  • Updates for Vah Shir Weapons Quests

Since my husband and I have just been through this for all 5 classes, I figured I would give you some updated info that might help fill out missing spots.

First off a quick guide to Hollowshade drops that can be added to all class areas. With the exception of the last three drops you need, Guardian Talon, Guardian Claw, and Chieftain Staff, the drops are easiest to find when a race is in its main camp. Also you'll need to take into account that Hollowshade is frequently farmed by higher levels for shrieking substances, howling substances, acrylia, and drops off named mobs. Because of this often one race has taken over ALL the caves. Unfortunately, the zone is currently broken and if the Prince has not spawned when all camps are overtaken by one race then the zone cannot be reset without a GM zone reset or a server reset. It takes a full GM to do the reset and sometimes they will not reset it for various reasons. It takes time persistence and a willingness to spend a lot of time in Hollowshade petitioning and watching for zone resets. Because of all of this it's suggested you find out Exactly what items you need from each race and be ready to loot them all even if you don't need them immediately. It'll save you a lot of time in the long run.

As for getting a race to move from one camp to another, See Alakazam's info on Hollowshade war and the additional user posts for how to switch camps around. Basically though if you kill a named in one of the camps you'll see a zone wide message about 10 to 15 minutes latter stating one camp is attacking another. It's best if you don't want them to succeed to kill off the spawned attackers (this takes a tracker to catch them usually). Generally though if not killed off the defenders will win and the camp will remain as is. If you want the attackers to succeed then its best if you wait till they have attacked the defenders and then help them kill the defenders off. They will then enter the cave or chief’s hut and that area will be switched to the attackers’ race.

Owlbear Drops - Most frequently off the lower level owlbears, cubs and grapplers, when they're in their main area between their regular Owlbear Cave in the south and the Vah Shir Outpost near Shar Vahl Zone.

Sonic Wolf Drops - Most frequently off the lower level wolves, cubs and wolflings, when they're in their main area where the river comes down from the zone wall and splits to run out to the islands. This area is between the Grimling zone and the Owlbear Caves. You'll get some drops out of the actual cave in the east but not all of them and not as frequently as when you hunt the river area.

Grimling Drops - Seem to only drop when they're in their own island camp. Basically the casters, spiritists and mystics, and the fisherman have all you need.

Ground Drops - Just take a bit of looking around on the land for little brown bags or red and black stones. Once you've found what you’re looking for mark the loc and come back frequently. Also look for similar places you may find more Ground Spawn of the same type there.

Turtle Drops - There's a really good island out a bit from the Grimling Camps that has about 4 or 5 turtles spawn on it. They're a pretty quick spawn and do not appear to assist each other so just sit there and kill them off as quickly as you can.

Garrison Cloak Drops - These are the exception to the rule. They are all rare drops and appear to only drop when the war is in progress (meaning one camp has attacked another but not necessarily succeeded) and only when the race is in its own camp. The Guardian Owlbear Talon drops off the upper level Owlbears, Razorbeaks and Fleshrenders around their main cave (we found they dropped outside and off the guards of the cave so never went inside). The Sonic Wolf Guardian Claw drops off Sonic Wolf Guardians and regular Sonic Wolfs in their main cave. The Grimling Chieftain Staff drops off of Spiritists and the Chief at the main Chieftain’s camp on the hills next to the islands.

OK now for fixing specific details

Vah Shir Beastlords Guide, I suggest you move the part with collecting the 2 small owlbear claws to get your stretching tool into the class specific area instead of the Sonic Wolf Bane area. All the other Classes had it done that way and it was rather confusing to see only the Beastlords separated like that

Vah Shir Rogues Guide, their cloaks are all + % Mod's to Baking not Pottery Bards do pottery. This was also in the Beyond Sonic Wolf Bane section too.

Sonic Wolf Bane Guide, needed the bard section updated a bit so I edited it here for you

Bards must create the ceramic sleeves using pottery. The ingredients are: ashes of dark ritual, flask of water, vial of owlbear bile, sonic wolf blood, black silt clay, sketch (NPC provided see Bard Guide) for claw or blade. Then fire with a quality firing sheet. The ashes of dark ritual drop off grimling spiritists in Hollowshade Moor. Owlbear bile is dropped off owlbear cubs and grapplers in Hollowshade. The sonic wolf blood can drop off any wandering sonic wolf in Hollowshade Moor. The black silt clay is a waters edge and possibly underwater ground spawn in Hollowshade Moor.

Beyond Sonic Wolf Bane Guide, just needs a few adjustments to make things easier. Ahom Guzhin, who is found just inside the tunnel from Hollowshade Moor to Grimling Forest off to the left in the cupola partly hidden behind a rock. Historian Sharar, who is in the Palace Courtyard in Shar Vahl in the library area that is off to the right as you enter the Palace Courtyard from the Merchants area. General Avilah who is in the North section of Shar Vahl, towards Hollowshade, in a room on the 3rd floor of a building (use the outside stairs). And I'll update all the Garrison Cloak info in just a bit when i have the time to log all the chars on

      How long?

About how long did it take to get your 5 characters to the point where they could craft the sonic wolfbane parts? I'm faced with doing this myself, since no one on Terris-Thule seems much interested in doing the quest.

I recently did the same thing except I had a beastlord helping me. I am a shaman. I created alts to do the bard, rogue and warrior parts.

I would move all three to the selected camp and then log them off. The beastlord and my shaman would kill the MoBs and then if anything needed dropped I would log the proper alt on and loot the item while he continued to kill. It took about a week of six to eight hour days to collect all the parts and another week to get the three alts proficient enough to do the combines. Skill levels were rogue-baking 135, warrior-smithing 123, and bard pottery-122. I went 9 for 10 on the combines.

The real bottleneck was the sonic wolf blood since three of the five classes need it. The drop rate is not up to par with the demand. The grimlings proved to be the worst for dropping the needed items though.

Total time involved was about two weeks of determined play and total cost was about 500pp for training and equiping the three alts so they could survive travelling across HM. The alts are only level 6 so there is no way they could farm the items themselves but they could take a hit or two in order to grab a loot even if it was near a MoB.

          Acrylia Flecked Nugget

I'm having a hell of a time finding Acrylia Flecked Nuggets and Rough ore Pieces from the rhinobeetles for the Warrior quest. Is there any other way of getting those things? I killed 15 rhinobeetles tonight and didn't see a single nugget drop.

The nuggets and ore are just rare. That was one of the slowest steps for me too. Just keep plugging away at it and they will drop.

Other frustrating parts are the seven owlbear feathers and 8 owlbear guts bards need, and the Fatty Owlbear Meat that both rogues and warriors need. Both are common but the amount you need will make them a sticking point.

              Whew.

I perservered and got enough ore and nuggets. Raised my warrior's smithing to 68 and made the bolts. Now I'm on the shopping list. It wasn't so hard to get the ore and nuggets, just takes a little time.

Unfortunately, Owlbears aren't up on Terris-Thule currently so I can't get any fatty owlbear meat. :/

Hey there Rose, great job on the post

A couple of comments to some questions that were coming up on how best to deal with supply issues on the items. Simple matter of fact is get some friends and AE the lot of them. The times that Rosewynde would bring Rothe out I'd come along with my Druid, Rothe would aggro the entirety of a camp and while they were beating on his damage shield I'd run up in the squabble and let of a blast of upheaval. I'd say we'd wind up killing off about 12 to 20 mobs in one shot with very little trouble.
This tactic allowed us to very quickly get the loot we needed (allbeit quickly was a couple of weeks, due to waiting for the zone to get it's mind straightened out) and be on to the next step.

Another interesting fact that I noticed was that while making the combines with my bard and a pottery skill of just below 120 and an int of 102 (with KEI), I got one skill up per combine attempt. This may have been a fluke, but I've noticed that with the other pottery quest in Shar Vahl I get skill increases a lot more often than I would with normal pottery combines.

Anyhow good luck to all and may Hallowshade evermore fear Rothe and Rosewynde as they truly own that zone on Innoruuk.

I can't begin to say how happy I am to see that there is a person who is competant at doing all 5 parts (and knows how to do it) on Innoruuk. I might come hunting for you some day soon if you have the free time. (c:

This quest is quite the painful one due to the fact that it's tradeskill oriented (Gotta love collecting parts for hours then failing the combines.. rrr), then having to deal with the constantly broken state of Hollowshade, as well as getting rare and ultra rare items to drop.

In the end it's a great feeling of accomplishment, plus it helps you to meet others.. I attribute getting into my current guild to this quest as I helped a Vah Shir Shaman get her peices, befriended her, and then joined her guild.

I'm still at the Garrison cloak mainly due to currently having a back slot item that is better than the Officer cloak and my guild not having the manpower to do the general's war to get the Hero's cloak. (Seems to me that since you had to work together to get the items for the weapons that the general's war should allow at least 5 different people to get their hero cloaks since the war is so very difficult)

What is the result of this combine:

                          salass moss
                          tortoise saliva
                          sonic wolf blood
                          poison dart felt

Mix in these items in a no drop acrylia mortar & pestle

For the rogue part, once these items are combined, you take the result and bake with a poison vial and water. I just need to know what the result of the sub combine is.

                          Thanks!

Medallion of the Hero of Shar Vahl

                            Hello all,

I know that the tradeskill portion of this quest seems to be over but I progressed on this past the Officer Cloak last night and wanted to give an update. I hope this does not offend.

The Raids in Grimling Forest have been changed. You now progress through 9 raids with a final raid on the grimling town in the NE corner of the zone. After killing the boss mob I was able to loot the Medallion of the Hero of Shar Vahl. I quickly combined this item with my Jharin Officer Cloak in my security satchel that I had kept for far too long and went to find Sergeant Cursah.

Unfortunately the good sergeant does not seem to be spawning. Has anyone else run in to this issue? Did they replace him with another mob to turn in the locked security satchel? I am wary and have been advised by a guide not to try handing in the item to other mobs in hopes they replaced the sergeant with another mob.

Thank for any light you can shed on this.

                              congratulations

What level of force was necessary to do the raids now?
