As someone who skilled up on mostly picnics for high-level baking, I am going to come to their defense. I can't forage, but I was able to buy or have given to me several stacks of fruit. I farmed a couple stacks of Brownie parts from Steamfont both from killing Brownies and vendor mining. Vegetables are as common in the Bazaar as dead Rangers in a raid, so there's no trouble there. Eggs for dough were taken from Lavastorm. Now, on to the goods that must be bought from a vendor...
Shadowhaven is a Baker's dream. Everything besides the aforementioned items can be found there. With a bit of practice, a person can do 100 full MTP combines from in 45 minutes or less, including the time it takes to buy and prepare all the ingredients. As far as space, all that is needed is 4 empty (10-slot) bags or toolboxes and a few slots to place the finished product. I generally grab my WIS suit and stored items from the bank by Nexus, run to the short section for the jumjum, lettuce, and bread, and set off for the east. On the way are the alchemy and rennet vendors, the brewing and baking merchant, the brew barrel, and the smithing vendor, forge, and loom.
Once I make my baskets and beer, I then reverse course and head back to the oven next to the baking merchant and get to work on the remaining subcombines. It helps to always buy one or two extra of each ingredient to avoid going back.
In short, the "annoyance" factor of picnics isn't as bad as some claim. A couple stacks of fruit, eggs, and Brownie parts will go a long way, and everything else can be found in Shadowhaven besides vegetables.
To be fair, I never made Holy Cakes. This was because there was no need to do so.

Personally, I like to do holy cake. I find it to be much more fun than picnics, mostly because I dislike lots of subcombines.
Here's what I do:
I gather up enough ingredients to make about 60-80 celestial essence and grab my collapsible mortar and pestle.
I head to Lesser Faydark and camp the brownie village. The little chocolate people go down pretty quick and I can usually get 4-5 parts per cycle. I also kill the spiderlings since they tend to drop decent amounts of silk.
Then I sit and med, and make celestial essences. I also check track for any named brownies, then hunt them down.
The whole time I'm foraging too. I keep any sylvan berries for ribbon dye and sell the morning dew in the bazaar.
I usually only stay until I get one stack of parts, then make the pies and sell the results in the bazaar or give to guildies. It works pretty well for me.
My trick to killing the brownies in steamfont is to use charm, tell the pet to "/pet attack a mountain" when you get near the spot where track is running you around in circles. It will either attack a mountain lion or a mountain brownie. And it'll pull the brownies out of the hillsides.
