I did this without ever having to trigger the death squad. I think this is a well known trick, so apologies if I am being repetitive.

I charmed a snow bunny and used it to point to the location of the nearest trap. Then I picked up something on the cursor and tried to "drop" it at various places around where the trap should be.

When you click on the trap the UI treats this as if you are trying to do a trade - you get a message "You are too far away from XXX to trade".

The text XXX depends on whether the trap triggers the death squad or the dwarf. The text is truncated and I can't remember the exact words, but death squad is something like "you have been ambushed..." and the dwarf "you stumble over a...".

So if you get "You are too far away from You stumble to trade" then it is the dwarf.

If you get "You are too far away from You have been to trade" then it is a death squad trigger - move to a different spot and try again.

All in all this only took me about 10 minutes, but I could have been lucky. I think there are a number (around 8?) different traps, and I'm not sure whether there is always at least one dwarf, or whether you may get all death squads, in which case you would need to trigger the spawns to reset them (but at least you would know what is coming!).

This doesn't work anymore. You can no longer initiate a trade (or give, really) with an invisible npc. If you click right on them with an item on your cursor nothing will happen.

boy did i get lucky on this task.. not knowing how nasty of a time it could be i took my 54 magician down to poke around by myself (well with a water pet.. who was probably an ice pet after a while)

i kept running up and down the causeway but couldn't get any pops. sow finally fell and i was getting bored. then i remembered reading about parking your pet and having it point to face the nearest mob. i did this at the top of the ramp and ran back and forth in the direction he was facing. after a few short jobs i hear "you stumble over someone in the snow" or whatever the message is. i handed over the item, got the letter and ran back to hand it in (and my shawl).

sorry if you have some party-wipe horror story, remember someone out there does get through easy (sorry.. didn't mean to brag..)

You can still use a charmed pet to show you where the traps are then just go run around and stomp in that general direction...and have the "train to kael" hotkey ready!

I tried the train to kail key, but I found my Feign Death key much more useful. =) Took awhile, but I managed to spawn Tanik with only one death involved (Jumping off the high side of the ramp is a bad idea).

Thanks for all the information here. I found it very useful.

After hours of trying to run around getting this trigger to work, some kind people in the eqtraders chat channel told me about the /pet trick. Summoned my pet and about 5 minutes later the deathsquad And that Tranik spawned. Was a little scary as I ran off before looking for Tranik, then had to backtrack with the Deathsquad on my tail hehe. Did my turn in, ran toward southwest part of zone and gated before they got to me.

So yes, the /pet trick does work Just make sure you have sow on
