  • Another reason not to group

Last night I was in Paludal Caverns killing some Sensate reishis and the occasion Recondites. A guy yell that they are looking for more people for B1. I run over there, and without saying a word, get an invite. I'm thinking cool, faster exp, and working with other peeps.
Well, we got a full group, I was stuck healing, snareing and DSing. Things were going well, until I noticed the leader health was going down fast. I tried to heal him and got the message "Your target is out of range". Si I start telling him in group chat that I can't heal him, as he is out of range, where is he at. No response.
A couple minutes later, 20% mana left, and he comes running to the group from the bridge, actually swimming. I heal him, and we go about our business killing the recondites.
About 10 min later, we get some Phlarg fiends added to the group of recondites we were killing. Nice, someone didn't yeall train, I told the group. We killed them off easily, but I needed to med for a while.
About a half hour later, the leader guy is gone again, and his health was dropping. I tried to heal and he was out of range. I then told the group I was leaving as the leader kept running off to solo and getting the group bonus, but he was too far away for us to get exp, so he was getting all of the exp plus bonus.
The only time he ever said anything to the group was when he was asked what he was doing over there and his reply was "Better exp over here".
    Well, DUH!!!
So, the rest of the group disbanded too, we reformed, but I had to leave anyway because it was way past my bedtime, and I had to get up early to go to work.

Paludal Caverns was designed to attract more than it's share of idiots. The zone experience modifier is very high there, and there are lots of mobs to kill. You could go from 5 to 25 there in just a few days. Therefore you get a lot of people who know very little about the classes they play, as well as people who are single-minded about getting experience as fast as they can without respect for anyone else.

You will find these behaviors lessen as you increase in level. You will develop your own @$#%@ list of folks not to group with too. However, grouping is a great way to enjoy the social aspects of this MMORPG.

Don't let the idiots get you down.

The group exp bonus also encourages "network grouping" which is a term used for folks who are are in a zone, grouped, but really out of range of each other and in actuality soloing. They get the bonus for being grouped, which ends up being much more than soloing (80% if there are 5 or 6 in the group). Expect the nerf bat to hit that one upside the head.

Aye. Once again, someone finds something, shares it with all of theirs friends, it spreads all over the net, and will probably be nerfed next patch. :-/

You would prefer that those people only tell you and then keep it quiet so that you can get an unfair advantage?

                  Uhm... can you say "exploit"? I can't believe there are people who actually think this is supposed to work like that. -_-;

Doesn't matter to a lot of people whether or not its "supposed" to work like that. All that matters is that it does.

IIRC, Starfleet Command III had a bug that came into play on the developer's on-line servers. It was possible to quit from the game when your starship was nearly dead and avoid losing your ship as a result. I remember reading one argument about it on the forums where some players attacked it because it wasn't realistic, while others defended it because, well, it was possible, and therefore a legitimate tactic in their eyes (or so they claimed).

I guess, looking at it for more then the 3 seconds I originally gave it, this probably would be ruled an exploit.

                      *shrug*

And no, I wouldnt prefer that people "Tell me and then keep it quiet". I hadn't heard about this, and didnt say that I should have.

I simply have the firm belief that whenever someone finds something worth knowing in the game, they tell 20 of their friends, who tell 20 of their friends, and Sony is quick to decide that it needs to be "fixed".

Not talking about this particular situation. But things like Aqua Goblins, or any one of a hundred things that weren't "Exploits", but once sony noticed that six billion people were doing it, and profitting more then the Devs thought proper, they got changed.

I guess the reason I didnt stop to think if this was an exploit was because of my ... views... on the recent trend towards enforced grouping, but I really dont want to turn the thread into that discussion again.

Actually, I'm thinking that they nerfed the AGs more due to the constant bickering, KSing and whining that was associated with them then due to any real concern with folks making too much plat from the drops - it was getting to a point a few weeks before the nerf that you couldn't go onto the Sony boards without having a new thread every day featuring folks bitching about someone KSing thier goblins, etc - I was very glad to finally see that ended.

                          Re: Aqua Goblins

I've played this game for too long. When I saw reference to an Aqua Goblin issue, I thought it was talking about hunting the pets of the aqua goblin shamans in Oasis way back when.

Agreed, it got out of hand. But this is what I mean when I say that people can't keep a good thing to themselves. If people had kept this to themselves and a few close friends, instead of posting it on every message board and web page in the existance, then maybe it would be a viable source of plat still.

Maybe this makes me a bad person, but I have noticed that encouraging everyone on the planet to take advantage of a good thing normally results in the demise of that good thing. In real life, or in everquest.
