  • New spell research with DODH

    http://eq.stratics.com/content/hoclogs/20050825.php

Brekkee - *Nolrog* With OOW (augments) and DoN (cultural), you set the bar pretty high for tradeskilling. What tradeskill goodies can we look forward to in DoD? Will the DoD tradeskills address any of the current issues, such as the non-wood elf/non-karana worshiper fletching path to 300?

Maddoc - Depths of Darkhollow will continue the trend with the Cultural based armor, allowing players to further customize their set of armor with more type 12 augmentations. We will also be introducing a completely new system for researching spells that I think you guys will enjoy.

    ...

Brekkee - *Nolrog* Will there be new skill up paths for research added soon, so that people can work their way up to 300? Currently, the effective cap is 227, because that's what the highest recipe trivials at. Will spells from older expansions (specifically PoP) become researchable?

Maddoc - There will be a host of new Research based recipes in Depths of Darkhollow which will allow players to research spells from Planes of Power and a spell or two from other, newer expansions.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! research is actually going to get some attention -- Thank You!!! (thats a sincere thank you btw and not a sarcastic one).

I just hope that with this new system, the component drops to make the new spells are increased as well. As I have said repeatedly, the issue is NOT that there is no route to 300 but that there is no skill up path to 227 because of the rarity/cost of components.

And...fanning myself...the statement holds out a promise of even allowing researching spells that are currently quested with ethereal/spectral parchments??? be still my beating heart

My only concern is that it be balanced between classes. For example if there was a mage spell made from 2 common components which was trivial 302 the other class had to work with rare materials to skill up then that would be a problem.

The easiest way to address this would be to have magician, enchanter, wizard, and necro spells have no trivial higher then 252 for example. Then use the spells for all other classes (which can be researched by all 4) be the path to 300.

      Kahzbot - 97 Gnome Enchanter - Tinkering (300), Research(300)
Kroger - 98 Rogue - Poison Making (300), Research (needs work)
      Shazbon - 96 Shaman - Alchemy (300)

Hopefully, at some point, they'll put in the ability to scribe scrolls from either what's in your own spellbook, or from a "learned" list.

There are other things that research could be applied to other than find 2-4 components out of 200, then press a button.

I wouldnt mind the ability to craft wands or scrollls with a limited number of charges, it would be pretty cool and make research a usefull ability, but i guess it would be a pretty big balance issue.

Well, they could limit recast time, as they did with the new vendor-buyable heal, clarity and speed potions.

I'd love to be able to create a scroll of Improved Invisibility, with say 5 charges. Make it expensive enough to combine that overall cost is 2-3 times the same # of cloudy potions (since SOE has this fetish about allowing non-invis classes like clerics access to a cheap & easy source of fixed durations invis, lol )

The Wand of strike of solusek 5 charges, tradeable right click, hand out 1 to each person on raid and open up the raid withh all 54 players clicking it = 54*2700 dmg = problem.
Solution make those items no drop, makes them use incredible rare components or only make certain spells craftable effectivly reducing it to useless ability.

As a wizard, I would love a no-drop 5-charge Wand of Solusek, even with a 2 min recast timer between charges. So it would not be useless.

Or better yet, a "Wand of MAss Translocation (zone name)" - so that we could AE TL to a limited # of specific zones

Could easily be done by managing which spells from each caster class get turned into wands and managing how long the recast times are as well as how rare and expensive the components are.

I could easily see any 1.5k nuke or dot becoming a wand of some sort.

This is only 145800 damage(assuming no resists), equivalent to 1 wizard. so what?

Unless the components to such wands was rather common when would you use it ?
The point is 1 wizard hardly is able to do 150000 dmg in 1sec, and if he did he would get some agro with it.
This would be equal to shaving of 150k of the mobs HP away, in fights where melee is imposible you could hand out those rods to speed it up alot faster.

My personal favorit would be items with no drop, lore tag, with common components.
If components was to rare i would bet none would use them, but if you needed common components then it would actually make research a valuable tradeskill and since they have a limited number of charges the items would deteriorate rather fast.
Finally they should be no drop, lore have a recast timer and only be craftable if it is a spell you have in inventory to avoid any balance issues.

                        - All spell scrolls should now be stackable. Please note that if you try to scribe more than one spell scroll at one time by using a stack of spell scrolls, that you will receive an error message. You must use only one spell scroll to scribe a spell.
From the patch message Sept 7th.

Maybe this is the first step in the changes? This one is nice to see for sure!

nodrop crafted stuff is TERRIBLE for crafters =/ attuneable? sure! but not nodrop, PLEASE no more nodrop stuff!

nodrop stuff just encourages uber folk who have no real interest in tradeskills, to power their way through and take components and future sales away from folks who actually LIKE crafting. even though i love being able to pass on my old gear when i upgrade, i'd rather have everything attuneable (a la eq2) than have any more nodrop crafted stuff added to the game.

i STILL sell a remarkable amount of components for the Solstice Earring. make some more stuff like that. maybe buy a scroll of Mage Fire, Wizard Fire, Enchanter Ire, Necro Bile, no-skill combine them (in a toolbox?) to make a nodrop Wand Of Nukeage. or something. there's lots of cool ideas for stuff all over these boards.

                            I like that idea.

And yuck... spells don't look like they are stacking after this patch, despite the patch message.

The patch message was a bit premature, but it WILL go in.
