3rd shawl - griffin eggs... broken?

When I did this part I bound in EW on the bridge and whenever I got on I would pop in, check track and kill any griffins I happened to find, for me it wasn't a matter of getting eggs off the griffins (though still had problems there) It was more of the fact that I could never find any. I got up 3 eggs myself and while I was trying to get the last one I offered 200pp for loot rights to one. About 20 minutes later I got a tell with a loc and I was much happier, also got it on the first combine.

I did this in march/april on Xev and - it would appear that you're just having a bad run with the RNG - I grabbed another SK who was a buddy and we got a mid-40s bard and tore EW up big time - averaged an egg drop every 4-5 griffs - everyone walked home with eggs inside of about 2-3 hours.
No more EQ for me till they fix the crash bug.

Anyone have word on PH's or spawn points for griffons? A druid friend and I spent maybe 3-4 hours running around EW hunting griffons and elder griffons. First kill dropped an egg, and that was it. We took down maybe four griffons in the first hour, then zilch for the next two (none were on track), then two more griffons in the fourth hour.
In the interim, we did our best to slaughter anything that moved in the vicinity. Aside from manticores, which proved rather nasty, and one time where my druid friend tried to AE five green mobs and failed miserably (he just got them perma-annoyed at him and almost died), we did a pretty good job of cleaning up. However, we couldn't find anything to go on. =/
Ulthork meat was common enough; I got the two bits in maybe six kills, and there were plenty of ulthorks running around. Tundra bears were rarer to find, but I got the meat on the second or third kill.
It's just the rarity of the griffons combined with the rarity of the drop when you do take down the griffon.
Oh, and on a tangential rant, did we ever find any kind of logic behind the griffin / griffon / griffenne / griffawn naming used in the game? :twisted:Sir KyrosKrane Sylvanblade

Griffon = Adult male grif.Originally posted by KyrosKraneOh, and on a tangential rant, did we ever find any kind of logic behind the griffin / griffon / griffenne / griffawn naming used in the game?
Griffenne = Adult female grif.
Griffawn = Juvenile grif. (of either sex).
It's amazing, the things you pick up from the EQ PnP game.

Bad news -- the PHs are manticores.Originally posted by KyrosKraneAnyone have word on PH's or spawn points for griffons?
As for spawn points -- there are a bunch of potential spawn points not far from the bridge to IC, and some near Kael. Don't know about other parts of the zone.
Best idea is to bring a tracker, though...Velurian

I hadn't noticed that the PHs were manticores. I hunted them in the area between the ice bridge and the RyGorr fort and just kept killing everything else in the area (kodiaks, cougars, mammoths, bunnies, etc). Ended up with all four eggs and the HQ pelts I needed for the first ring. I don't think I killed a manticore the entire time.Originally posted by HibashiraHow did you find out?Bad news -- the PHs are manticores.

Had a real tough time with my 4th egg, finally dragged a druid friend out with me. Wiped out the griffins in the area; had 3 manticores within tracking range within like 10 minutes (none before we started). Killed the manticores, then got 2 manticores and a griffin; killed those, got three griffins.Originally posted by HibashiraHow did you find out?Bad news -- the PHs are manticores.
It's possible that these were all (or mostly) just wanderers from outside of tracking range, but it seemed consistent enough to conclude that the manticores and griffins likely shared a spawn table.Velurian

There have been reports of similar experiences with several different animals out there, including mammoths, bunnies, and cougars. I'm not even going to guess at what the mechanics of it might be, but killing any of the animals in areas griffs are known to haunt should produce griffs.Originally posted by VelurianIt's possible that these were all (or mostly) just wanderers from outside of tracking range, but it seemed consistent enough to conclude that the manticores and griffins likely shared a spawn table.

Having done this part for 3 toons and assisting with it for quite a few more, I can tell you that Manticores are not the sole Place Holders for Griffons. In the past I left the manticores/mammoths/rhinos alone due to them being harder to kill than the bears/cougars/wolves/bunnies and have had no problems spawning Griffons. Doesn't hurt to kill them but general slaughter of any animal in the area is a more surefire way than sticking with one particular type.

Having taking me months of on again, off again snow griffon hunting to get the four eggs for my druid, I wasn’t looking forward to doing it all over again for my shaman. But I hunted EW with a warrior and necromancer friend yesterday and we got all four eggs in about an hour. In fact, the first two kills had eggs on them. I was certain I was dreaming. But I still had the eggs this morning so it must have really happened. My baking is 191 so I think my chances are as good as they are going to get. I just hope I don’t drop one of the eggs when I try to bake the Soufflé.Pait Spiritwalker

When I did the 3rd shawl the griffon eggs were by far the biggest pain. I found a fairly good 'spawn' point -- just slightly north of where Icefang (?) spawns.
The RNG was streaky for me too -- I killed about 12 griffons before my first egg, another 3-4 to get the 2nd; and the last 2 eggs were on 3 griffons.
But think- next you get to play dodge with the Kromrif Death Squads in order to spawn the dwarf you need for the 4th shawl
