While this may get moved to baking (due to the specific examples) or Primal Scream (due solely to vented frustration).... Here goes:
I will try to not use the word "equal" here, but if I somehow slip up, please replace equal with one of the following: consistent, fair, average.
I have spent several years (as well as numerous others) playing EQ. While I have been a member of a raiding guild, an Alliance of guilds with a focus on raiding, a small family guild, and currently, the remains of a tradeskill guild, I still play EQ because it is a diverse experience game in which I can choose to tradeskill, merchant (barter in bazaar), hunt in a small group, or go after the "big game" in a raid. I have the OPPORTUNITY to choose what I want to do in the game.
I have completed the series of tradeskill trophies on several characters: 55 shaman, (tradeskills range from 65 to 190, all trophies possible), 69 ranger (tradeskill range from 150 to 230, 4 trophies, working on the rest), 60 enchanter (tradeskill range from 200 to 254, 5 trophies, working on the rest).
I have found a stark disparity in the difficulty of the various trophies. Specifically the Baking trophy. The requirement for NEST DRAKE MEAT is a bit ridiculous.
I have had a buyer up in the bazaar for 3 weeks offering as high as 1k plat for NEST DRAKE MEAT. I have spent 3 weeks in a combination of regular and instanced versions of Lavaspinners, suffered numerous deaths to gating mobs that you can't stun (at least not with a 60 cleric, 60 ranger and 60 enchanter), and have not seen a single meat drop.
I have even used my 70 ranger, cleric, druid combo to clean house in regular lavaspinners for three nights (that's 3 hours a night).
I haven't camped this much for ONE item since my ranger was in the mid 40s and I was looking for a FBSS in Lower Guk.
From my searches on EQ Traders, it seems the NEST DRAKE MEAT is used in 88 recipes. Should the developers have spent that much time to develop 88 recipes of stat foods, plus the "tuning" of the trophy quest, plus the beta test time, loot drop tuning time, etc... for a drop that appears to be on the same table as the Manastone?
I realize that some of the "harder" instanced zones may have a higher drop rate, but, seriously, it should have dropped by now. My ranger has TWO STACKS of drake intestines and not a single meat.
If the developers are so intent on tying the tradeskill items to the "appropriate" character level, then why are the tradeskills not limited to X skill points per exp level as 1HS, meditate, abjuration, etc.?
I guess that I'm just really frustrated that I try to obtain the quest items I need with the character that I'm going to use them.
Being level 80 with a gazillion AAs, GLAs, RLAs, and all the 'best' raid gear in the game it not THE ultimate part of the game. It may be YOUR ultimate part, but it is not MY ultimate part.
Someone really needs to look at the drop rate in the "lower" level zones.
Tonight, I think I will actually count the various drakes I kill and keep track of their loot for a better sample of the frustration, but that may be more 'work' than I'm willing to do for a game.
