    The Aquagoblin Story
Long long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Aquagoblins could only be found in Dagnor's Cauldron. When killed, those aquagoblins used to raise all the guard factions in Faydwer. Along comes a patch, and some aquagoblins are added to the shoreline of Butcherblock Mountains: sneaky invading aquagoblins disturbing the pleasant shorelines of Butcherblock (and getting in the way of druids kiting dorfs). These new goblins raise the faction of all the guards in Faydwer, and drop loot that sells to merchants for ~4pp each. The old aquagoblins in Dagnor's Cauldron no longer raise guards in Faydwer, just lower "aquagoblin" faction. Phooey on that, you can no longer raise the guard factions by killing level 15-28 goblins. Only the bodies of these newbie aquagoblins will appease the bloodthirsty natures of the EmeraldWarriors, the GemChoppers and the StormGuard.

Wow, level 10 mobs that drop 4pp items about 1 in 3 times? and there are 2 camps of them and they are on 6 minute timers? Talk about major mudflation. A group of teens could rake in several hundred plat per hour. As a level 56 shaman (trying to repair the guard factions that were trashed hunting explorers in the lake of ill manners), I could easily kill all the mobs faster than they could respawn. So could many classes, who would come in, push out the lowbies camping there for exp and cause too much grief. I would not push others out, only coming to the camps when there were no one else camping there.

Along came a patch, and the items that used to sell to vendors for about 4pp each (some stacked also) now sell for a couple of silver. I had great fun killing everything there, and leaving the corpses for anyone who wanted....
"Why aren't you looting the goblins?" asks some stranger.
"I am just killing them for faction," I reply.
"Can I loot the stuff please?" says that someone who did not know they were nerfed.
"Sure, I don't want it. And let's group so you don't have to wait for the 2 minutes for the corpse to unlock" I reply.
"Oh wow, you are the greatest, thank you" comes the reply.
After about 20 minutes of looting everything, they run off to the merchant. I start laughing in real life, because I know what is coming.
"Would you like a charisma buff, so you can get better prices at the merchant?" I ask them. Many times I received no reply, just a message that my group has been disbanded. Within a couple of minutes, I hear /shouts of cursing and screaming when they discover that the items sell to merchants for about 1/20th of what they did the previous week, when everyone and their uncle fought over the camps.

      Another Story...

Back in the begining, when EQ was a new thing, there was a Lost Temple of Cazic-Thule.

Yes, it was in the same place as the zone now called "The Accursed Temple of Cazic-Thule." This zone was one of the places aimed at levels 25-40 and had what, at the time, was arguably the best armor drop in the game... Rubicite.

This shiny red plate armor was wearable by a large number of classes, and only dropped in this one zone. In today's EQ, the pieces are mostly not even worth twinking, but back then, well they were amazing. And the best piece? The breastplate, effect: Rubicite Aura - HP Regen!

This zone was so camped and so crowded that in 1999 when I went there for the first time (on what was then one of the highest end machines available) I got a frame-rate of about 2 per second. Rubicite armor was the cause of more bickering, training, camp-stealing, flaming, and out-right evil than could possibly be imagined. VI (before Sony put their name on the box) decided these drops were too much of a Customer Service nightmare, and too much of a problem in general. So, the stuff stopped dropping.

But -- Similar armors (and I would argue , in most cases better) were added. Darkforge, Totemic, Crafted and others were added. One set for each class that previously could wear Rubicite. These were done as quests, spreading people out to other zones. (Remember kiddies, there were no Iksar, no Vah Shir, and no place to go that wasn't on Antonica, Odus or Faywer). A vast improvement to remove one of the most contested and over-camped items in the game.

Now, what does this have to do with the Aquagoblins in Butcherblock? Just this; The aquagoblins no longer provide the path to riches, but what was added in the world that improved the game?

Would help if they updated the level 30 quest armors (ok so a level 10 can do them now) to better fit with the stats of the newb quest stuff. And of course, fix the Velious stuff so its useful again (not that its all bad, just a good bit of it), And thanks for info on AG thing. Now I know why tehy were always perma'ed

Ah, to make everything in EQ perfect.

Let's start by organizing and implimenting world peace.. it might actually be easier.

Video games have one common thread: People will do what gives the most reward for the effort.
Sure there are those that play games on the hard settings, go the long way, do quests just for the chalange. But the vast majority of people will actively seek out the 'best' way of doing things and then abuse it till it's battered, beaten, and bruised (Take solstice robes, for example).
If it means cheating, lying, and general poorsportsmanship, then by all means they will do it enmass!

In order for EQ to be interesting there is a varying degree of chalange/reward. With this comes everything with the greatest ratio will get massily used.. and if any part of it is dropable or MQable it will get farmed endlessly.

Perhaps someday there will be a MMORPG that fixes these problems... EQ1 is too old and set in it's ways to change.
