I did this without ever having to trigger the death squad. I think this is a well known trick, so apologies if I am being repetitive.
I charmed a snow bunny and used it to point to the location of the nearest trap. Then I picked up something on the cursor and tried to "drop" it at various places around where the trap should be.
When you click on the trap the UI treats this as if you are trying to do a trade - you get a message "You are too far away from XXX to trade".
The text XXX depends on whether the trap triggers the death squad or the dwarf. The text is truncated and I can't remember the exact words, but death squad is something like "you have been ambushed..." and the dwarf "you stumble over a...".
So if you get "You are too far away from You stumble to trade" then it is the dwarf.
If you get "You are too far away from You have been to trade" then it is a death squad trigger - move to a different spot and try again.
All in all this only took me about 10 minutes, but I could have been lucky. I think there are a number (around 8?) different traps, and I'm not sure whether there is always at least one dwarf, or whether you may get all death squads, in which case you would need to trigger the spawns to reset them (but at least you would know what is coming!).
