  • class specification and combines

What exactly determines if all int casters can make a spell versus only one class? I know about preist spells but I just made some combines for my mage for mage only spells Ward of Xegony and Flamesheild of Ro on my necro in my spell research kit.

Now, in the database, it is listed correctly that any int casters can make those spells. Yet when I look at, say the mage only spell like Tanson's elemental renewal it says only a mage can mage this combine.

The only difference is the spell level. What exactly determines who can combine what among int castsers? Thanks.

edit: While allah is frequently not as accurate as EQTC it implies that the spell in question can indeed be made by any int caster.

There are currently 2 research systems, both from different era's in the game.

The first system, I believe, was introduced with the games inception. That system limits which classes can make which spells. Ie Mages can make only Mage spells, but can they also make certain priest/hybrid spells. This system covers spells that came before the planes of power expansion, generally spells level 60 or less. Its components consists largely of drop pages and words from around norrath.

The second system, the much improved Systematic Research, was introduced with Depths of Darkhallow. It removed the resitrictions on which classes can make which spells, so that ANY researcher (which can only be INT classes) can make ANY spell that is researchable using this system. This system covers spells from Planes of Power onward, generally level 61 -70 but also include several lower level spells from the LDON expansion. Its main compontent is "unrefined" stationary which drop off mobs of appropriate levels. This Stationary is then cleaned and prepared with store bought items to create the spells.

It has been hinted that the new system will be expanded to include spells prior to Planes of power (perhaps making the original obsolete). The dev(s) just need the time to get to it.

Ahhh, the ever elusive, almost legendary, "Time". We are all looking for that drop.....

Ean, thank you for that great explanation. The fact that the system only included loy lower level spells was what was confusing me I think. I was not sure if something had changed. Best regards.

Just to clarify, LoY spells are quested and therefore not researchable (at this time anyway). I believe you meant to say LDoN.

LOY spells are quested, but with LoY's launch PoP spells became researchable using the Advanced research tomes

Admittedly, I don't have the best memory but I don't think PoP spells became researchable until DoDh. I think LoY added some sub-61 spells to those that were researchable.

Old system: Only very specific spells pre-kunark are researchable. Completely class restricted.

LoY launch enabled recipes for most Kunark, Velious, and Luclin spells.
Still using the old system of runes/words/etc. although new components were added. Int caster spells still fully class restricted. Wis caster spells makeable by any int caster. Hybrid spells and bard songs not makeable.

DoDh launch added PoP and GoD spells. This expansion added the new systematic (mostly) research method. All int caster, wis caster, hybrid spells, and bard songs makeable. No class restrictions.

TSS added LDoN and OoW spells.

To date, many (but not all) "quest" rewarded spells are unmakeable even if they're from one of the aforementioned expansions. There are exceptions.

Any "ancient" spell (2 each for pure caster classes in the Velious/Luclin era, 1 each for pure caster classes in the GoD expansion, 2 each for pure caster classes and 1 for hybrids in the OoW expansion) is not makeable.

Melee tomes are not makeable at all.

No retroactive modifications have been made. You still can't make hybrid Luclin spells for example. Not under either old or new system.

One minor correction: Hybrids get an Ancient in GoD also. Not researchable of course, but they do exist.
