I'm having a tough time with this one:

'Epicthieck's Edification Edition'
5 witheren pearls
5 sporilli webbings
5 stone snake sheddings
5 green snake sheddings
5 sand snake sheddings
5 serpent sheddings
5 sporgath floatation sacks
5 neurotic shiliskin tentacle bundles

Which mobs & zones do these come from?

I've killed snakes, witherens and sporgaths and have yet to see any of these drop.

I killed a fair number of these creatures in Undershore without getting any quest drops.

I did get a hair for one of the other books after killing about 10 ragepaws while waiting for a spell mission group to get together.

Neurotic Shiliskin Tentacle Bundles

From Illsalin mobs in instanced Ruins of Illsalin missions (hard) (via 70 spell progression and Dreadspire Access missions). I have no other sources for these yet.

I got all 5 serpent sheddings by killing the purple snakes in the water in corathus keep. I also got 1 stone snake shedding from those snakes. I'm afraid that either the stone snake sheddings are incredibly rare, or I need to kill a different kind of snake for those. We killed snakes for a couple hours in droves to get the 5 regular sheddings.

Well I'm about half done with the quest(Epithiecks), this is what I know

Sporali Webbing - Rare drop off mushrooms
Serpent Shedding - Rare drop off silverfin icefangs and venomspitters(1 every hour of killing the whole river)
Stone Snake Shedding - Rare drop off special silverfin icefang or venomspitter. Uh these are the ph for Slink and Slither respectively. They have a different attack and death message than the rest of the snakes in the river. From all the stuff I've killed, there seems to be only 2 stone snakes in the game.(or just 2 in Corathus) Anyone know how to get Corathus instances? There might be more there.
Necrotic Shilskin Tentacle Clusters - Rare drop off an illisian model. I got my 5 off the mindspore thralls(save mindspore to talk to rogue freemind for monster mission)
Green Snake Shedding - I assume these are off the moccassins in undershore. Probably do that today,
Splorgath Flotation Sacs - Rare drop off Splorgaths.
Witherian Pearl - Haven't killed any yet
Sand Snake Shedding - I assume rare drop off bog snakes. Unfortunately these take a long time to kill.

Update: Razorscale Moccassins Appear to be "green snakes". Snapjaw Moccassins appear to be "sand snakes". Both aren't that hard to kill. Unfortunately they share the spawn pool with a bunch of stuff(splorgaths, basilisks, cave fishers, witherians), so you'll have to kill everything to get them to spawn.

Is this useful, or did I sort of just waste all my time doing this quest (since I am not a gnome)?

It seems like there would have to be some benefit for the task other than to just unlock the recipes.

I will confirm that these drop off of normal and instanced mobs. And that this (epitheik's) will probably be the most difficult book (though ambleshift may also be dificult with the gargoyles)

There is a camp of "a female Darkhollow snake" with "a Stoneskin rattlesnake" (or something like this) in Stoneroot falls. Its a tough unforgiving camp but a lot of fun - had a few people stop buy in a four hour period to go WTF? The odd snake out looks like he is just a lucky guy but he is actually a ph for a named snake.

Anyways these snakes drop... wait for it... Stone Snake Eggs and Stone Snake Meat. HOWEVER unnaturally they dont drop a Stone Snake Shedding that I saw in a couple of hours. Instead they drop "Medium Snake Shedding" or something along those lines.

I would think that this is a mistake or perhaps just something thats been left out.

Anyways atm I have had a lot of luck with the 2 named phs in Creep have 2 Stone snake sheddings done now. 3 to go /sighs

As far as Dreadspire Gargoyle steel drops go have gotten one from instanced named gargoyle in "Narglator Pits" along with a couple of dusts. Slow going tho. I am thinking perhaps the gargoyles in the zone before the instance would also drop these.

Medium Quality Snake Shedding is for some other quest originating in Stoneroot. Snakes in Stoneroot are supposed to drop the MQ snake sheddings(kinda evil though that they're also stone snakes). As much as I'd LIKE to kill those snakes in Stoneroot, I can't since they're a tiny bit out of my league.

How high are the gargoyles in the pits? I figure I'll try and kill the lowest level possible out of all the stuff.

Only 1 gargoyle in the Pits its the named blocking the door for the end of the instance - he drops dust and bricks rarely. Not worth farming - incidental loot while doing missions

Which is the mission giver for the medium quality snake sheddings in stoneroot btw?

The guy for the quest in Stoneroot is Research Breznik or something like that. Incidentally if you're doing stuff in undershore(killing mocassins, splorgaths, and witherians), I suggest pairing up with the Clearing the Canals quest offered by the Free Traders. You only add cave fishers to your list of stuff to kill(and you'll be killing them anyways). And cave fishers are about the same difficulty as either type of snake, the splorgath, or the witherian gnasher(feeders are MUCH harder).

Agreed - Theres a quest also that you can do while farming Necrotic Feelers from the same guy with "Cleaning the Canals" collect 10 drops for faction and some pp and a healing potion.

There are also Gargoyle models in instanced mission #2? from Jarzaraad. The one with Fragment of Vishimitar.

There are also a lot of gargoyle models in Dreadspire.
