  • SOE pushing tradeskills for n00bs?

So, probably like a zillion other EQ players confronted with shared bank space, I decided to make a Bazaar Mule to sell my stuff in Teh Bizarre(tm). For reasons which would only make sense to me, I whipped up an Ogre Warrior. And, just for funsies, I turned in his guild note to the warrior guild master.

    Here's what happened afterwards:

What ho? He's mentioning [trades] there at the end of his intro dialog. That seems new. So I ask "What trades?"

When I asked him about the trades, he handed me a book. The book covered the VERY basics of the 7 universal tradeskills. (Well, more accurately, it covered the very basics of 4 of the tradeskills. If you ask "What second book?" you get another book that covers the other 3.)

My curiosity was piqued, so I logged out, created another n00b -- this time a gnome. I wanted to see if maybe the gnome books mentioned tinkering. Turns out they don't. But when you ask "What trades?" and "What second book?" respectively, you get the identical text to what Guntrik the Ogre Warrior Guildmaster said in response to the same questions. Thus explaining his sudden increase in intelligence: he was channeling a gnome (probably the one he had for lunch).

No conclusions here or deep, philosophical noodling. Just thought it was interesting enough to warrant comment.

A surprising amount of linguistic ability for an Ogre
That had me chuckling out loud at my desk.

Evidently, tradeskills make one more eloquent. Not to be confused with smarter.

Considering everything that was added with the latest patch, I’m not surprised some shortcuts were taken. It would be nice, however, if the powers that be later went back and made the dialog unique for each race. I’d love to hear an ogre’s take on the culinary arts. Though I did notice that Edible Goo was the very first baking recipe listed. So perhaps it was written from an ogre’s point of view after all.

Slightly off the topic, but I had a friend who created a level 1 ogre warrior the day the servers went live. He couldn't resist temptation, and was bashed in the face by the trainer for 50 points damage and died....

His roommate says he was howling with laughter for the next 20 minutes or so (after killing off poor Swampface the ogre 3 more times with the same technique).
