  • What would you buy instead of make yourself?

    Hey all,

I have always been the one trying to supply the tradeskillers with what they need to reach their goals, I have always found I enjoyed this type of involvement than lots of combines to get to the highest levels. That said, I am curious what people would much rather buy than make themselves, below are the things that move quickly for me:

    1) Mistletoe Temper at 8pp/ea
    2) Blessed Dust of Tunare at 45pp/ea
    3) Othmir Fur at 500pp/ea
    4) Arctic Wyvren fur 125pp/ea

Anything else that you all as a group would find useful, I am on the Nameless, but I imagine it would transalate to all servers.

    Thank you for your thoguhts,

    Sceambringer

Othmir fur at 500pp/ea? Dang, I need to get to seal clubbin'...

To be honest, I got into the whole Tradeskilling thing with the full intention and realization that there's gonna be a lot of stuff to make. I kinda enjoy it, actually. So with SoM and Celestial Distiller on vendors in PoK, there's not even a need to get Celestial Essence in the bazaar. So I, personally, don't purchase subcombine items. Others do, however, and one can make a lucrative profit off of the lazy.

Really, my main interest is in foraged rather than farmed goods. I don't have a decent dr00d/ranger twink yet, and it takes for bloody ever to get any sort of volume on foraged stuff.

In particular, Air-Infused Water (Brewing and Pottery), Steaming Water (Brewing), Chunk of Ice (Yep, more Brewing), Taelosian Tea Leaves (Not the Mountain variaty, those drop and I can get sufficent quantity when me and my friends go Goat-Hunting several times a week), and (very rarely) I'll buy eggs in the Bazaar, provided no one has decided to become a scalper and jack up the prices to obscene levels.

Celestial essence defiantly since it's used in lots of recipies and not everyone's contended to sit back and click 200 times to make enough for one small run. I think MCS needs a total of 9 CE per sickle combine.

Acid wash might be something to look in as well. Not sure of the demand but they are used in some recipies as well as aid grimmel quest.

various mana vials would help since not everyone has a pocket chanty. Clear and coudy about 15-20 each, viscous mana about 8-10 and purified around 550 each. Those are used in lots of recipies. I think there is one more mana vial I missed?

On Maelin someone is trying to sell mistletoe temper for 50p each. I'm tempted to make 500 and sell them for at cost or just above cost to inform would be buyers they are not that expensive in the first place.

        Wow...

50pp for Mistletoe Temper, if people actually buy that you could finance your own tradeskilling by making lots and selling then for half that.

I sell mine for 8pp each, which I think is a fair price for the amount of clicks is saves people in the long run...but 50pp, that like 48pp profit each.

Maybe I will need to make a brew on Maelin to offer competition =)

Mana vials are a steady money maker I bet. I have several chantie friends who are more then willing to help, but I am still reluctant to have them run me off batches of 300 if I could pay 25% more then cost to someone selling them in the bazaar. I usually save their goodwill for after I have cleaned the bazaar out hehe.

Celestial essence was a big one for me. I had 100's of mistletoe cutting sickles. I counted up the subcombines to make 20 MCS, and it was 320 subcombines! The CEs were 140 of that 320, so anytime I could buy them it was a huge decrease in clicking for me.

Leather Padding is something I still buy today, but not nearly as much as I used too. I've been busy doing spell reserach, instead of smithing, these days.

Selling things like Imbued Emeralds is good too.

                buying vs making

I'm with Quichon: I prefer to make the stuff myself. (As I just posted in another thread, though, I'm happy to let others buy my intermediate results, and I'll just go back and make more.) But sure, there's always a price at which I'll buy instead. E.g., Celestial Essence. Needed by the truckload, costs under 2pp to make. I've been known to pay up to 2.5pp each for it, and could be tempted at 3pp if I needed a lot, but at the usual price of 4-5pp I can't see buying it.

Farmed ingredients are harder because the time involved varies a lot more. Even so, I've found that I usually do better by using the bazaar sellers as a benchmark and then having my buyer offer quite a bit less. When I was doing Arctic Wyvern for tailoring, I offered 80pp and found plenty of folks who'd sell to me at that price. (I admit my current offer of 100pp for Othmir Fur has collected only fifty or so in three months, but I'm still not willing to pay 500! Alas, I'm also unwilling to ruin my faction with the critters, so I guess I'll farm holgresh fur instead.)

I often buy spell research solutions if they're not too expensive, just because they're so tedious to make.

But again, what do other people think is "too expensive"? It's like me with the Celestial Essence: I'm willing to pay 2 or maybe 3 to avoid the tedium, but paying more than double the cost is "too much" for me, at least on the small stuff. But if someone's offering it at close to what it would cost me for the ingredients? Sure, I'll take it.

That's why I'm a bit puzzled why I can't seem to sell the parchment solutions. The vellum one costs about 115pp plus whatever you spend on saltpeter and sulfur; I figure they cost me 130pp, and as you say they're a pain to make, so I tried offering them at 200 and got no takers. Had to drop them to 150 to get them to move at all. My guess is that everyone who can use them already has their own lifetime supply from using the solutions as a skillup path. (That's why I've got mine, after all!)

personally im a cheapo when it comes to buying tradeskill items.. my mind auto adds up what i can do as far as combines go and then i see the buying of the ingredients as a waste of combines if i can get the item quickly..

now.. Drachnid Silk? i hate drachnids and the drop rate is horrible..
i bought 1250 or so sillk earlier at 4 plat each.. im broke now but.. hey, im set for a few days on silk (100 combine ish stretches with Infusion running..)
oh and.. hate for the skillup thing.. 100 combines .. 9 skillups... 2.5k that im not getting anything back out of

Heady Kiola, I know its just a run to EFPort, but all that clicking makes me crazy. I would pay between 5-10pp just to not click.

                        /e wants multiple combines please

Oh god, my wrist hurts just thinking of heady Kiolas. I would have bought them if I had thought to look in the bazaar.

If you are A) a gnome and B) insane enough to do the crafting chain of quests from corathus and C) really masochistic you can sell AAAA's. Those are enough of a pain that GM tinkers will buy them from you if you price them low enough. Bit on the spendy side to make even if you farm though.

Mana vials and Clay are winners, albeit slow.

I happily buy CEs for 5p or less in the bazaar (I sometimes pay more if I only need a few, but if the only vendor is asking 10p and I need a run I suck it up and make my own) it is nicer now with the multi combine, but I did enough Sickles smithing from 220-300 that I hope to never see another Scent of Marr...

I also do buy (lately) parchment solutions in the bazaar. I'm overpaying for them but from 280-293 now and for the next 7 points I have no problem paying 250-300 for Fine vellum and 500-600 for Runic. I would probably save some cash if I did it on my own, but I have enough of a bankroll that the saved time and clicking is worth it to me.... the timesink of combines for the inks and quills is enough of a PITA to me that I'm willing to pay a premium to not have to deal with yet another step.

I used to buy a few other combined items (silk thread, silk swatches, etc) when I was working up skills but anymore I wait for a cheap trader to have some of the basic components in stock.
