For example you can use grubs and water to get a good start in brewing or bat wings and fish to get a good start in baking.

I agree with the Brewing, but as for the Baking.....unless you get the fish by fishing and kill the bats yourself, you'd be wasting money. Just buy a Filleting Knife and use it (in an oven or spit) on any Bear, Lion or Wolf Meat you come across (stick Mammoth Meat in the bank for after you trivial this, or sell it to people who can already use it, instead of wasting it by using a Filleting Knife on it). Stick any successfully made fillets in the bank, because you'll need them for HMPs.
