Not real happy with these changes. Level 32 Necro here and found out about this when I went to train some additional points in research. Now I'm left feeling stuck at level 75 with no access to the higher level combines and no real abundance of raw materials to train up the 25 points to get to 100. Any creative solutions to my dilemma? 100 being the level at wich I can expect to get my Warlock's Book of Binding and utilize the extra options the advanced research offers.

    Any suggestions?

Most tradeskills form an nice optional component to the game. However for Necromancers and Mages spell research is the sole means to get certain spells, including pet spells that otherwise may prove to be impossible to get. With this new change my best bet for getting my next pets is to blow a wad of plat on a spell already researched by someone in the bazaar OR blow a wad of plat (or time for practice runes) to achieve the skill level necessary to successfully research the spell. I'm still trying hard to find a positive note for this change.

Hmm, looking at the Pre-Loy Necro Research spells, I see that there are a couple of spells with very high trivials, that have one-component 'combines'.

      Spell: Lich, trivial 182
combine Words of the Ethereal (and nothing else) in the necro research tome.

      Spell: Paralyzing Earth, trivial 182
combine Words of Crippling Force (and nothing else) in the necro research tome.

These words are not too uncommon, so start vendordiving.

Its sort of ironic, but my experience has been that in some cases the actual spell scoll for necromancer pets was selling at a price that was a lot less than the components used to make them. I am guessing its simple economics ~ "law of suppy & demand" at play.

Thankfully, I trained up all my casters to 200 (necromancer, magacian, wizard and enchanter) before they made the change. Now all I have to be concerned about is finding enough rare components to get them to 300...

A couple of points regarding the suggestion above.

          1) The same Words of the Ethereal combined in a LoY tradeskill container can be used to make Ethereal Scried Swatch which besides trivialing at 132 (closer to my current skill level) probably has a better resale value in the bazaar on a success.

          2) What I was trying to express in my previous post is that there exists a definite barrier to entry vis a vis the 100 skill level requirement for getting the LoY research container. Check out the number of items (not necro only) that would be available for me to purchase and combine at level 92 for LoY swatches.

          Note*:
I found a couple of copies of Words of the Ethereal in Gunthak last night. At >10pp each they are very much on the high end of what I'm able to afford currently. Under the old way I could purchase the points for 76 - 80 for what 20pp? 40pp? Now I get to pick from 2 very (at least for me at level 32) expensive components with a 100% failure rate to try to raise my skill.

So anyways after spending 2 hours scouring every vendor I thought might contain words I ended up with two copies of Words of the Ethereal which brought, my skill from 75 to 76 (2 fail 1x skillup) for 22pp and 2 hours invested. Not going to dwell too much on the negative here but I'm not feeling the love at the moment.

As an intellectual excercise name me one other tradeskill in EQ1 where you can't reach ~100 skill on common fairly easily available materials.
Tailoring doesn't count as far as I'm concerned because crystalline silks can be farmed pretty easily.
          JC - vendor bought
          Brewing - vendor bought
          Smithing - vendor bought
Baking - fish rolls (need I say more?)
Fishing - buy some cheap bait
          Fletching - vendor bought
          Pottery - vendor bought
          Tinkering - vendor bought
          Make Poison - ???

What it boils down to for me is remove the skill cap on the LoY research containers. With the recent changes if I own the expansion then I should be able to get the container.

~10pp per combine is fairly cheap, really. Perhaps not for the early stages up to skill 100-120 or so, but if you only pay 10pp per combine all the way to skill 182, consider yourself fortunate. All the other skills you list may have cheap routes to skill up on in the early stages, but most (not all) get exponentially more expensive (in time or plat) as the trivials increase after a certain point.

I encourage you to /feedback in-game, and post suggestions/ideas to improve Spell Research (especially at the EQ Live forums, as the Devs might not necessarily see it here, although they are more active on EQTC's boards than most Devs are on any other messageboards.)

Also, give it a bit of time. Removing the caps and trainability to 200 was just the first step. I think there will be more to come (no I don't have inside info.)

MP can be store bought to skill 275, I think it is less than 10p per combine, not sure.

Cheap way to imp fairly fast

If you really want to imp your research skill to 180+ then just look around the merchants in PoK or SH (pool end near the bank). They always have hundreds of pages/runes available that have been sold to them and these can be bought for around 3pp or less. Above 180 it slows considerably and you need to start farming the rarer high level items.

So do you still need to train in research to use it? Tried combining the stuff for voice graft in the book of dark bindings, but it wouldn't combine.

                    things you should know:

-your researcher must be level 16 to learn the skill
-Guildmasters are currently bugged so you cannot put even one point into spell research to learn the skill, at the moment. This should be fixed with the next patch (~ mid-march)

                      ?

has anyone even dinged 201 in spell research yet? I looked around and didn't see anything mentioned. I didn't even think spell research was considered a "tradeskill", so I haven't even tried to raise my skill over 200 yet.

Yes, my enchanter skilled up to 201 research so far.

Is Research your only 200+ tradeskill, or did you hit 201 and have 200+ in a "real" tradeskill?

This is an improvement is it?

Being a necro and having some rather difficult to obtain spells, I decided to make spell research a primary concern. I spent every skill point I could in it when I could afford them, since skilling by combines is terribly time consuming.

Imagine my shock when I answered the call of a fellow necro who could not train in spell research, only to find the neither could I... The biggest annoyance was that the trivials for my spells were higher than I could attain due to the level cap I was confined by, for those spells that I just could not obtain any other way. So they fixed this? The cure is indeed worse than the disease...

Supposedly, the level caps for these skills have been removed along with the ability to train past 20. Is that not working as intended? (Yes, I know you can't train at all period right now...that's a bug.)
