I guess, for shawl 1, that after the pally speaks the words the cleric turns in the toes, correct

The text sequences are irrelevant to most of the actual quest steps. There are a couple places where you have to do something like that to get an NPC in the right state. Mainly the game checks your faction and whether you have the right items in your inventory to further this quest. There are two definite exceptions. For shawl 6 or 7 you have to say a phrase to the air to make a ground spawn, and KOS person just can't make it work. Also, there is a step to get a tradable item from a bartender that requires a non-KOS person to talk to him.

The trick for questing KOS is to be invisible behind the NPC, open a trade window, then have invisibility cast upon you before you hit the trade button. It's tricky, and you may have to have someone else keep the NPC's attention while you make the exchange. If all else fails, have an enchanter or cleric cast pacification on the NPC and stand at far trade range to open the trade window.

My feeling is that Verant made this quest doable this way on purpose. There are just too many loopholes where there would normally be roadblocks. That doesn't mean Sony didn't change something when I wasn't looking. I last did shawl questing in August.

As for the Loremaster, pull him out of the chapel to make your play. All the students will aggro you otherwise. While training a bunch of lowbie mobs around Thurgadin is utterly hilarious the first 2 or 3 times, it gets old by the 9th time you talk to him.

Same with the girl in the bank. Drag her out so you don't have a big war every time you fail your tailoring combine.

It takes only a couple days to get your faction up. So unless you have a compelling reason, you might as well spend that time rather than mess around being KOS. During my first 7 shawls, I was required to not kill giants by the Yelinak head in my inventory. As soon as I completed that quest, I headed off to the Giant Fort to do my Coldain duty for shawl 8.

person who hands the 7th shawl to the avatar gets the 8th shawl. if you alreay have the 8th you can remake the armor and do the walk again. just make the kos person hand in the 7th shawl.

      Maker of Picnics.
Cooker of things best left unidentified.

It has to be an approved 7th shawl though IIRC. Meaning you have to have handed it in to Dain or the Chamberlain already.

Giants with beards for CoV faction. Clean chins for coldain faction. Of course the tougher the mob, the better the faction.
The baking part of the shawl quest gives Dain faction. So I suppose doing the baking repeatedly can help.

Not sure how someone with the 8th can remake the armor. You have to show the 7th shawl to get the issue kit.

Arena mobs don't give Coldain faction. The manor is where you will get the correct faction hits and you can pick up your blood while you are at it.

Repeat after me: Arena mobs don't give Coldain faction.

I have a question - My cleric is doing this quest and I cant get Frundle Frenkler to give her the Velium Purifier. I was really dissapointed. How good does my faction have to be to get that?

Not sure on the faction thing. Believe every time I've done the shawl the character was ally to the coldain. Not sure what you have tried with her, but per the quest walkthrough:

She will not respond to a Hail, but when you ask her about velium vapors she gives you the Velium Purifier that you need.

Assuming your faction was ok for the 1st 3 shawls, you could always get a friend to make the vial of velium vapors and get the note from tanik, and then just MQ the shawl. I've done this before for a couple friends that didn't want to do pottery yet.

My experience has been that you get +CoV and +Coldain hits clearing Kael until you get to the Arena, when the +Coldain hit is replaced by a -King Tormax hit. The +CoV hits in the Arena are big.

I've been in the rif house (what you're calling the manor), but for the life of me I can't remember what the faction hits were. I think, I think, if you do the cycle there's a +Dain adjustment on the dorf traitor kill, but I can't recall clearly.

Correct, however my post was directed at comments like these:

Having just had similar faction issues, except with the Dain, this is your best solution, depending on your available resources.

Go to Illia's Bestiary and look under Coldain faction for what gives positive Coldain, and see what is your most economical kill.

While remaking my Dain faction from KOS, my Coldain went to max ally. For the Dain, the single best ways to keep good Dain is to simply never kill him, or go do Tmax 2-3 times per Dain kill. I took one raid kill hit and a couple from his guards, and it took 3 Tormax kills, 15 first shawls, 15 second shawls, 10 4th ring, 4 first ring, and 5-6 3rd ring to get back to dubious. I think the best bang for your buck is to kill wolves and giants in GD or EW, or even a couple of 10th rings if you can help, and when do clerics get turned away?

I bought every rygorr invasion plans I could in the baz, and just turned them in one after another, a positive hit for each one, then gate out.

Also, I would not chance the invisibility trick, there are just wayyy too many coldain in that church, you will get spanked.
