So, probably like a zillion other EQ players confronted with shared bank space, I decided to make a Bazaar Mule to sell my stuff in Teh Bizarre(tm). For reasons which would only make sense to me, I whipped up an Ogre Warrior. And, just for funsies, I turned in his guild note to the warrior guild master.
Here's what happened afterwards:

What ho? He's mentioning [trades] there at the end of his intro dialog. That seems new. So I ask "What trades?"

When I asked him about the trades, he handed me a book. The book covered the VERY basics of the 7 universal tradeskills. (Well, more accurately, it covered the very basics of 4 of the tradeskills. If you ask "What second book?" you get another book that covers the other 3.)

My curiosity was piqued, so I logged out, created another n00b -- this time a gnome. I wanted to see if maybe the gnome books mentioned tinkering. Turns out they don't. But when you ask "What trades?" and "What second book?" respectively, you get the identical text to what Guntrik the Ogre Warrior Guildmaster said in response to the same questions. Thus explaining his sudden increase in intelligence: he was channeling a gnome (probably the one he had for lunch).
No conclusions here or deep, philosophical noodling. Just thought it was interesting enough to warrant comment.
