  • Buyer/Barter mode

I'd like to know how you define your prices on buyer/barter ?
I usually propose half the price I see in the /bazaar mode if there are no other buyers, and increase it when there is competition.
I'd like to hear other "strategies" approches to that.

    A couple of stratagies:
    1. half the price of the baz usally is pretty darn good
    2. 10-20% plus the price a vendor will buy it
    3. What I feel is a reasonable price if 1 or 2 don't agree with me(ie. buy too slow or too fast)
    4. Random cheap price (close to what vendor will buy for)on expensive tradeskill item that I may need in the future (With this one you are counting on getting lucky. Buying something that does sell at much higher prices for cheap.)

One quote from another person on this board I keep in mind all the time...

"The price you see in the bazaar is the price things are NOT selling for."

I have used all of those strats. Hopefully I am just dumb like that and there is a way but what gets me is there isn't a way to see what everyone is buying at once. You either click on everything in your inventory and search or browse each buyer. Granted there usually aren't more then 2 handfulls of buyers up but still takes more time then I would like to spend.

Euridice - when you mention checking for competition do you normally have at least 1 of each item you are looking to buy and then search for that? Looking for ideas as this really could be a powerful tool but I just don't use it much.

Well, I supose something I've noticed is that if you are buying hides, lets say... just do a search for hides and you'll see every hide type that someone is buying.....

Usually, tradeskillers being what they are, I do a search on the three or four important things for me and can tell if someone else is likely to be buying what I'm looking for.... for example, if I'm skilling in tailoring and notice that everyone is buying hides and silks... likely someone is also buying ribbon material too.

if you do a search of buy lines without putting anything in the description box, it will show everything that people are buying. atleast if i remember right. i do know that you can search for what everybody is buying at once. just not exactly sure on how to do it at the moment.

You can indeed search for everything that everyone is buying, but the barter interface will limit your results to 200 items. So if you have a lot of buyers on your server, you may end up missing some results. Still, it should be enough to give you an idea of what to look for, and you can always run narrower searches to get fewer but more complete results.

Typically, I will price match the highest reasonable price already in /buyer. No point in out-bidding people as that just leads to an upward spiral of prices. By reasonable I mean 50-80% of the normal /trader prices...

If I want something bad enough to use /barter, I want it NOW, so I pick a price that is absurdly high so that it will make people want to go out of their way to get it if they don't have it and sell it to me. So far though, I have only done it twice, once for Air Arachnid Silk so I could finish Aid Grimel and the other time for a DoN GM sleeves augment a long time ago.

I offer what I want to pay for something

But really. I don't often base my prices on bazaar prices. Sometimes I pay much much lower, sometimes I pay around the same, and sometimes I pay over bazaar prices. Depends on how much I want the item, how much I think it is worth myself, and how much it would annoy me to run around collecting it.
For example, when it is an item that sells for super cheap but I can't be bothered to keep going to get them, I offer above the bazaar price hoping that some enterprising individual will notice and buy and sell for me making some pp as the middleman.
Similarly, the only prices I actually even check against other buyers are the ones for the items I want most, the majority of items on my buyer I set at the price I want to buy it at, and rely on most people not keeping their buyer up all the time, allowing for times of the day where I might be the only one with that item up.

Experimenting using items instead of pp?

I've always just used pp before last night, but now trying to figure out if there is a way to purchase a set quantity of items (say 500 Radiant Crystals) in exchange for a SINGLE item I think is worth the 500 RC's as a total.

Luckily I tested this myself or I would of been VERY upset later, as I used a second account and purchased the item for only ONE RC's. Whoops - that didn't work but luckily it was ME buying!

Is there a way to do this, or is the item exchange limited to mostly a one to one exchange (or multiple items you will give in exchange for one item being purchased)?

What /boggles me is the folks who offer 260pp or less for Blue Diamonds....

...NPC's will buy BDs for ~232pp...and frequently I am getting BDs by vendormining them, so I am paying ~262pp....

..Now, my JC is 300 so I am more willing to part with them now than keep them for personal use...BUT....offer more than 260pp guys, or I'm keeping 'em!

But they aren't trying to buy the BD's from you, they are trying to buy them from all the people who sell them to npc's for 232.

Is there a way to do this, or is the item exchange limited to mostly a one to one exchange (or multiple items you will give in exchange for one item being purchased)?
Unfortunately you can't, this is probably the biggest shortcoming of barter mode.
