. While complicated and time consuming, they are clear and easy to follow. Is this true?

If instead I should build skill doing systematic research, how do I know what I need to collect and combine at the appropriate trivial without wasting money?

And recipies....I read "try one of these, and little of this, and 4 of those...", and I found the spreadsheet that uses ID numbers and is apparently out of date...

I'm unable to see the forest for the trees, as it were. Can someone please spell it out for me?

    Thank ye

You can get to around 243 skill buy making various Hide, Paper and Vellum solutions all from vendor bought items. But be aware that this is not a cheap way to skill up. If you plan on making the higher level (Ie 60+) spells then I recommend saving all of these solutions that you make because you will use them all as you make the higher spells. You should start with some hide solutions then Parchment solutions then finally Vellum and Paper solutions. The cost as you get to the parch and Vellum solutions run the per attempt to combine cost of almost 1k pp per. I don't remember exactly whet the costs were but they were up there. if you don't have a huge supply of play laying around you will have to spread this around. I would make a couple stacks of the solutions then make some spells and sell them on a trader. I would reseach which spells you can make then make those solutions needed. If you have a ton o Plat (IE 500K+) then you can make in bulk and store on a mule till you get the raw materials to make the spells you want to.

I hope this help you some if you have any further questions please feell free to ask.

Go to Complete Tradeskill Guide 5.0 (rev.10/2007) and scroll down to spell research. Good luck.

Thanks for the guidance, Meltheanlor and Krenayn.

Seeing as I have less than 10k to my name, and don't anticipate a huge influx of cash. I need a less expensive route. I can't just throw plat at it.

That's what I liked about the practice runes; once I found a place to get the raw-hide armor, it wasn't very costly, and I had fun leveling up my wizard.

I was under the impression that there was a similar path using systematic research, but I'm thinking I was mistaken.

I'm going to try some practice runes tonight to see if they still work; it is my understanding that there's no reason they shouldn't.

Start farming saltpeter and crystallized sulfer. They are used in almost all the sub-sub and sub combines for the solutions. Then make a few solutions at a time based on what you can afford and sell them in the bazaar. You should be able to move them and still make a profit if you price them well.

Thanks Gorse, I will. I hadn't thought of selling the solutions, and will investigate the market further.

After reviewing the recipies for practice runes again, I don't think I'll exercise THAT option

My hope now, for Spirit of Howler, is to see if it'll drop for me in Skyfire Mountains over the next couple levels

Also, you can hunt any spell caster type mob now for Stained Fine Runic Spell Scroll, which is the component for that spell. Find a friendly researcher with a high skill and donate to get it made. GL!

                  Yeah...

Mostly I'm farming the bazaar for saltpeter and crystallized sulfur to work on research skill...but eventually my wizard will have the skill, but the question of the recipie will still ellude me, I suspect.

I keep checking here, hoping that the database will be updated with the new combine. My hope is that it will be by the time I need it.

I've tried (not very hard, admittedly) to see if I could figure it out from the theory of systematic research, but haven't had an "ah ha" yet. Psyching out the recipie is another level of pleasure that I've not much aspired to nor obtained from tradeskilling.
