hate to break it to you but your gonna have to collect the scraps again after you get teh quest because it requires you to "loot count" them like most of the new wuests in DoDh

I don't think this is correct. The task steps were combining the 3 pages, not looting the scraps. AFAIK you are free to buy, trade, or whatever as long as you do the actual page combines after the task is assigned to you.

Just to bring a bit of info in here : you do first 3 steps of the quest of hailing and stuff, then get next 10 steps to loot (read:loot) to scraps. After that there are "???" lines. So, yes, you have to loot before you can progress anywhere at all.

I want to pointout that indeed the caster(side) quest
involves combining 3 tattered mechoinstruction pages BUt before that you have to actually loot the pages. Perhaps casters can bypass this step but it is highly doubtful.

Also for melee you dont combine 3 tattered mechanoinstructions you just loot 10 mechanoinstructions so there is no bypass available for the melee(side)

Ok, there are 2 different versions of the task given by Bellfast.

Task A (INT casters, eg. those with a Research Skill)
Buy your Spell Kit and when you go back and rehail Bellfast, you will receive Scrindite page #1.
Now you need to make the 3 different tattered mechanoinstructions from the 10 different scraps. (Use identify on the scraps and combine them so you can spell Mechanoinstruction, configuration, and Advisory book.)
You don't NEED to loot all 10 different pieces, merely combine them into the 3 tattered pages to turn in.
You will be given Scrindite pages 2,3, & 4 (you receive 1 for each tattered page you hand in).

Task B (everyone else)
Run the errand and get Bellfast his pinion gears from NPC.
Give them to Bellfast.
Now you have to physically loot all 10 different scraps and then turn those in to Bellfast.

Task A & B
Loot 5 Clockwork Pinion Gears
Loot 2 Clockwork Gears
You'll most likely come across another complete set of scraps while farming the gear drops, good time to either loot for an INT caster to use for their version, or help out a non-INT caster with their scrap looting progressions.

Task A
Return the gears to Bellfast and you will be given Scrindite's page #5.
Combine all 5 pages in your Spell Kit to create the Scrindite book.

Task B
Return all the gears to Bellfast and you receive your copy of Scrindite's book.

Once you have your book and have completed the basic task, ask Bellfast 'what more information?' and you can go through text dialogues to get the next 4 book tasks which will make farming for the first task seem like childs play.

Note: the Task A Research combines are all 15 trivial (no fail), so if you've never bothered working on your research skill, don't fret.

Ok, just to be clear - as a woodelf druid (lvl 70) I had to LOOT 10 scraps. Then turn in 10 scraps, then gather 5 of one thing and 2 of another thing. Another clearing of the creeps didn't give me any of the 7 items needed for the step i'm at.

It took me about 10 hours to loot all the 10 different scraps.. last one in itself 2 hours. After turning one of everything in, I still have 8 different left and most of these I have more than one left.

That explains it. I finished the first int caster task to make the book last night, and didn't realize that I have to go back and get more tasks from him.

Anyone figure out where the parchments drop yet? I've only been killing reapers so far, mostly, and haven't seen parchments yet.

level requirement

there was some talk earlier or in one of the other threads about level requirement. It is not the case or not completely. people not getting quest do not have a trade skill high enough requiring these quest. i saw one guy at 62 not get even first quest while my 61 ranger who only has one trade skill above 200 and that is smithing which is at 222 right now. the quest was different also in that when i did it with enchanter i had to make the combine and buy the research kit when ranger did it i had to loot the scrapes and hand back to belfast. but this allows you to get to next quests. i have not had time to complete for ranger to see if she will get all the quest like enchanter did or if she will just get the one related to smithing. enchanter got all but all trade skill 250 plus with research at 228 being the lowest.

There is a level requirement... but it is around 25 or 45 (I am at home and forget) There is another condition you need to get the quest.... read what he says

Level 70 warrior, Smithing/brewing/pottery/jewelcraft 220+, Merchant Model CGXIV will not respond when I say "What pinion gears", "pinion gears for bellfast", "bellfast's pinion gears", or anything else I could think of.

Bellfast says 'Oh! I see you have part of a mechanoinstruction! I need a few of those to make myself work better. If you can get me some of the complete [mechanoinstructions] I will give you a manual that will tell you how to make them. If you help me with this, I may have more you can [help me with].'

You say, 'what mechanoinstructions?'

Bellfast says 'A Mechanoinstruction is a small piece of parchment with holes in it in a certain pattern. These holes tell the machinery what it should do. We happen to have a few of them inside us to help the various parts of us work.'

You say, 'I can help you with it'

You have been assigned the task 'Parts for Bellfast.'
Bellfast says 'Go see Merchant Model CGXIV near the bankers and ask him about my [pinion gears] and he will give you a bundle that I need, and bring them back to me.'

You say, 'what pinion gears?'

No response.


He says "if you can find me some complete mechanoinstructions I will give you a manual yadda yadda. IF YOU HELP ME WITH THIS, I may have something else you can help me with.

SOO...in other words, I need a complete mechanoinstruction to get the quest to make mechanoinstructions? That doesn't make much sense I tried giving him the scraps I looted, he would have nothing of it.

I started this at the weekend, the text is definately "pinion gears for Bellfast"
however as a barbarian I discovered I literally had to stand on top of model CGXIV for him to respond and give me the pinion gears.

that is an old mechanic, and sounds like a code bug... so yeah /bug that since there is not anything I can do about it on the design side.
