  • Shawl Quest question

When trying to spawn Tanik Greskil or the Death Squad ... can you run over the trap locations while invisible? I intend on trying this at a rather low level ... I'm just trying to utilize any advantage I can get. Thanks for the info.

I am pretty certain that the death squad can see invis. Get some sow potions and make a hot key for the train to Kael and your set.

They did not seem to have any trouble keeping up with me when I was SoWed. I got lucky and channelled a gate through being beat on by them. Made it out with around 100hp.

Yes, you can trigger them while you are invis. Nope, they do not see invis. I have also outrun them easily with sow. Sometimes I was visible when I ran over a spawn point while sowed and got away before they even agroed. But when they do agro, they hit hard and will often stun you. I wouldn't be surprised if they could stun and kill you before you were able to resume running.

Are you sure they don't see invis? Because I know for a fact that when I did the quest long ago, that they did see invis. This may have changed of course.

Well, I'm going to be doing this at 19th level with 453 hit points on a dialup connection. I'm not going to survive several hits .. much less have time to be stunned. The Invis part my of plan is pretty important ... If anybody can confirm that it does indeed still work, that would be perfect.

Just this weekend I triggered them on my way into Kael. I stopped to con them from a safe distance because they hadn't agroed at all and I was curious if it was my invis or if I'd gone by too fast. They were indifferent, which in my case DEFINITELY means they couldn't see me.

I suppose it's possible that they randomly see invis or not the way some other mobs do. Or else it might have been changed sometime.

When I did this portion of the quest I Triggered both a Death Squad and Tanik on the same trap. I was able to run a big enough circle to run past Tanik and give him the item. The giants caught up and killed me but I had gotten the item I needed. All I needed to do then was get my corpse and continue on with the quest.

When I was doing the quests for a second character, a friend was bored and came to help, invisible... ran into a death squad my partner had just trained partway to Kael, got aggro, and died, though invisible. This was perhaps two months ago? So at least some do see invis.

I did this quest last night on my baby necro and they DO see invis.

The easiest way to do this quest is find an ogre beastlord (since they are not KOS to Kael by default) and use the 'pet trick.' That way if he triggers the KDS, he doesn't aggro them and you can stand a safe distance away and wait for the giants to despawn. If the dwarf spawns with the KDS (which is fairly common), the beastlord can hail the dwarf until the giants despawn and you can run up and turn-in

                      Hello!

I just wanted to add my experience with this step. I've done this shawl quest with three of my characters (two that I play to the 8th, my first character to the 7th) and have lent a hand many times. (Yes, I've taken speech and am a strong believer in listing credentials).

I've had situations where I wander around invis and throughout the whole process not get hit once. I've also been sent to my bind spot without much forewarning, thinking I'm cozy and safe in my little invisible bubble. It seems that it can go either way, spawning giants that can see through invis or no, though of late my luck has gone with the former.

Your best bet with this step is either with a necro/sk (who have pets, can FD, wait for despawns, and try again) or the ogre beastlord bit. Don't count on invis to save you, use one of the more dependable tactics mentioned above.

                      Good luck!

My druid had little problem with this, other than getting him to spawn over the KDS. What I did was charm a mammoth and park him by the ramp. Pet also points in the general direction of the closest mob, or the trigger - "pet trick"

When I spawned the KDS, I ran directly to my charmed pet, which stopped all the guards. While my fury friend took his mammoth beating , i had time to succor. I would then run back, KDS would be gone, and I'd do it all again, and again, and again.....

It's a pain in the rump to run that far 20 or so times, so I thought I would bind by ST and just gate..... that does not work very well because you don't actually leave the zone..... the KDS doesn't actually lose agro either, so they were still up each and every time i tried this method.

                          Hehe

Think that at 21st level, my pet can stop the death squad long enough for a gate? Hehe. I'm ok with taking a death or two if I happen to spawn the DS, I can spend 20 minutes and get that exp back. This looks easy compared to the next step though ...
I am not sure how I am going to get the silks or bile for the quest after this one.

Do people in velks let the silks rot or do I have a good chance of getting to collected these items at level where I have no business even being in the zone? No, guild, no high level alts (I have never had a character that has seen Velks). Time to face up to the fact that I'm dead in the water until I get some more levels under my belt, I think.

bind at the huts. succor and then gate back.

no your pet would get eaten like rosanne eats twinkies. many will let the silk in velks rot. not a lot of peeps xp there though. less than use to. i plan to drag some friends along. as a high 30s wizard when i tried it the wurms will eat you too. kept it rooted and we kept blasting each other for about the same % life. made the last nuke kinda hairy hehe.

Hmm ... only the named see invis in Velks if I remember correctly. Perhaps there is hope yet.

I'm gearing up for the turn in hopefully tonight. Thank you for all the info, it is greatly appreciated.
